Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates two triumphs in modern psychology: the successful development and application of a solid measure of general intelligence; and the personal courage and skills of the man who made this possible - Arthur R. Jensen from Berkeley University. The volume traces the history of intelligence from the early 19th century approaches, to the most recent analyses of the hierarchical structure of cognitive abilities, and documents the transition from a hopelessly confused concept of intelligence to the development of an objective measure of psychometric g. The contributions illustrate the impressive power g has with respect to predicting educational achievement, getting an attractive job, or social stratification. The book is divided into six parts as follows: Part I presents the most recent higher-stream analysis of cognitive abilities, Part II deals with biological aspects of g, such as research on brain imaging, glucose uptake, working memory, reaction time, inspection time, and other biological correlates, and concludes with the latest findings in g-related molecular genetics. Part III addresses demographic aspects of g, such as geographic-, race-, and sex-differences, and introduces differential psychological aspects as well. Part IV concentrates on the g nexus, and relates such highly diverse topics as sociology, genius, retardation, training, education, jobs, and crime to g. Part V contains chapters critical of research on g and its genetic relationship, and also presents a rejoinder. Part VI looks at one of the greatest contemporary psychologists, Professor Emeritus Arthur R. Jensen as teacher and mentor.

Book excerpt: All individuals who operate in the business sphere, whether as consumers, employers, employees, entrepreneurs, or financial traders to name a few constituents, share a common biological heritage and are defined by a universal human nature. As such, it is surprising that so few business scholars have incorporated biological and evolutionary-informed theories within their conceptual toolboxes. This edited book addresses this lacuna by culling chapters at the intersection of the evolutionary behavioral sciences and specific business contexts including in marketing, consumer behavior, advertising, innovation and creativity, intertemporal choice, negotiations, competition and cooperation in organizational settings, sex differences in workplace patterns, executive leadership, business ethics, store design, behavioral decision making, and electronic communication. To reword the famous aphorism of T. G. Dobzhansky, nothing in business makes sense except in the light of evolution.

Book excerpt: Browne makes a case against women in combat, based on research in anthropology, biology, history, psychology, sociology, and law, as well as military memoirs. It asks hard questions that challenge the assumptions of feminists. For instance: 5 Has warfare really changed so much as to reverse the almost unanimous history of all-male armed forces? 5 Are men and women really equivalent in combat skills, even leaving aside physical strength? 5 Do female troops respond to traditional types of motivations? 5 Can the bonds of unit cohesion form in a co-ed military unit? 5 Can an all-volunteer military afford to reject women?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the first wide-ranging critical review of validity generalization (VG)--a method that has dominated the field since the publication of Schmidt and Hunter's (1977) paper "Development of a General Solution to the Problem of Validity Generalization." This paper and the work that followed had a profound impact on the science and practice of applied psychology. The research suggests that fundamental relationships among tests and criteria, and the constructs they represent are simpler and more regular than they appear. Looking at the history of the VG model and its impact on personnel psychology, top scholars and leading researchers of the field review the accomplishments of the model, as well as the continuing controversies. Several chapters significantly extend the maximum likelihood estimation with existing models for meta analysis and VG. Reviewing 25 years of progress in the field, this volume shows how the model can be extended and applied to new problems and domains. This book will be important to researchers and graduate students in the areas of industrial organizational psychology and statistics.

Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard was a contentious issue in three of his election campaigns: Governor of Texas - 1994, President of the United States - 2000, 2004. This monograph for historians explains the arcane, armed forces reserve system during the time of Bush’s military service (1968-1974) and presents a history of such service. Bush’s military biography is based primarily on source documents released by the White House in 2003 and 2004, plus those obtained by researchers through Freedom of Information Act requests. Selected documents from the former president’s military service record appear in the 103-page appendix and are cited in the 51 pages of textual material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does biology help explain why women, on average, earn less money than men? Is there any evolutionary basis for the scarcity of female CEOs in Fortune 500 companies? According to Kingsley Browne, the answer may be yes. Biology at Work brings an evolutionary perspective to bear on issues of women in the workplace: the "glass ceiling," the "gender gap" in pay, sexual harassment, and occupational segregation. While acknowledging the role of discrimination and sexist socialization, Browne suggests that until we factor real biological differences between men and women into the equation, the explanation remains incomplete. Browne looks at behavioral differences between men and women as products of different evolutionary pressures facing them throughout human history. Womens biological investment in their offspring has led them to be on average more nurturing and risk averse, and to value relationships over competition. Men have been biologically rewarded, over human history, for displays of strength and skill, risk taking, and status acquisition. These behavioral differences have numerous workplace consequences. Not surprisingly, sex differences in the drive for status lead to sex differences in the achievement of status. Browne argues that decision makers should recognize that policies based on the assumption of a single androgynous human nature are unlikely to be successful. Simply removing barriers to inequality will not achieve equality, as women and men typically value different things in the workplace and will make different workplace choices based on their different preferences. Rather than simply putting forward the "nature" side of the debate, Browne suggests that dichotomies such as nature/nurture have impeded our understanding of the origins of human behavior. Through evolutionary biology we can understand not only how natural selection has created predispositions toward certain types of behavior but also how the social environment interacts with these predispositions to produce observed behavioral patterns.

Book excerpt: An updated version of Deborah Whetzel and George Wheaton's earlier volume, this text is a well-organized sourcebook for fundamental practices in industrial psychology and human resources management. Applied Measurement describes the process of job analysis and test development with practical examples and discusses various methods for measuring job performance. Its primary purpose is to provide practical, systematic guidance on how to develop the various kinds of measurement instruments frequently used in the fields of industrial psychology and human resources management to assess personnel. With easy to follow guidance written in straightforward language, Applied Measurement contains three new chapters focusing on training and experience measures, assessment centers, and methods for defending the content validity of tests; includes contributions from many prominent researchers in the field, all of whom have had a great deal of applied experience; begins each chapter with an overview describing the job analysis or measurement method; and uses one job, that of an electrician, as an example throughout the book so that readers can easily understand how to apply job analysis data for the purposes of test development and job performance measurement. This practical, concise book is recommended for students and entry-level practitioners in the fields of industrial psychology and human resources.
