Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Sermons Preached in St. Paul's Cathedral, and Before the University of Oxford Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh. - 1 Timothy iii, 16. At length, my brethren, the Advent season has reached its close, and we are at Christmas eve. The period of expectation is over, and we are almost entering upon the early hours of that great and blessed festival on which the Christian Church keeps the birthday of her Founder; the day upon which He whom Christendom names the Saviour of the world was born of a human mother and entered this world to take His place among the things and scenes of Time. The Apostle's words to Timothy put before us forcibly and concisely the great master-truth which gives Christmas its meaning Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh. It is not the birthday Of a mere Sage and Philanthropist, which we celebrate to-morrow. That might be in itself reasonable and natural enough; but Christmas means much more than that. Christmas means the entrance into the human world of One who was at once its Architect and its Judge, under conditions which made Him the peer Of the poorest and youngest amongst us. It is the introduction of a new principle of life - into humanity which we thus commemorate. It is in fact nothing less than a new starting point in the world's history. It is the opening of a new fountain of salvation for man, unknown to him before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons, Preached at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, New York, During the Year 1861 Some of those friends who listened to the sermons contained in this volume have expressed a desire to see them in print, and thought they would do good. This friendly counsel has not been acted upon without hesitation. The great scarcity of Catholic sermons in English would seem to afford motive enough for publishing, though it is feared that these may fall too far below the standard. Certainly, they make no pretence to brilliant passages of imagination, flowers of style, or appeals to popular enthusiasm these not comporting with the serious and earnest work in which we are engaged. But we trust that they will be found plain, simple, and direct, and that there may be those among our Catholic brethren who will derive an appreciable benefit from their perusal - some clearer view of Christian doctrine or moral duty, some thought to touch the heart, and draw it upward to God. If so, our purpose will have been accomplished. With so much of explan ation we send out these few sermons into the world; doubting, somewhat, if all who heard them when they came living and warm from the preacher's lips, and listened with interest then, will prize them now as they lie cold and uncolored on the paper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Cathedral as a Witness for Christ: A Sermon Preached in the Cathedral Church of St. Paul on the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, 1880 Of what kind or character was the first cathedral that stood on this site we know little or nothing. It was pro bably what would seem to us a small and rude structure, fitted to the wants of those who built it, corresponding to the ideas of beauty and suitability entertained at the time; and possibly regarded by the men of the period when it was erected with as much reverence and affection as is felt by us towards the glorious building in which we are now assembled. What is really known about it is that 'when this province received the word of truth by the preaching of Mellitus, King Ethelbert built the Church of St. Paul in the city of London, where he and his successors should have their episcopal see and that London, the metropolis of the province of the East Saxons, was 'the mart of many nations resorting to it by sea and land.'1 To attain to this character at the beginning of the seventh century was easier than it would now be; and it is probable that we should look upon the London that then was as little more than a village or small town. But from what the chronicler says it is clear that it was a most important matter for Christ to have a witness in the cathedral church of this mart of commerce, and that it would attract the notice, and we hope lead to the conversion of many, of the heathen people amongst whom it was placed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old and the New: Two Sermons Preached in St. Paul's Church, Philadelphia the Last Sunday of 1902 and the First Sunday of 1903 Paul does not mean that he absolutely forgot everything in the past. He never forgot the days when he was a persecutor - the memory of his violent opposition to Christ in years past stirred him to the last to more earnest and hearty devo tion to his Redeemer, to burn out the old shame in flames of love and service. He never forgot his friends. His epistles are full of grate ful mentions of those who in days gone had shown him kindness. He never forgot the good ness of God. His life was one long anthem of joy. Paul does not mean any such forgetting as this. Yet there is a forgetting which is part of every one's duty. Forgetting the things which are behind. We are about at the ending of the year. There are many things that we should not carry out of this old year into a new. When a family is removing from one house to another, especially if they have been quite a while in the old house, there are likely to be many things that they would better leave behind, either having an auction or a bonfire. There is rubbish in most of our lives that we should get rid of before we enter the New Year's paths. A friend of mine has written a little book which she calls The Evolution of a Girl's Ideal. The text of the book is a sentence which the author says she found somewhere a good while ago The way of life is wonderful; it is by abandon ment. Most people believe that the way of life is by acquisition, by getting things, by adding to their possessions. The way to grow rich is to keep all you have and continue to add to your wealth - saving and accumulating. By and by, if we are wise, we learn that it is by abandonment, by giving up things, by leaving things behind, by growing away from things and ideals, that we really grow. But in spite of fire and flood, the Church revived and stood upright upon her feet, the stronger for her temporary overthrow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Easter in St. Paul's: Sermons Bearing Chiefly on the Resurrection of Our Lord It ought perhaps to be added that the 35th Sermon was preached in St. Paul's, at the invitation of the late. Dean Milman, and at a date when the preacher had not become a member of the Chapter. If this volume should prove to be at all generally acceptable, the author might hereafter publish other Sermons preached during his Residences at St. Paul's since February, 1870, in the months of August and December. Of these, the latter would relate, for the most part, to our Lord's First and Second Coming. The former would deal with a wider range of subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Some Words of Christ With one exception, all the Sermons in this volume were preached in St. Paul's Cathedral, and nearly all were preached during Dr. Liddon's autumnal period of residence. They represent, therefore, a part of the teaching which, when no great festivals, no special season of the Christian year, controlled his choice of subjects, he prepared for a congregation whose wants and capacity he seemed to know with peculiar insight. And they illustrate, in their concentration of thought upon the Words of Christ, that characteristic of Tractarian theology which has been marked by Dean Church: "The great Name stood no longer for an abstract symbol of doctrine, but for a living Master, Who could teach as well as save. And not forgetting whither He had gone and what He was, the readers of Scripture now sought Him eagerly in those sacred records, where we can almost see and hear His going in and out among men." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Witness for Jesus: A Sermon Preached in Substance at St. Paul's Cathedral, at the Special Evening Service, on the Third Sunday After Easter, April 17, 1864 Jesus Christ our Lord defies this rule of human judgments, and the conscience of mankind justifies Him in defying it. He who could say to the men of His generation, Which of you convinceth: Me of sin? He who could dare to utter the tremendous words, I and the Father are One, could truly feel that it was im possible for Him to eclipse a higher greatness by drawing atten tion to Himself. His words were His own, His works were His own; as God He was the author and giver of the gifts which He received as man; and therefore He thought it not robbery to draw the eyes of men away from the miracles and words which flashed forth from Him, away from the sights and sounds which heralded a mighty presence, to Himself, the Worker, the Speaker, Who gave their greatness to the words which He spake, and to the works which He wrought. My brethren, the words of Jesus, which challenge witness, - attention, homage, reverence, love, to His personal Self, are only not intolerable because nothing less would have been adequate or true. Never, perhaps, has there been a congregation between whom and its pastors more mutual sympathy, and good-will, and kindness has sub sisted than amongst us, at S. Paul's. Meeting together daily in God's House, for common worship, partaking together continually of our Saviour's blessed Body and Blood, engaged in so many works of Christian charity, it was impossible that we should not be united together in heart and spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon, Occasioned by the Burning of the Steamer Lexington: Preached in St. Paul's Church, Boston These words of the Apostle drew special force from the times in which they were written. Those were times of persecution and distress to the infant church; times which gave loud admonition to Chris tians against entangling themselves in the pleasures, the business, or even the domestic relations of life, and were powerful in persuading them to a right estimate and use of all earthly things. What the Apostle wrote, he wrote under the pressure of present distress. The world had set itself against the church, and seemed determined to crush it in its very budding.
