Book excerpt: There really is no clean way to say this, so here goes: for as long as I can remember I have always loved animals, sex and music, especially percussion. In fact, I have been told I jerk harder than Seinfeld's Elaine Benes when I'm shaking my booty to a decent beat. Anyway, it is therefore no surprise that I steered my career into working with sharks and other marine animals, while keeping a private side business selling seductive lingerie and a few other toys -- of the adult nature -- and also occasionally playing my drums with friends. It's not easy to explain how all this came to be. There really was no master plan at the onset and I certainly didn't imagine I'd be doing half of the stuff I did over the years back in the days I was thinking about my future. I certainly didn't imagine my first marriage would open before it ended, nor did I imagine I'd be marrying Princess Leia in Vegas and I certainly didn't imagine I'd be sitting down to tell a whole lot of stories, some involving sharks, some planes, some stockings, some boats, some public aquaria, and some ball-gags and leather restraints, among many other things. But that is the way things happened and these pages kind of explain how all the pieces fit in the puzzle.

In fact, I have been told I jerk harder than Seinfelds Elaine Benes when Im shaking my booty to a decent beat. It is therefore no surprise that I steered my career into working with sharks and other marine animals, while keeping a private side business selling seductive lingerie and a few other toys of the adult nature - and also occasionally playing my drums with friends. Its not easy to explain how all this came to be. There really was no master plan at the onset and I certainly didnt imagine Id be doing half of the stuff I did over the years back in the days I was thinking about my future. I certainly didnt... ...imagine my first marriage would open before it ended, nor did I predict Id be marrying Princess Leia in Vegas and I certainly didnt see myself sitting down to write a whole lot of stories Some involving sharks, some airplanes, some a touch of naughtiness, some boats, and some public aquaria, among many other things. But that is the way things happened and these pages kind of explain how all the pieces fit in the puzzle. The gods have been very kind and have showered me with many stories to tell. The second book covers the period between 2005 and 2015, which is when I started my Flying Sharks business and began teaching. It's also the period when I got re-married by Darth Vader, but sadly fell prey to the Dark Side of the Force only one year after. However, although that period came with an infinite dose of sadness, the brave (new) world of online cupidesqueness provided for endless pages of colorful stories that would make ""Christian Grey"" blush and hopefully you, kind reader, as well. ;) The third... ...(and final) volume of this saga takes us back to 2010 and the monumental order to the almighty Istanbul Aquarium, which became a book of its own, when one chapter became two, and then three, and soon more than a dozen. Whether it was paying for one third of the total amount of imported goods in taxes, or wrestling with a boat captain about the number of cows he was to have on board, this adventure had us all pushed to the very limit, clymaxing in that horrific moment when a Turkish Airbus 300 crew member pushed us off the aircraft, moments before departure. And, in the end, a bonus chapter, focusing on 2016, annus horribilis in so many perspectives, until the gods of online dating traveled all the way to... Serbia, and brought unexpected news of Love and stability... I hope you enjoy reading these lines. I most certainly enjoyed - and enjoy - living them. Book excerpt: Carmine Appice has enjoyed a jaw-dropping rock-and-roll life—and now he is telling his scarcely believable story. Appice ran with teenage gangs in Brooklyn before becoming a global rock star in the Summer of Love, managed by the Mob. He hung with Hendrix, unwittingly paid for an unknown Led Zeppelin to support him on tour, taught John Bonham to play drums (and helped Fred Astaire too), and took part in Zeppelin's infamous deflowering of a groupie with a mud shark. After enrolling in Rod Stewart's infamous Sex Police, he hung out with Kojak, accidentally shared a house with Prince, was blood brothers with Ozzy Osbourne and was fired by Sharon. He formed an all-blond hair-metal band, jammed with John McEnroe and Steven Seagal, got married five times, slept with 4,500 groupies—and, along the way, became a rock legend by single-handedly reinventing hard rock and heavy metal drumming. His memoir, Stick It!, is one of the most extraordinary and outrageous rock-and-roll books of the early twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: This scientific detective story is the first book which explains clearly the science used by paleontologists, and the new, cutting-edge techniques that led to the discovery of Seismosaurus, the longest dinosaur yet known--and possibly the largest land animal to have ever lived. Gillette's first-person account of the project answers the most frequently asked questions about Seismosaurus: How was it discovered? How do we know it is a new species? How did it die? Part catalogue of the workings of paleontological science in the 1990s, the book also illustrates the exciting collaboration between Gillette, the chemists and physicists who helped to reconstruct Seismosaurus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969, a low-budget biker movie, Easy Rider, shocked Hollywood with its stunning success. An unabashed celebration of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll (onscreen and off), Easy Rider heralded a heady decade in which a rebellious wave of talented young filmmakers invigorated the movie industry. In Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, Peter Biskind takes us on the wild ride that was Hollywood in the '70s, an era that produced such modern classics as The Godfather, Chinatown, Shampoo, Nashville, Taxi Driver, and Jaws. Easy Riders, Raging Bulls vividly chronicles the exuberance and excess of the times: the startling success of Easy Rider and the equally alarming circumstances under which it was made, with drugs, booze, and violent rivalry between costars Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda dominating the set; how a small production company named BBS became the guiding spirit of the youth rebellion in Hollywood and how, along the way, some of its executives helped smuggle Huey Newton out of the country; how director Hal Ashby was busted for drugs and thrown in jail in Toronto; why Martin Scorsese attended the Academy Awards with an FBI escort when Taxi Driver was nominated; how George Lucas, gripped by anxiety, compulsively cut off his own hair while writing Star Wars, how a modest house on Nicholas Beach occupied by actresses Margot Kidder and Jennifer Salt became the unofficial headquarters for the New Hollywood; how Billy Friedkin tried to humiliate Paramount boss Barry Diller; and how screenwriter/director Paul Schrader played Russian roulette in his hot tub. It was a time when an "anything goes" experimentation prevailed both on the screen and off. After the success of Easy Rider, young film-school graduates suddenly found themselves in demand, and directors such as Francis Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, George Lucas, and Martin Scorsese became powerful figures. Even the new generation of film stars -- Nicholson, De Niro, Hoffman, Pacino, and Dunaway -- seemed a breed apart from the traditional Hollywood actors. Ironically, the renaissance would come to an end with Jaws and Star Wars, hugely successful films that would create a blockbuster mentality and crush innovation. Based on hundreds of interviews with the directors themselves, producers, stars, agents, writers, studio executives, spouses, and ex-spouses, this is the full, candid story of Hollywood's last golden age. Never before have so many celebrities talked so frankly about one another and about the drugs, sex, and money that made so many of them crash and burn. By turns hilarious and shocking, Easy Riders, Raging Bulls is the ultimate behind-the-scenes account of Hollywood at work and play.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most influential thrillers in media history, Jaws first surfaced as a best-selling novel by first-time novelist Peter Benchley in 1974, followed by the 1975 feature film directed by Steven Spielberg at the beginning of his storied career. Jaws is often considered the first "blockbuster," and successive generations of filmmakers have cited it as formative in their own creative development. For nearly 50 years, critics and scholars have studied how and why this seemingly straightforward thriller holds such mass appeal. This book of original essays assembles a range of critical thought on the impact and legacy of the film, employing new perspectives--historical, cinematic, literary, scientific and environmental--while building on the insights of previous writers. While varying in focus, the essays in this volume all explore why Jaws was so successful in its time and how it remains a prominent storytelling influence well into the 21st century.

