Book excerpt: Located along the shores of the Charleston harbor, Mount Pleasant is a graceful, enchanting community known for its exquisite views of the water and landscape. Once comprised of five small hamlets, the area has seen phenomenal increases in both business and population, a growth that was correctly predicted when the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge linked the town with Charleston in 1929. It is a place where small-town charm lingers, even among the fast-paced life in which most residents now take part. Mount Pleasant: The Friendly Town begins the community's story where Mount Pleasant: The Victorian Village left off, and it bridges the 1930s with modern times. This compelling history illustrates the ways in which Mount Pleasant coped with the happenings of the 20th century, including such far-reaching events as World War II and the recovery following the Great Depression, and those much more intimate such as the devastation of Hurricane Hugo and the sesquicentennial celebration of the town. Readers will experience this unique area of South Carolina through the eyes of the residents who lived here during the town's coming of age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicago's 1933 world's fair set a new direction for international expositions. Earlier fairs had exhibited technological advances, but Chicago's fair organizers used the very idea of progress to buoy national optimism during the Depression's darkest years. Orchestrated by business leaders and engineers, almost all former military men, the fair reflected a business-military-engineering model that envisioned a promising future through science and technology's application to everyday life. But not everyone at Chicago's 1933 exposition had abandoned notions of progress that entailed social justice and equality, recognition of ethnicity and gender, and personal freedom and expression. The fair's motto, "Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Conforms," was challenged by iconoclasts such as Sally Rand, whose provocative fan dance became a persistent symbol of the fair, as well as a handful of other exceptional individuals, including African Americans, ethnic populations and foreign nationals, groups of working women, and even well-heeled socialites. Cheryl R. Ganz offers the stories of fair planners and participants who showcased education, industry, and entertainment to sell optimism during the depths of the Great Depression. This engaging history also features eighty-six photographs--nearly half of which are full color--of key locations, exhibits, and people, as well as authentic ticket stubs, postcards, pamphlets, posters, and other it

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do thousands of Mormons devote their summer vacations to following the Mormon Trail? Why does the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Day Saints spend millions of dollars to build monuments and Visitor Centers that believers can visit to experience the history of their nineteenth-century predecessors who fled westward in search of their promised land? Why do so many Mormon teenagers dress up in Little-House-on-the-Prairie-style garb and push handcarts over the highest local hills they can find? And what exactly is a "traveling Zion"? In Pioneers in the Attic, Sara Patterson analyzes how and why Mormons are engaging their nineteenth-century past in the modern era, arguing that as the LDS community globalized in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, its relationship to space was transformed. Following their exodus to Utah, nineteenth-century Mormons believed that they must gather together in Salt Lake Zion - their new center place. They believed that Zion was a place you could point to on a map, a place you should dwell in to live a righteous life. Later Mormons had to reinterpret these central theological principles as their community spread around the globe, but to say that they simply spiritualized concepts that had once been understood literally is only one piece of the puzzle. Contemporary Mormons still want to touch and to feel these principles, so they mark and claim the landscapes of the American West with versions of their history carved in stone. They develop rituals that allow them not only to learn the history of the nineteenth-century journey west, but to engage it with all of their senses. Pioneers in the Attic reveals how modern-day Mormons have created a sense of community and felt religion through the memorialization of early Mormon pioneers of the American West, immortalizing a narrative of shared identity through an emphasis on place and collective memory.

Book excerpt: In a compelling inquiry into public events ranging from the building of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial through ethnic community fairs to pioneer celebrations, John Bodnar explores the stories, ideas, and symbols behind American commemorations over the last century. Such forms of historical consciousness, he argues, do not necessarily preserve the past but rather address serious political matters in the present.

Book excerpt: In 1806, Rudolph Bair came to Ohio from Pennsylvania and settled on one of the highest points in Stark County and called it Paris. After its establishment in 1814, this town became an important center of business and the arts. As a stagecoach stop on the main road from Pittsburgh to the West, this village evolved into a hub of American culture. By the late 1800s, Paris had dry goods stores, a drug store, two hotels, wagon factories, harness shops, shoe shops, blacksmith shops, a meat market, mills, a vinegar factory, and three churches. Local farmers also came to Paris to do business, worship in Paris's churches, and absorb the latest news. The legacy of this village and its surrounding farmland lives on here in photographs, artifacts, and descendents of early settlers.

Book excerpt: A gold rush in the 1790s brought people to an area in North Carolina known as White Plains. With the promise of prosperity from the gold rush and an abundance of land suitable for farming, the area was soon settled by Scotch-Irish and German pioneers. As the railroad was being built, officials asked the local postmistress to name the new railroad station. She chose Kings Mountain, after the Revolutionary War battle fought eight miles south. Over time, Kings Mountain has flourished with industries, churches, education, and cultural institutions while the friendly, hardworking residents have found success in the mines and textile mills. Kings Mountain looks back over 100 years of the city's residents as they work, study, worship, play, and celebrate their heritage.
