Book excerpt: From the Gallery website: The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013 is designed by multi award-winning Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. He is the thirteenth and, at 41, youngest architect to accept the invitation to design a temporary structure for the Serpentine Gallery. The most ambitious architectural programme of its kind worldwide, the Serpentine's annual Pavilion commission is one of the most anticipated events on the cultural calendar. Past Pavilions have included designs by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei (2012), Frank Gehry (2008), the late Oscar Niemeyer (2003) and Zaha Hadid, who designed the inaugural structure in 2000. We are thrilled to be working with one of the most fascinating architects in the world today. A visionary, who has conceived an extraordinary response to our invitation to design the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, Sou Fujimoto has designed a structure that will enthral everyone that encounters it throughout the summer. --Julia Peyton-Jones, Director, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director, Serpentine Gallery

Book excerpt: The American artist Paul Chan has gained international acclaim for his video work, drawings and installations that blend a novel drafting aesthetic with philosophical reflections on politics, religion, sex and life. This beautifully produced monograph, published on the occasion of Chan's highly anticipated one-person exhibition at New York's recently unveiled New Museum of Contemporary Art, presents the first significant overview of his work. Spanning from the late 1990s through today, it is named for Chan's most recent project, The 7 Lights (2005-07), a series of large-scale digital projections and drawings that "hallucinate" the Seven Days of Creation. Paul Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1973 and raised in Nebraska. Currently based in New York, he is represented by Greene Naftali Gallery and has had solo museum exhibitions at The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia; the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; and the UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.

Book excerpt: Every year the Serpentine Gallery, located in the heart of Hyde Park in central London, invites an internationally renowned architect or designer to design for them a temporary pavilion in their grounds for the summer. To coincide with the opening of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2007 by Olafur Eliasson and Kjetil Thorsen, the Serpentine Gallery and Trolley Books are pleased to announce the launch of the publication of Serpentine Gallery 24-hour Marathon: London. Small and with a soft-cover in the format of a traditional 'flipbook', the book is a lively representation of last year's now legendary 24-hour marathon of interviews, held with some of the greatest names in international contemporary culture, as part of the programme of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2006. The interviews were hosted by the architect of the Pavilion, Rem Koolhaas, and the Serpentine Gallery's Co-director of Exhibitions and Programmes, Hans Ulrich Obrist. The 24-hour, non-stop interview event featured over 60 world-renowned artists, architects, writers, designers and theorists, among them David Adjaye, Damien Hirst, Gilbert and George, Hussein Chalayan and Doris Lessing, as well as the Director of the Serpentine Gallery, Julia Peyton-Jones. From 6 pm on Friday28th June 2006 until 6pm on Saturday 29th, Koolhaas' Pavilion welcomed the public to join them in this landmark event, with many people staying for the entire duration. This 'flip-book' was conceived as a way of responding creatively to the marathon by producing a publication that was deliberately playful and tactile, giving a sense of speed, excitement and spontaneity of the Interview Marathon event. A highly visual and energetic book for its small size, it features over 150 colour and black and white illustrations and photographs interspersed with bite-sized text extracts from the interviews, and moves along in chronological order of the 24 hours. An introduction by Julia Peyton-Jones talks of the history of the Serpe

Book excerpt: The major outdoor sculptures by acclaimed London-based artist Anish Kapoor are currently on show in the beautiful settings of Kensington Gardens, sited to contrast and reflect the changing colours, foliage and weather. Despite their monumental scale, the works appear as pure reflection of their surroundings: the sky, trees, water, wildlife and changing seasons. The distortions in the works mirror-like surfaces call into question the viewers relationship to both the work itself and the surrounding environment. This catalogue of Kapoors installation is brilliantly illustrated with photographs of the works in situ. It is also the first monograph to feature a comprehensive overview of every one of Kapoors stainless steel sculptures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the example of music publication, Source Books in Architecture offers an alternative to the traditional architectural monograph. If one is interested in hearing music, he or she simply buys the desired recording. If, however, one wishes to study a particular piece in greater depth, it is possible to purchase the score--the written code that more clearly elucidates the structure, organization, and creative process that brings the work into being. This series is offered in the same spirit. Each Source Book focuses on the work of a particular architect or on a special topic in contemporary architecture and is meant to expose the foundations and details of the work in question. The work is documented through early studies, models, renderings, working drawings, writings, and photographs at a level of detail that allows complete and careful study of a project from conception to completion. The graphic component is accompanied by commentary from the architect and critics that further explore the technical and cultural content of the work.

Book excerpt: The Making of Things is about effect and intention in the schematic architectural model, a deep dive into the nature of architectonic form as the underlying syntax for all architectural work. By focusing on primitive geometries alongside fundamental principles of architectural thinking and making, this book enhances the reader’s capacity to intellectually and physically craft models that effectively communicate intention. With over 650 diagrams, this book acts as an expansive visual glossary that reveals the underlying structure of architectonics and acts as an encyclopedia of formal possibilities. Supporting essays in the book explore the nature of perception, abstraction, and metaphor to provide a theoretical basis of formal effects in architecture. This structure enables readers to make clear and direct connections between the things you construct and the reasons you construct them. This book is a bridge from the what to the why of form-making. It is a pedagogical notebook, a design primer that prompts discourse about the nature of objects. This is a must-have desk reference for beginning architecture and interior design students to stimulate their creative approaches and gain foundational knowledge of the underlying effects of formal typologies and how they manifest themselves in built forms around the world.
