Book Synopsis Nuclear Energy in the Gulf by : The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research

This book was released on 2009-10-05 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future heralds a potential crisis in power supply in view of growing global and domestic demand for fossil fuel energy, particularly in supplying power for seawater desalination in the case of the Arabian Gulf region. The possibility of fossil fuel depletion on the one hand, and the increasing rate of development in the GCC countries on the other, has prompted Arab Gulf states to consider the development of peaceful nuclear energy as an alternative source of power generation. In order to provide a realistic strategic review of this topic, as well as various strategies with which to guarantee its achievement and benefit from the experience of other countries, the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) convened its 14th Annual Energy Conference under the title “Nuclear Energy in the Gulf,” on November 24–26, 2008 in Abu Dhabi, hosting a group of distinguished energy experts from various academic, professional and technical backgrounds. This book comprises a valuable collection of the papers presented at the conference. It identifies the motives behind the development of peaceful nuclear energy programs in the Gulf states as well as the local and regional implications of such programs, and examines the role of nuclear energy in the context of Gulf energy security and climate change. The inherent risks and opportunities of managing nuclear power are explored through a discussion of security infrastructure, non-proliferation standards and the role of international cooperation in the field of nuclear technology and long-term development. The book also analyzes factors pertaining to the economic viability of the nuclear energy option and its political and social implications, drawing on international experiences of existing civilian nuclear programs in other parts of the world. Examples presented in this volume include case studies of Japan and Germany, and a comparative outlook assessing the respective programs of Iran, Israel, Pakistan and India.

Download or read book How Do You Get Value for Money from Environmental Work During Fossil Power Plant Rehabilitation Projects?. written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lambton Generating Station is a four-unit, 2,000-megawatt coal-fired power plant located on the St Clair River south of Sarnia, Ontario. This paper describes the environmental approval process and environmentally-related work conducted at the plant, including equipment rehabilitation, installation of flue gas scrubbers plus associated systems, and installation of combustion process modifications. The paper discusses eight questions which should be asked regarding environmental services during fossil-fuel plant rehabilitation projects, with the Lambton experience used as illustration. Topics of these questions include the differences in environmental requirements between newly constructed plants and plants undergoing rehabilitation; environmental regulations; when to involve environmental professionals; scheduling; costs; the interface between between plant operations and construction work; and keys to success.

Book Synopsis Environment, Power, and Society for the Twenty-First Century by : Howard T. Odum
Download or read book Environment, Power, and Society for the Twenty-First Century written by Howard T. Odum and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-08 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard T. Odum possessed one of the most innovative minds of the twentieth century. He pioneered the fields of ecological engineering, ecological economics, and environmental accounting, working throughout his life to better understand the interrelationships of energy, environment, and society and their importance to the well-being of humanity and the planet. This volume is a major modernization of Odum's classic work on the significance of power and its role in society, bringing his approach and insight to a whole new generation of students and scholars. For this edition Odum refines his original theories and introduces two new measures: emergy and transformity. These concepts can be used to evaluate and compare systems and their transformation and use of resources by accounting for all the energies and materials that flow in and out and expressing them in equivalent ability to do work. Natural energies such as solar radiation and the cycling of water, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen are diagrammed in terms of energy and emergy flow. Through this method Odum reveals the similarities between human economic and social systems and the ecosystems of the natural world. In the process, we discover that our survival and prosperity are regulated as much by the laws of energetics as are systems of the physical and chemical world.
