Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There really is... ...no clean way to say this, so here goes: for as long as I can remember I have always loved animals, sex and music, especially percussion. In fact, I have been told I jerk harder than Seinfelds Elaine Benes when Im shaking my booty to a decent beat. It is therefore no surprise that I steered my career into working with sharks and other marine animals, while keeping a private side business selling seductive lingerie and a few other toys of the adult nature - and also occasionally playing my drums with friends. Its not easy to explain how all this came to be. There really was no master plan at the onset and I certainly didnt imagine Id be doing half of the stuff I did over the years back in the days I was thinking about my future. I certainly didnt... ...imagine my first marriage would open before it ended, nor did I predict Id be marrying Princess Leia in Vegas and I certainly didnt see myself sitting down to write a whole lot of stories Some involving sharks, some airplanes, some a touch of naughtiness, some boats, and some public aquaria, among many other things. But that is the way things happened and these pages kind of explain how all the pieces fit in the puzzle. The gods have been very kind and have showered me with many stories to tell. The second book covers the period between 2005 and 2015, which is when I started my Flying Sharks business and began teaching. It's also the period when I got re-married by Darth Vader, but sadly fell prey to the Dark Side of the Force only one year after. However, although that period came with an infinite dose of sadness, the brave (new) world of online cupidesqueness provided for endless pages of colorful stories that would make ""Christian Grey"" blush and hopefully you, kind reader, as well. ;) The third... ...(and final) volume of this saga takes us back to 2010 and the monumental order to the almighty Istanbul Aquarium, which became a book of its own, when one chapter became two, and then three, and soon more than a dozen. Whether it was paying for one third of the total amount of imported goods in taxes, or wrestling with a boat captain about the number of cows he was to have on board, this adventure had us all pushed to the very limit, clymaxing in that horrific moment when a Turkish Airbus 300 crew member pushed us off the aircraft, moments before departure. And, in the end, a bonus chapter, focusing on 2016, annus horribilis in so many perspectives, until the gods of online dating traveled all the way to... Serbia, and brought unexpected news of Love and stability... I hope you enjoy reading these lines. I most certainly enjoyed - and enjoy - living them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music defines us. To return the favor, we’ll stick up with zealous passion for the performers and bands that we love . . . and heap aspersions and ridicule upon people who dare to place their allegiances above our own. In Rock and Roll Cage Match, today’ s leading cultural critics, humorists, music journalists, and musicians themselves take sides in thirty of the all-time juiciest “who’s better” musical disputes. Marc Spitz on the Smiths vs. the Cure: “If the Smiths are its James Dean, the Cure are the Marlon Brando of modern rock.” Mick Stingley on Van Halen vs. Van Hagar: “Eddie Van Halen single-handedly (sometimes quite literally) conjured rapturous sounds, and reinvented the idea of what could be done with a guitar with his sleight of hand. . . . As for the lyrics . . . Where Roth had been nuanced and clever, relying on double entendres and sexual innuendo, Sammy was ham-fisted and cloying and just downright embarrassing. Gideon Yago on Nirvana vs. Metallica: “Here is why Nirvana will always be a better band than Metallica. It’s not because they hit harder (they do). It’s not because they are tighter (they’re definitely not). . . . It’s because Metallica is fundamentally about respecting rules—of metal, of production, of technicality—and Nirvana is about breaking those rules down in the pursuit of innovation. Metallica was metal. Nirvana was something else.” Touré on Michael Jackson vs. Prince: “[Prince] was the wild son of Jimi, the younger brother of Rick James and Richard Pryor, the ultrasexual black Casanova who told you up front that he had a dirty mind . . . Michael held the opposite appeal. His music was often about escaping through dance or being hopeful about the world.” Russ Meneve on Bruce Springsteen vs. Bon Jovi: “I really, truly mean it when I say, Mr. Springsteen, no disrespect . . . you are a legend. But in the Battle a da Jerz, when that thick chemical-waste smoke clears and the overly sprayed mall hair parts, the Jov man is the last man rockin’.” Whitney Pastorek on Whitney Houston vs. Mariah Carey: “Frankly, dry recitations of figures are just too easily negated by simple things like, say, bringing up someone’s horrible taste in choosing movie roles. Watch, I’ll do it right now: Yes, Mariah has seventeen number one singles, and Whitney only eleven. But Whitney made The Bodyguard, which is basically a classic, and Mariah starred in Glitter, a colossal suckfest of crapitude that should disqualify her on the spot.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What led scientists to have acrobats copulate inside an MRI machine? Why do wordless patterns of sound send shivers down our spines and tickle ancient parts of our brains? How did a chemist's quest to create a drug to ease the pain of childbirth result in the creation of LSD? And did it change our understanding of the brain forever? From tortoiseshell condoms to superstar athletes on hallucinogens, science writer Zoe Cormier dissects these and other burning questions, amplifying them with insights from some of the world's bravest, cleverest, and downright weirdest scientists. Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n' Roll explores science at the edge, where scientists ask big, strange questions -- and sometimes experiment on themselves to find answers. It shines a light into the lesser-known corners of scientific research to gain insight into the nature of consciousness, happiness, and humanity. Not to mention our parties. Here are stories of unconventional scientists, innovative inquiries, hedonistic impulses -- and how the renegades of science have illuminated the secrets of our baser impulses.