Book excerpt: Pondering the musicality of everything from bird songs to the language he calls "motherese," Dr. Witchel illustrates the power of music and addresses the questions: Why do we have music? What does music do to our emotions? Can animals hear and understand music? What does music do to your brain? Why do people listen to sad music? Why do some people like classical but others only like heavy metal? Is there some essential feature to all music? You Are What You Hearis an erudite and entertaining study that is unique in many ways. No other book has thoroughly elaborated the connection between music and social territory in humans, although in other music-making species scientists have shown this connection to be clear-cut. Given the wealth of scientific evidence and historical narratives presented inYou Are What You Hear, an intellectual investigation of this avenue is long overdue. Written by a psychobiologist, the work straddles hard science and psychology, approaching music from a unique interdisciplinary perspective. Successfully bridging these strands of evidence,You Are What You Hearelucidates the significance of territory not only in music but in daily life. This lively and engaging book will have a broad appeal — not only to the general public, but to students interested in the relationship between music and culture. Anyone from seventeen to ninety-seven will have the potential to gain something from this book.

Book excerpt: When Robert Forster and Grant McLennan formed the Go-Betweens in Brisbane in 1977, they were determined to be different. They were angular, spare, and poetic when crashing directness was the prevailing style. Their heroes were Dylan, Creedence, and Television, when it was more fashionable to cite the Stooges and the New York Dolls. Their attitude was as punk as anyone’s, but their lyrical guitar pop stood in sharp contrast to the trends of the day. The Go-Betweens story is a fascinating one. With cornerstone drummer Lindy Morrison – and, later, additional members Robert Vickers and Amanda Brown – the band recorded six albums in the 1980s that are among the finest work of the decade, and earned them a reputation as “the ultimate cult band.” And as one reviewer of the original 1997 edition of this book noted, “Unlike most rock groups, the Go-Betweens had personalities as well as talent”—which makes for a compelling read, even if you’re not yet a fan. David Nichols relates the Go-Betweens story with wit and verve, and for this edition he completely updated the book, adding chapters on the members’ subsequent solo careers in the 1990s, the subsequent reuniting of Forster and McLennan under the Go-Betweens name, and the band’s flourishing second life in the new millennium, tragically cut short by the sudden death of Grant McLennan in 2005.

