Book excerpt: The Homilies were originally published in 1547, to help reform and renew the Church of England in the biblical faith of the Reformation. This series of sermons was written to enable often rather uneducated ministers, teach and explain the essence of the Christian faith from the pulpits of the land. They unfold the doctrines of scripture, sin, salvation, and Christian living with clarity and verve. This is what makes returning to the Homilies-now, for the first time, updated in modern English-such an invigorating and life-giving thing to do today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Father Bill Bausch's homilies are always outstanding. He brings a deep pastoral presence and much thought and preparation to each of them. This has never been more evident than here in this book of funeral homilies. Each is crafted to reflect the person remembered as well as the message of Scripture. Each reflects the communal nature of a Catholic funeral and is sensitive to the status of the mourners: non-Catholics, lapsed Catholics, faithful parishioners, relatives, and friends. Father Bill's words are faith-filled and compassionate, comforting and challenging, communal and personal. He regards the funeral liturgy as one of the greatest teachable moments the Church offers and here this is very evident. Highly recommended for all priests, deacons, and preachers. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two Books of Homilies, along with the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordinal, have long been basic documents of the Church of England, and are valuable in showing how Anglican doctrine shifted during the Reformation, as well as being of considerable historical importance. The first book, published in 1547, early in the reign of Edward VI, was partly, though not entirely, the work of Archbishop Thomas Cranmer, and the inspiration appears to have been his. This was intended to raise the standards of preaching by offering model ser mons covering particular doctrinal and pastoral themes, either to be read (particularly by unlicensed clergy) or to provide preachers with additional material for their own sermons. The success of the venture led Bishop EdmundBonner, who had contributed to Cranmer's book, to produce his own Book of Homilies in 1555, during the reign of Queen Mary. The Second Book of Homilies, published in 1563 (and in a revised form in 1571) appears in turn to have been influenced by both Cranmer's and Bonner's books. The present edition brings together all three books, edited and introduced by Revd Dr Gerald Bray.

Book excerpt: Sarah Edwards was the wife of America's greatest theologian, Jonathan Edwards. Her narrative took place in the year 1742. In it, she chronicled the grace of God in opening the eyes of her heart to receive an uncommonly clear sight of His love made manifest in Christ crucified. As she beheld Him in His beauty, she was melted into His image and transformed into His likeness. To use the words of Solomon, she was "lovesick." Her heart was lifted up to heaven to partake of the sweetest, most holy communion with God. She experienced a holy intercourse with God which she described as a constant flowing back and forth of love. Everything on earth seemed inconsequential, so long as she had Christ. The more she saw Him by faith, the more she saw her own sinfulness. She was grieved, humbled, and broken. Yet, at the same time, she abounded in joy, for the more she saw her own unworthiness, in contrast to His great worth, the more she could comprehend the breadth, length, height, and depth of His love in giving up of Himself for her. O the praise that involuntarily springs up at such sights! These sights were what God used to free her from sin, wean her from the world, and grace her to surrender to His providence, as well as to enable her to overflow with love for the brethren, to be full of concern for the lost, to be committed to His glory above all things.

Book excerpt: "This volume presents a revised Greek text and the first English translation of the seven complete homilies that have survived from the pen of Sophronios, the seventh-century patriarch of Jerusalem. The seven surviving sermons were composed for feast days over the course of the Church year. They vary in length, at least in their current form, from a brief three pages for the feast of Saints Peter and Paul to a rather massive thirty-five pages for the Annunciation. In addition to the evidence from two fragments, it is likely that he delivered other sermons during his patriarchate that have not come down to us"--

Book excerpt: Rabbi Jacobs, with sixty years' experience of pulpit work to his credit, provides a number of homilies for each weekly portion of the modern sermon and for the chapters of Ethics of the Fathers. The text for the modern sermon is usually the sidra, the weekly portion, or, in the summer months the Talmudic book known universally as Ethics of the Fathers. Among the sermonic themes are contemporary problems, the religious and ethical needs of the individual, and, of course, the impact of the Holocaust and the State of Israel.

They offer insights into an understanding of the Fall and redemption which are quite distinct from those developed in the West after St. Augustine. The sermons touch upon a range of moral issues such as compassion towards the poor, the role of prayer in family life and the place of the Christian in wider society which are as relevant now as then. - Publisher.

Book excerpt: Mark, the fifth volume in the series, is a study of the gospel of Mark, which is generally regarded as the first account of Jesus' life and work that was written. There is broad agreement that it was written by John Mark, one of the apostle Paul's companions and missionary helpers. The book puts particular focus on Jesus as the Son of God. It is thought that the book was written to encourage the believers in Rome during the times of the Emperor Nero's persecutions. The book includes sixty-two chapters, each of which began as a St. Andrew's sermon. Dr. Sproul deals with major themes as he moves through the book passage by passage. Though the book is an "expositional commentary"-that is, it does not deal with each and every verse-it unpacks key ideas in Dr. Sproul's easily understandable style. Readers will find invaluable insights into the goals Mark had in writing his gospel, the background for Jesus' time, and the meanings of some of Mark's most difficult passages.
