Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, research, activity, and funding has been devoted to improving the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine. In recent years the diversity of those participating in these fields, particularly the participation of women, has improved and there are significantly more women entering careers and studying science, engineering, and medicine than ever before. However, as women increasingly enter these fields they face biases and barriers and it is not surprising that sexual harassment is one of these barriers. Over thirty years the incidence of sexual harassment in different industries has held steady, yet now more women are in the workforce and in academia, and in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine (as students and faculty) and so more women are experiencing sexual harassment as they work and learn. Over the last several years, revelations of the sexual harassment experienced by women in the workplace and in academic settings have raised urgent questions about the specific impact of this discriminatory behavior on women and the extent to which it is limiting their careers. Sexual Harassment of Women explores the influence of sexual harassment in academia on the career advancement of women in the scientific, technical, and medical workforce. This report reviews the research on the extent to which women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine are victimized by sexual harassment and examines the existing information on the extent to which sexual harassment in academia negatively impacts the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women pursuing scientific, engineering, technical, and medical careers. It also identifies and analyzes the policies, strategies and practices that have been the most successful in preventing and addressing sexual harassment in these settings.

Book excerpt: This book represents the first comprehensive resource manual for understanding and preventing sexual harassment in the academic community and in the workplace. Studies indicate that sexual harassment is at epidemic proportions in the academy and in the workplace: from 30%–70% of women in U.S. colleges and universities experience some form of sexual harassment (including sexual assaults) each year; a University of Massachusetts study reports 13% of undergraduate women were raped by acquaintances; and 50% of women in the workplace report serious sexual harassment from supervisors and fellow employees. This manual provides the results of research and of practical, effective experience in reducing the occurrence of sexual harassment, investigating complaints, and providing counseling and remedies for the victims. In addition, the authors have compiled bibliographies, audio-visual material, and pedagogical techniques for dealing with sexual harassment in the academy and in the workplace, as well as information and workshop techniques to facilitate training programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bullying in schools is often discussed, but sexual harassment in schools, and how it differs from bullying is often overlooked. In fact, though, sexual harassment (committed both by fellow students and school personnel) is more common and yet more easily and quickly dismissed by those involved, though its consequences for the victim can be profound. This book provides parents, teachers, school officials, and others with a framework comparing and contrasting sexual harassment and bullying as they relate to the behavior, laws, and impact on children. The author describes the responsibility of the school district and how parents and other adults can navigate the schools' policies, barriers, and responsibilities. She argues that children should not be subjected to bullying OR sexual harassment, that it is the school's responsibility to make the harassment or bullying stop, and that parents and other caring adults often need to be involved and advocate for the child, even against resistance from those in the school system. Throughout the book the author uses examples of actual cases that have made it to the courts and have been precedent setting and cases in which she has been involved as an expert witness or as a consultant. Resources for readers are also provided at the end of the book.

This work reflects on a variety of aspects of sexual harassment, its litigation and law, as well as how the issues they demonstrate often have as much to do with linguistics or jurisprudence as with negative action, though there is a great deal of evidence of the latter. The book provides a clear-eyed and detailed assessment of the 'harassment' controversies now plaguing America's universities and colleges.

Book excerpt: Sexual harassment has long been an unfortunate part of the climate in middle and high schools in the United States. Often considered a form of bullying, sexual harassment by definition involves sex and gender and therefore warrants separate attention. This report provides fresh evidence about students' experiences, including being harassed, harassing someone else, or witnessing harassment. The students share their reactions to their experiences, and also provide ideas for how schools can respond to and prevent sexual harassment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetzel and Brown examine the extent to which student-to-student sexual harassment exists in secondary schools today. They provide evidence that student sexual harassment is not only currently widespread, it is also unconsciously and consciously condoned by school authorities who are charged with providing a safe and effective educational environment. After reviewing the state of sexual harassment in American high schools, the authors provide the best practices for increasing awareness of what behaviors constitute sexual harassment as well as alert readers to the negative impact on both boys and girls, where sexual harassment is most likely to take place, and ways students can become more socially adept. A template for developing a school district policy is presented as are strategies for educating and dissemination. Practical and specific strategies for parents, teachers, and students are presented in detail.

This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on her work as a private consultant, Michele A. Paludi recognized the need for an updated version of her book Ivory Power: Sexual Harassment on Campus. This need for a second edition was not only facilitated by updated case law, but also by the considerable work published since the first edition concerning training of personnel at colleges and universities and setting up policy statements and effective grievance procedures. Additional attention is devoted to 'consensual relationships' between faculty and students, a topic only touched upon lightly a few years ago. The events of the last few years at Antioch College and the University of Virginia that have stimulated discussion on peer sexual harassment also led to the need for a second edition of Ivory Power. For this edition Dr. Paludi invited the contributors ofIvory Power to update their chapters, focusing on new research, case law, and theory, and new contributors offer their perspectives on sexual harassment in the academic environment. New forewords have been added, most notable are those written by clergy--one a Methodist, one a Roman Catholic--who are dealing with victims of sexual harassment in their parish.
