Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of identifying a history of sexual abuse is now well recognized by doctors who know that the problem may lie behind a presentation of physical illness, relationship problems, unhappiness or sexual and psychological difficult ies. It is, however, impossible to say accurately how often sexual abuse is a factor, because in so many cases it is not acknowledged consciously, or is hidden away where it is inaccessible without skilled help. The majority of the books on sexual abuse have been written from particular standpoints. There are now many such books for social workers who are called in because of revelations by children. Stories are written by those who have suffered in order to help themselves overcome their difficulties and help others to do the same. There are accounts of how to detect the signs of abuse for police surgeons, forensic psychiatrists or paediatricians which spell out the unpleasant and distressing nature of the work. There are examinations of the family interactions by family thera pists, accounts of individual long-term psychotherapy with victims by adult or child psychotherapists and advice on group therapy methods for lay or professional workers. All of these deal with the problem after it has been exposed and Preface xi after it has been referred for specialist help. There was no book, however, to illuminate the skills, attitudes and knowledge needed by the doctor (or nurse) of first contact.

Few clinicians, however, are familiar with how to approach patients about past or current intimate partner violence and sexual abuse, and even fewer are aware of effective interventions. Violence Against Women makes available to health care providers essential information on this sensitive subject. Topics include the causes of violence, screening procedures, making referrals, legal issues, and the effects that treating survivors of violence can have on clinicians themselves. Groups with increased vulnerability or decreased ability to seek help, such as pregnant or elderly women, are given special consideration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctor-patient relationship is fraught with risk. Patients may be at risk from a doctor who misuses their position of authority, or is unclear where the appropriate boundaries lie. Doctors risk disciplinary or criminal proceedings when this happens. This book aims to address these risks, to assist clinicians in their daily relationships with patients, and to improve patient safety. The authors examine the ethical principles and how these may be taught; prevalence of abuse; regulation and sanctions; management and governance; remediation; and the roles of the different organisations that may be involved, such as the General Medical Council and medical protection societies. This is a practical guide to help clinicians avoid boundary violations and improve patient safety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book is a psychiatrist, and the survivor of sexual and emotional abuse by the psychiatrist who was her therapist. She employs two voices in the writing of her book: the first part of each chapter is a narration of her own experiences as a victim of abuse; the second part, an account of her journey as a psychiatrist towards understanding the meaning of the abuse and how to heal from it. Her journey includes having a second, very different, experience of therapy; listening to the stories of other survivors of abuse by health professionals; reading published accounts of such abuses; making her story public to professional and general audiences; being a member of a group dedicated to combating sexual abuse by therapists; talking to colleagues who have treated victims of abuse by health professionals; culling ideas from the literature on trauma and abuse; and treating patients who are themselves survivors of abuse by health professionals. Her book is a powerful blend of the personal and the professional that penetrates the 'conspiracy of silence' that still holds sway and prevents victims from getting the compassion, understanding, support, and financial and legal aid that they deserve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence within the family, whether directed against children, partners or elders, profoundly disturbs our notions of what the relationship between the family and the discipline of general practice should be. GPs are doctors to whole families and yet their relationships with patients are individual ones, drawing their strength from the principles of confidentiality, mutual trust and positive regard. Violence and abuse within families necessarily challenges all of these, creating a profusion of ethical, interpersonal and practical difficulties and dilemmas. At the same time the nature of general practice confers unique opportunities to deal effectively with family violence. GPs and GP registrars will find this book an invaluable and empowering resource. It brings together a broad range of expertise and opinion from relevant specialities and disciplines and sets family violence in its historical, epidemiological and societal context. It describes in separate sections, child abuse, domestic violence and elder abuse, its presentations, diagnosis and treatment; and suggests ways forward for its prevention and early detection. It draws throughout on the experience of GPs, health visitors and social workers, providing practical safe and workable guidelines. Family violence can present to any member of the primary care team and there is much here that will be of relevance and interest to them all.

Book excerpt: Written by a group of nationally-recognized physicians, Evaluation of the Sexually Abused Child, 2E is a comprehensive and authoritative resource that provides a step-by-step discussion of how to interview and clinically evaluate suspected child sexual abuse cases. The contributors draw on their extensive experience to provide sensitive and practical guidance on psychological aspects of abuse, conducting the medical interview and physical exam to make a diagnosis, sexually transmitted disease, and the role of the physician in court. This new edition includes updated information on lab techniques, revised protocols for intervention programs, and a host of new data from several recently released longitudinal studies that followed abused children into adolescence and adulthood. A key feature of the first edition, a photographic atlas documenting and classifying ambiguous signs of abuse, has been expanded by more than 40% to incorporate new photos on the sexual abuse of adolescents, patterns of healing trauma, and additional examples of normal variations and medical conditions.

This book was released on 2002-12-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with child abuse and neglect as it presents itself in primary care. All health professionals, including those who work in primary care, have an important role to play in the child protection process. Inappropriate management of suspected instances of child abuse may result in serious implications for the child, family and involved professionals. Primary health care teams have specific and unmet training needs in this area and many general practitioners express anxiety regarding their involvement in child protection work. The overall aim of this book is to enable members of the primary health care team to fulfil their responsibilities in the protection of children from the threat of abuse or neglect. Readers are made aware of the skills required both to protect children and to subsequently maintain relationships with families. The contents have been extended to include child protection issues in our multi-cultural society along with comparison of different systems across Europe. The book is primarily aimed at GPs and their teams; social workers and health care managers will also benefit from its unique treatment of child protection issues in a primary care setting. 'This book addresses these issues with sagacity and imagination. The reader (all primary care team members would benefit from it) is offered facts, skills, attitudes and insights to help in this difficult area. We can all do child protection better - let us use this book to achieve that aim.' From the foreword by Professor Michael Pringle, Immediate Past Chairman, Council of Royal College of General Practitioners
