The book consists of approximately ninety-seven thousand words. Each story is a thriller in its own right. This septology is filled with science fiction, unbelievable exploits, fantasy, and strange and unusual events. Story 1 concerns a woman who is falsely accused of embezzlement. Her beagle dog keeps her out of jail as they travel through time and other dimensions to avoid the law. Story 2 is about the three Americas—the United, Confederate, and African States of America. Here, there are very different histories from the traditional United States of America. It involves world wars, nuclear fallout, radiation, destroyed ozone, and near extinction of the human race. Story 3 concerns alien abductions, hybrid species of aliens and humans, and an inept law enforcement agency of local police and the FBI. What will become of the human race? Story 4 is about three people from different walks of life who are given second chances at deciding their ultimate fates in eternity. Do they heed the warnings? Story 5 is one of human metamorphosis. This main character can change his molecular structure at any time into anyone or anything. He is devoid of compassion and love. Story 6 is a writing of a woman who needs a shining white night. What she gets is an albino rhino that kills evil people. The cops are blaming the woman. Story 7 is about a worldwide blackout that lasts for ten months. It reveals how people resort to primitive ways and evil. It's a story of rape, murder, mate swapping, cannibalism, and self-preservation.

Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon comes an exciting and thought-provoking science fiction epic—a grand story of annihilation and survival spanning five thousand years. What would happen if the world were ending? A catastrophic event renders the earth a ticking time bomb. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise an ambitious plan to ensure the survival of humanity far beyond our atmosphere, in outer space. But the complexities and unpredictability of human nature coupled with unforeseen challenges and dangers threaten the intrepid pioneers, until only a handful of survivors remain . . . Five thousand years later, their progeny—seven distinct races now three billion strong—embark on yet another audacious journey into the unknown . . . to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth. A writer of dazzling genius and imaginative vision, Neal Stephenson combines science, philosophy, technology, psychology, and literature in a magnificent work of speculative fiction that offers a portrait of a future that is both extraordinary and eerily recognizable. As he did in Anathem, Cryptonomicon, the Baroque Cycle, and Reamde, Stephenson explores some of our biggest ideas and perplexing challenges in a breathtaking saga that is daring, engrossing, and altogether brilliant.

Book excerpt: A near-future thriller of a devastating alien invasion from the paleontologist who inspired Jurassic Park and the award-winning science fiction author. There were always those who disagreed with broadcasting signals into the deepest reaches of outer space, because our mere existence could be taken as a threat. They were right to be concerned . . . In the spring of 2076, just days short of America’s tricentennial celebrations, every inhabited surface in the solar system gets wiped out by a catastrophic storm of relativistic bombs, flaming swords that pierced the sky. The only two survivors left on Earth exist in a submersible that had been exploring the Titanic’s final resting place on the bottom of the North Atlantic. In space, only the settlers in small, asteroid-based colonies have gone unnoticed by the aliens—for now. But any sign of life, any call for help, might bring the Intruders straight to them. These far-flung survivors are now on their own, stalked by a ruthless, faceless enemy straight out of the nightmares of humanity’s greatest minds—those lone voices whose warnings went ignored. “[A] novel of such conceptual ferocity and scientific plausibility that it amounts to a reinvention of that old Wellsian staple, [alien invasion].” —The New York Times Book Review “Relentless . . . The ultimate disaster novel . . . A thought-experiment and warning.” —The Denver Post “A whirlwind of ideas . . . full of action and danger . . . Pellegrino and Zebrowski are working territory not too far removed from Arthur C. Clarke’s, and anywhere Clarke is popular, this book should be, too.” —Booklist

Michael Evans, Publishers Weekly In simple words, this book is about a dream; not being afraid to chase after it, and a challenge or two along the way. This book is about time, hardly an ally to an aging author. This book is also about perseverance, dedication, and long hours of loneliness; not exactly a writer's best friend. For this book is about believing that the author just might be one of those bold enough to catch their dream.

Book excerpt: Grey's novels – however denigrated by critics as empurpled froths of 'virgins, villains and varmints' – were only part of the allure that fixed his name in the hearts of millions of Americans. Zane Grey was a self-made model of rugged rural virtue overimbued with what the critic Heywood Broun acidly called "the sanity, the strength and the wholesomeness" of his novels; a teetotaler opposed to the "jiggle and toddle and wiggle" of jazz-age dancing; and a staunch champion of clean outdoor living and hard work and righteous, simple codes of conduct. — The New York Times This selection specially chosen by the literary critic August Nemo, contains the following stories: Amber's Mirage The Ranger Don: The Story Of A Lion Dog The Wolf Tracker Lure of the River A Missouri Schoolmarm Monty Price's Nightingale

Book excerpt: EXPLAINING MYSELF This is the most mind-boggling thing for the reader, and if I am honest, for myself. Just imagine a book, me, could read its readers. I have no idea how it happens, and it is beyond me to imagine why it does. It has been said that I am like the 'invisible' villain in a crime story. The postman or the waiter who is taken for granted and who can see what is happening but remains unseen. I am the fly on the wall, the butler looking through a keyhole. I must emphasise that I am an observer, not a voyeur. I am a book, yes, a simple book and as I said already, without the ability to see and feel thoughts, emotions and intentions. Please laugh at some, cry at others but above all be entertained by a different perspective on the lives of others. I am not a gossip. I enjoy telling tales like the old storytellers in the past who would sit around fires and fascinate the audience. Some of my tales are perhaps funny, others sometimes sad. Most of all they are to meant to provoke your thoughts and emotions as they reflect what I have gathered from the previous consumers of my observations in my other books. We all like to know the distasteful secrets of others but it can be difficult to get them at first hand. Yet, something seemingly detached and innocent can be the receptacle and the exposer of those hidden truths about lies. Most of us will know that with other people we hear the stories they want to share but not the ones they want to forget. Your story is hidden but, for others their tales are an open book for all to see. I will tell you a great deal, including how I, a mere book, killed a person. And there are stories about gender changes, criminals, cheats and lovers, to one about a man who tricked his way into a care home, fell in love and got thrown out. These are just an introduction to lots and lots of a huge variety of short stories. So, in this book there are light and dark thoughts and many hues in between. I will tell you more later.
