Book excerpt: "The book presents research studies where models and theories of nursing from the perspective of sexuality were used. Theory is essential to explain and understand nursing practices. Likewise, it favours planning, predicting and evaluating the outcomes of care. Therefore, the theoretical approach is a useful tool for reasoning, critical thinking and, in addition, it helps nurses to be able to use and manage all the information about the patient and to manage the practice of care in an orderly and effective way. The use of conceptual models of nursing in care ensures that all nurses share a common language and similar conceptions regarding the nursing, person, health, environment and care paradigms that characterize the professional role. Here, a reflection is posed about what still, and even though it is a very important topic, maintains the dichotomy between nursing practice and nursing theory. The book is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students in the area of health, as well as at health professionals interested in using such models or theories related to human sexuality in different age groups"--

Book excerpt: A critical need exists to provide adolescents with sexual health education as demonstrated by our nation's position in having the highest adolescent pregnancy rates among all the developed nations. The critical need is further pronounced by California's changing demographic profile of young Latinos who are projected to be the majority in 2042 and continue to demonstrate higher pregnancy and birth rates than other racial and ethnic groups. Currently, there is limited evidence to confirm if California's students are receiving sexual and reproductive health as required by law, nor is there evidence to link school nurses as teachers or consultants in sexuality education (SE). The purpose of this study is to describe the degree of knowledge, attitude, and subjective norm with intent to participate in SE. Three articles evolved from the dissertation: 1) a historical research article about the history and politics of adolescent sexual education policy and collaborative opportunities for bi-national nurses, 2) a methods article on the process of utilizing the content validity index on a pre-existing, theoretically-based instrument, and 3) the analysis of the research findings that resulted from a survey with California school nurses utilizing the adapted and recently validated questionnaire that describes the variables that lead to intention and participation in SE. This research is the first of its kind to describe the perspectives of school nurses as educators of sexual health content in the U.S. This study takes a step towards addressing gaps in research about school nurses and their contribution in sexual health education. This study will be instrumental in defining the role of the school nurse as sexual health educator and provides foundational data to advance school nurse research, translate knowledge into evidence based practice, and supports the need to incorporate sexuality education into nursing's core curriculum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a rich array of source materials including previously unseen, fascinating (and often quite moving) oral histories, archival and news media sources, 'Curing queers' examines the plight of men who were institutionalised in British mental hospitals to receive ‘treatment’ for homosexuality and transvestism, and the perceptions and actions of the men and women who nursed them. It examines why the majority of the nurses followed orders in administering the treatment – in spite of the zero success-rate in ‘straightening out’ queer men – but also why a small number surreptitiously defied their superiors by engaging in fascinating subversive behaviours. 'Curing queers' makes a significant and substantial contribution to the history of nursing and the history of sexuality, bringing together two sub-disciplines that combine only infrequently. It will be of interest to general readers as well as scholars and students in nursing, history, gender studies, and health care ethics and law.
