Download or read book Shadow Elite written by Janine R. Wedel and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It can feel like we're swimming in a sea of corruption. It's unclear who exactly is in charge and what role they play. The same influential people seem to reappear time after time in different professional guises, pressing their own agendas in one venue after another. According to award-winning public policy scholar and anthropologist Janine Wedel, these are the powerful ''shadow elite,'' the main players in a vexing new system of power and influence. In this groundbreaking book, Wedel charts how this shadow elite, loyal only to their own, challenge both governments' rules of accountability and business codes of competition to accomplish their own goals. From the Harvard economists who helped privatize post-Soviet Russia and the neoconservatives who have helped privatize American foreign policy (culminating with the debacle that is Iraq) to the many private players who daily make public decisions without public input, these manipulators both grace the front pages and operate behind the scenes. Wherever they maneuver, they flout once-sacrosanct boundaries between state and private. Profoundly original, Shadow Elite gives us the tools we need to recognize these powerful yet elusive players and comprehend the new system. Nothing less than our ability for self-government and our freedom are at stake.

Download or read book Betrayal written by Charles Jacobs and published by Wicked Son. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Betrayal loudly rings the alarm for a somnolent American Jewry. Read it and wake others.” —Daniel Pipes, President of the Middle East Forum “If you think it’s time for the American Jewish community, its organizations, and its leadership, to have an honest, challenging, vigorous debate about where we are going—and what mistakes we have made—then read this important, illuminating, sometimes depressing, but ultimately inspiring, book.” —Gil Troy, Distinguished Scholar of North American History at McGill University, and editor of the three-volume set Theodor Herzl: Zionist Writings This book—perhaps the first devoted to this topic—documents the devastating failure of the Jewish establishment, including its leaders and major donors, to defend and protect American Jews as anti-Semitism surges across the country. It is a collection of essays by writers who care about the welfare of the Jewish community. Some of the essayists are prominent, some are local activists engaged in ongoing battles to defend the community. Some essays offer analyses, others give disturbing, in-depth accounts of the failures themselves. All of them rebuke the Jewish leaders and institutions who have abandoned their responsibilities. While Jewish leaders cling to a utopian belief system which comports with their naïve political ideology, the ugly reality their mindset ignores only worsens. Betrayed by their leaders, the essayists argue, American Jews require new, strong leadership. The book itself is an expanded version of a collection published in the Spring 2022 issue of White Rose Magazine, a publication which promotes classical liberalism in the face of political extremism and is named in honor of the anti-Nazi White Rose resistance movement. Book Synopsis Warrior's Dishonour by : George Kassimeris
Download or read book Warrior's Dishonour written by George Kassimeris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristic act of men at war is not killing. It is killing by committing shocking and unspeakable atrocities, when circumstances permit. What drives ordinary people into hatred, genocide, inhumanity and evil? What turns friends and neighbours against each other with such savagery? Where does such barbarity come from? This collection examines the anarchy, cruelty and overwhelming confusion of modern warfare. In particular it analyzes: ¢ what happens when morality vanishes from the battlefield and why torture is endemic in modern warfare; ¢ how human rights, in times of war, lose meaning as a set of principles; ¢ whether official propaganda and enemy demonization make barbaric behaviour easier; ¢ how we can develop cultures opposed to torture that damage the legitimacy of our societies. Through a wealth of case studies that have been carefully selected in terms of their themes, approaches and methodologies, this comprehensive volume provokes discussion and enhances understanding from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.
Book Synopsis Animals in the Fiction of Cormac McCarthy by : Wallis R. Sanborn, III
Download or read book Animals in the Fiction of Cormac McCarthy written by Wallis R. Sanborn, III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-03-27 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of Cormac McCarthy have been critically studied as literature of the South and of the Border Southwest. Largely ignored is the omnipresence and presentation of animals in McCarthy's works. Yet the abundant representations of animals depict a part of the ceaseless battle for survival that is inherent in many of his writings. McCarthy's animals exist within the framework of a fictional natural world driven by biological determinism: Wild animals prey upon feral and domestic animals, horses exist as warriors, and the hunt is a ballet between man and hunting hound. Proximity to humans results in mistreatment and death, while distance results in survival and fitness. McCarthy also utilizes animals as harbingers of specific events; for example, hogs are so frequently a precursor of human death that McCarthy's narrators and characters wonder whether hogs are joined to the devil for evil purposes. The first chapter here examines animal presentations in The Stonemason, The Gardener's Son and two short stories, "Bounty" and "The Dark Waters." The following nine chapters focus on one text, one type of animal--feline, swine, bovine, bird and bat, canine, equine, lupine, and hound--and one particular thesis. Each chapter also briefly examines the specific animal as it exists in other McCarthy works.
