Lewis, these sermons reveal the purpose of God's law to both proclaim God's holiness and righteousness and to make readers aware of their need for a Savior. (Practical Life)

Book excerpt: This book takes us behind prison bars--to hear powerful, simple, direct sermons by the man widely known as the twentieth century's most influential theologian. Originally delivered to inmates of the prison in Basel, Switzerland, these sermons shine with Karl Barth's thought and exaltation of the living Christ. Including sermons on the great feasts of the Christian year such as Christmas and Easter, Deliverance to the Captives offers new hope powerfully phrased, and a wide entry into the thought of a supreme theologian.

Book excerpt: Fr. Alfred Delp,S.J., was a heroic German Jesuit priest who was imprisoned and martyred by the Nazis in a Nazi death camp in 1945. At the time of his arrest, he was the Rector of St. Georg Church in Munich, and had a reputation for being a gripping, dynamic preacher, and one who was an outspoken critic of the Nazi regime. He was an important figure in the Resistance movement against Nazism. Accused of conspiring against the Nazi government, he was arrested in 1944, tortured, imprisoned, and executed on Feb 2, 1945. While in prison, Fr. Delp was able to write a few meditations found in this book, which also includes his powerful reflections from prison during the Advent season about the profound spiritual meaning and lessons of Advent, as well as his sermons he gave on the season of Advent at his parish in Munich. These meditations were smuggled out of Berlin and read by friends and parishioners of St. Georg in Munich. His approach to Advent, the season that prepares us for Christmas, is what Fr. Delp called an "Advent of the heart." More than just preparing us for Christmas, it is a spiritual program, a way of life. He proclaimed that our personal, social and historical circumstances, even suffering, offer us entry into the true Advent, our personal journey toward a meeting and dialogue with God. Indeed, his own life, and great sufferings, illustrated the true Advent he preached and wrote about. From his very prison cell he presented a timeless spiritual message, and in an extreme situation, his deep faith gave him the courage to draw closer to God, and to witness to the truth even at the cost of his own life. These meditations will challenge and inspire all Christians to embark upon that same spiritual journey toward union with God, a journey that will transform our lives. ?As one of the last witnesses who knew Fr. Alfred Delp personally, I am very pleased this book will make him better known in America. The more one reads his writings, the more one clearly recognizes the prophetic message for our times! Like his contemporary, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Delp ranks among the great prophets who endured the horror of Nazism and handed down a powerful message for our times.? Karl Kreuser, S.J., from the Foreword

Book excerpt: This second collection of sermons preached by Karl Barth in Basel prison won the same high praise as its predecessor, Deliverance to the Captives. In a mere twelve sermons much of Barth's greatness comes through, his faith, his heart and compassion', wrote the Times Literary Supplement, and the Church of England Newspaper remarked, We find revealed here the deep and pastoral concern which lies behind the theological genius of Barth'. Whether beginning from the Old Testament or the New, Barth has a unique gift of becoming a vehicle for conveying the majesty and the glory of God who is at the same time the God of mercy and loving-kindness.

Excerpt: ... m i _ sermon iv. on the influence of evil company. i Cor. xv. 33. Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners were there any inclined to question this Observation, which was proverbial even before the days of the Apostle, the unhappy circle, which appears around me, would too surely confirm its Truth. Society, which offers happiness to thousands, by mutual Intercourse of good Offices, abounds also also with innumerable dangers to those who know not, or are not willing, properly to apply its Gifts. All the sweet comforts of social life, the charms of friendship, and even of domestic bliss itself, instead of working together for good, produce, by an improper application of them, a dangerous and deadly jevil.' Thus from the sweetest flowers and fairest fruit, is extracted the most subtle and penetrating poison. Were I to apply separately to each of this Audience, and enquire--what was the first cause of their departure from Virtue?--1 douht not but I should be informed, that it arose from too great a fondness for Society, and the Influence of bad companions. Shrink not, my brethren, when I call to your remembrance those tempters, that have seduced you to sin, that-lured you by false promises from your peaceful homes, and have left you to to sigh out many a melancholy hour, either under the pangs of punishment, or in the gloomy confinement of a prison. Such recollections, tho they cannot be made without horror-, are yet salutary and proper. They trace the stream of Evil back to its source, and restore the Powers of the mind which were enervated by drinking these bitter waters. Some of you perhaps can recollect the time, when you lived soberly in your father's house, when your fond parents gave

Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