Book excerpt: Sex with multiple females, the abuse of drugs from marijuana to mushrooms, and ecstasy to tobacco, and cocaine to alcohol, and prescription pills to paradise was probably the reason why our relationship was facing pure pandemonium. We rode the surf; this getaway took its toll. I knew, in retrospect, this would happen the moment we planned the trip (except we didn't remember planning it), but I didn't think drugs and alcohol would spoil a good buzz this quickly. Grabbing the phone from my hands with a smile, Mr. Edwards-the blame for half of my mistakes-said, "Its over," and fell on the floor after he unplugged the phone from its outlet. Paradise Island, Bahamas, January 2005: Joseph James and Jeffrey Edwards are two men who push life to the edge. But they're on the verge of going overboard. Traveling to Paradise Island from Detroit, Michigan, the two cousins disrespect and destroy the tourist haven in an attempt to break the paradox between total control and reckless abandon. From mixing with happy families, high-stakes gambling, and nightlife with upper society to sharing a pint of rum with a homeless local and sleeping with random women, the pair's contribution to the Bahamas is nothing more than an abuse of free will and destiny.

Book excerpt: THE DIVERSITY OF FISHES The third edition of The Diversity of Fishes is a major revision of the widely adopted ichthyology textbook, incorporating the latest advances in the biology of fishes and covering taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, biogeography, ecology, and behavior. Key information on the evolution of various fishes is also presented, providing expansive and conclusive coverage on all key topics pertaining to the field. To aid in reader comprehension, each chapter begins with a summary that provides a broad overview of the content of that chapter, which may be particularly useful for those using the text for a course who don’t intend to address every chapter in detail. Detailed color photographs throughout the book demonstrate just some of the diversity and beauty of fishes that attract many to the field. A companion website provides related videos selected by the authors, instructor resources, and additional references and websites for further reading. Sample topics covered and learning resources included in The Diversity of Fishes are as follows: How molecular genetics has transformed many aspects of ichthyology The close relationship between structure and function, including adaptations to special environments Many physical and behavioral adaptations reflecting the fact that many fishes are both predators and prey Fish interactions with other species within fish assemblages and broader communities, plus their impacts on ecosystems Global maps that more accurately represent the comparative sizes of oceans and land masses than maps used in prior editions For students, instructors, and individuals with an interest in ichthyology, The Diversity of Fishes is an all-in-one introductory resource to the field, presenting vast opportunities for learning, many additional resources to aid in information retention, and helpful recommendations on where to go to explore specific topics further.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1998, GOD approached a man, to assist GOD and channel his will into the written word. This book is the result of that conversation. GOD is responsible for the flow, topics and discussions. The man simply wrote what GOD spoke and what thoughts he received. "GOD is speaking - Are you listening? My Story" is GOD'S full disclosure to his human family, including his laws of Life and Death. He speaks to Steve as a friend. That is, a friend of GOD'S, chosen by GOD. The fact that anyone would be allowed to hear his voice is astonishing. In this day and age of miracles, is it so far fetched not to believe? He speaks to Steve of his world...Heaven. He speaks of his Love for his human family. GOD tells it like he sees it. No soft touch, no political correctness, just the plain truth, GOD'S Truth.July 5th 1998 4:00 P.M.I AM the GOD of ALL. The reason for this writing is that the stories I AM about to unfold to you, through my friend Steve, are stories to teach, inspire and to create hope. Hope, in that when you greet me in my Heavenly Kingdom, you will have a better understanding, appreciation and moral imperatives, necessary to the alleviation of your guilt. I AM in the world as a spirit of Love, hope, divine inspiration and most of all understanding. I have tried to conquer you, and your fears, by sending messengers to your world, Moses, Abraham, Isaac and Jesus the Christ. I have been alive 50 million of your Earth years and the stories I AM about to tell you are just one of many, told countless times in my Kingdom.

Book excerpt: THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER New York Times bestselling author Alan Paul's in-depth narrative look at the Allman Brothers' most successful album, and a portrait of an era in rock and roll and American history. The Allman Brothers Band’s Brothers and Sisters was not only the band’s bestselling album, at over seven million copies sold, but it was also a powerfully influential release, both musically and culturally, one whose influence continues to be profoundly felt. Celebrating the album’s fiftieth anniversary, Brothers and Sisters the book delves into the making of the album, while also presenting a broader cultural history of the era, based on first-person interviews, historical documents, and in-depth research. Brothers and Sisters traces the making of the template-shaping record alongside the stories of how the Allman Brothers came to the rescue of a flailing Jimmy Carter presidential campaign and helped get the former governor of Georgia elected president; how Gregg Allman’s marriage to Cher was an early harbinger of an emerging celebrity media culture; and how the band’s success led to internal fissures. The book also examines the Allman Brothers' relationship with the Grateful Dead—including the most in-depth reporting ever on the Summer Jam at Watkins Glen, the largest rock festival ever—and describes how they inspired bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, helping create the southern rock genre. With exclusive access to hundreds of hours of never-before-heard interviews with every major player, including Dickey Betts and Gregg Allman, conducted by Allman Brothers Band archivist, photographer, and “Tour Mystic” Kirk West, Brothers and Sisters is an honest assessment of the band’s career, history, and highs and lows.