Book excerpt: This is a witty, sparklingly argued study about the links between rock, maleness, and the Greek myths. In a boldly original thesis, Ruth Padel examines a hundred interweaving strands of image and influence. She takes us from the pop single to the operatic aria; from opera to Greek drama; and from there to the Greek myths which became the West's blueprint of sexual adventure. She relates the spotlit, adulated rock god to his classical ancestors - Dionysus, Narcissus, Hercules. She also tracks the story of rock through 20th century history, investigating the links betwen male dreams of violence, misogyny, and - above all - of blackness.

Book excerpt: This book is about an era in our country when American children received more freedom than any other time in American history. After the Vietnam War ended, some American Baby Boomers totally abused this freedom. This book contains many stories about some of those Baby Boomers who were taking full advantage of these times, with no regret or regard of the consequences. Many of the stories you will read about are unethical, immoral, and sometimes disturbing. This book is about a Baby Boomers life, and many of the unique people and events which occurred through these times. You will also read about certain subjects such as sex, drugs, and rock and roll, which were the trademarks of that era. The Baby Boomers not only broke all the rules which took generations to establish: They set new trends and guidelines for many generations to come. They also created a whole new way of life for the American child. Originally from the suburbs of Detroit Michigan, Gary Dixon managed to escape the magnetism of the big city life. He now calls Clearwater Florida his home. From a family of nine children, his family could definitely be considered a Baby Boomer family. With the Baby Boom era in full force, there were not too many places in America to elude the temptations of recreational drug use, and the casual sex scene. Since the Baby Boomers created this new kind of lifestyle, almost every young person in America became a part of it. Gary Dixon and many of his friends not only became a part it, they took it to a whole new level. Living through this era, his life became very unique and eccentric, and he developed many stories along the way. He would like to share these stories with anyone interested, or any other Baby Boomers who grew up through these times.

And, looking at music made by female artists, the authors ask: must it always be this way?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most influential thrillers in media history, Jaws first surfaced as a best-selling novel by first-time novelist Peter Benchley in 1974, followed by the 1975 feature film directed by Steven Spielberg at the beginning of his storied career. Jaws is often considered the first "blockbuster," and successive generations of filmmakers have cited it as formative in their own creative development. For nearly 50 years, critics and scholars have studied how and why this seemingly straightforward thriller holds such mass appeal. This book of original essays assembles a range of critical thought on the impact and legacy of the film, employing new perspectives--historical, cinematic, literary, scientific and environmental--while building on the insights of previous writers. While varying in focus, the essays in this volume all explore why Jaws was so successful in its time and how it remains a prominent storytelling influence well into the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Strippers, Showgirls, and Sharks, popular syndicated theatre critic Peter Filichia chronicles the American musical by looking at those shows that did not win the Tony Award. Every spring the American Theatre Wing bestows its annual Tony Awards. Only those shows that have reached Broadway are nominated and while all Tonys are created equal, the universally acknowledged biggest prize is the Best Musical Tony. But did the best musical always win Best Musical? And were there other factors that kept a more deserving show from winning? Filichia answers these questions and more as he looks at all 153 previous Best Musical Nominees that didn't win. In 1959 when Ethel Merman and a variety of strippers took the stage, there was a tie between 'The Sound of Music' and 'Fiorello'. In 1971, Stephen Sondheim's 'Follies' and its ghostly showgirls lost to a 'groovy' re-tuning of 'Two Gentlemen of Verona' best forgotten. And, in 1957, 'West Side Story' was bested by the fine people of River City Iowa singing their Americana hearts out in 'The Music Man'."--Publisher description.
