Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons and Discourses on Several Important Subjects in Divinity So great was his delight in his Master's Work, and so earnest his desire to be found occupied therein, when he should be called hence, that he preached two or three Sabbaths from a. Window in the manse to the people sitting without, after that he was no longer able to go to the kirk. And as the two Sabbaths, or three at most, in which he was, by his growing indisposition, laid aside from his public work, were very heavy upon him; so his Master was pleased to call him home on the Saturday, May 20, 1732, to celebrate the eternal Sabbath in that place where the inhabitant shall not say any more, I am sick. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on Several Subjects, Vol. 2 The works of every man proceed fiom his faith; and such as his faith is such will his life be. If he believe that his happiness 18 to proceed from the riches, honours, or pleasures of the world, it will be the endeavour of his life to obtain them. If his faith be in the world to come, and he should believe that the favour of God is that alone which can give him peace of conscience in this world, and happiness in the next, his life will be according to his faith; it will be passed in obedience to God, that he may obtain his favour. Works, then, are the fruit of faith, the ef feets which it produceth, and cannot be necessary for the information of God, who knoweth the state of our hearts without them, and will accept us as our heart is towards him. But they are necessary for us and tor the world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Themes for the Pulpit: Being a Collection of Nearly Three Thousand Topics With d104s, Suitable for Public Discourses in the Pulpit and Lecture Room As this book furnishes nothing but Subjects and d104s, it is believed that, without affording any temptation or even facilities for being indolent, it will Often be of essen tial service to the preacher, by suggesting interesting and' important trams of thought which he will carry out inde pendently, and which will be wholly his own. Some Of the greatest and happiest efforts of the human mind have owed their origin to a single thought suggested by another mind, or to a striking text of Scripture. The intellectual powers are frequently stimulated to vigorous action upon the mere announcement of an interesting and appropriate theme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures in Divinity, Vol. 2 With this impression of the importance Of the subject, I proceed to analyse the Opinions concerning the Person of Christ. I do not propose to follow the order Of time, because there is some difficulty in ascertaining the dates of particular opinions, because the order in which they arose is not always very material, and because the frequent revival'of 'old opinions in new systems would render a chronology of them full of repetitions. Neither do I propose to fatigue your attention with the useless uninteresting detail of all the extravagant conceits broached by particular men, or of the minute shades of difference among those who agreed in their general system. I Shall furnish you with the information that is'of - real importance, by bringing forward the three great systems upon this subject. Their features are strong ly marked and clearly discriminated, and they ap pear to comprehend all the variety Of which the subject admits, because the several opinions which have at some times been exploded and at other times revived, are always reducible to one or other Of these three systems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Body of Practical Divinity Sermons on the Shorter Catechism of the Westminster Assembly, Also Select Sermons on Various Subjects, Together With the Art of Divine Contentment, and Christ's Various Fulness These Catechetical Lectures of the late Reverend Thomas Watson, (all but one written with his own hand) I have read over, together with some Sermons annexed to them; and since my testimony is desired concerning them, I do hereby declare, that (though I will not undertake to justify every expression or sentence in them, or in any human writing) I find them, in the main, agreeable to the doctrinal articles of this Church, and unto the Westminster Assembly's Confession of Faith and Catechisms: and I believe, that through the blessing of God, they may be profitable into the edification of all that read them, with an honest desire to know and do the will of God; for certainly there are many excellent things in them, which, if they meet with a well-disposed, serious mind, are very apt to have a good effect upon it; and if it prove otherwise with any that happen to read this book, it will be their own fault more than the book's. Most writers have different styles; and it is well known that Mr Watson had one peculiar to himself, which yet hath found good acceptance with, and has been useful unto serious people; and I hope this (by reason of the great variety of excellent matter) may be more generally useful than any other thing he ever wrote. I little doubt but every sober Christian will be of this mind, after he has read his lectures on God's attributes, the ten commandments, Lord's prayer, &c. I sincerely profess, I have no other end in giving this testimony of this book, but thereby to serve the common good of Christ's church, and not the private interest of any person or party in the world: if my conscience did not bear me witness, that this book may be useful to that excellent end, no man should ever have prevailed with me, thus to prefix my testimony and name to it. That it may answer the main end for which it was at first written by the author, (whom I always took to be a grave, serious, modest, good man) and for which I hope, it is now published, to wit, the edification of the church of Christ in faith, holiness and comfort, is the hearty desire of one of the meanest servants of our most blessed Lord Jesus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Series of Discourses, on Fundamental Religious Subjects: Including a Preliminary Discourse on the Divine Revelation of the Holy Scriptures The only authority to which, in matters of religion, a well instruct ed Christian can implicitly defer, is that of the Holy Scriptures, as they are understood by himself. And, where the examination of their import has been careful, diligent, patient, and honest, though there may have been errors in the results obtained, those errors would never be of a kind to be fatal in the influence they should exert upon the course of the inquirer in the way of salvation. Satisfied that the only safe guide to religious truth, from first to last, is the revealed mind and will of God in the sacred Scriptures, I deemed it proper to prepare the way, for the series of Discourses, on fundamental religious subjects, which I was about to publish, by insertinga pre liminary Discourse, on the Divine Revelation of the Old and New Testament Scriptures. An apology is, perhaps, due, for the attempt to compress, within the limits of a single Discourse, (though of nu usual length, ) an argument, including so many points, and meeting so many and so various objections. I did think, however, that the gist of the argument could be presented within those limits and I made the attempt, with what success the reader must judge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divinity of Christ: Being the Substance of a Sermon, in Which This Most Important Subject Is Plainly Stated, and Clearly Proved, by Numerous Scriptural Citations, Rational Conclusions, and Quotations From the Ancient Fathers of the Christian Church As the mystery of unbelief does already work, not only as a secret ieaven. But with Open effrontery; to Oppose it in a proper manner, may not only be salutary but season able: and to neglect it, may not only be a deficiency Of duty, but a culpable deficiency. It is the positive duty of genuine Christians, not only to believe with the heart unto righteousness, but also to make confession with the mouth and pen, unto salvation. They are to be armed with the armour of righteousness, that they may contend for the faith delivered to the saints. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Preaching for Priests and People: Twenty-Five Short Sermons on Doctrinal and Historical Subjects With a Synopsis of Each Sermon The importance of this state of future being forms no portion of the present discourse. We know that for the spiritual part of our existence the whole work of the redemption was undertaken, and upon its eternal welfare is the entire energy of the Church expended. In all his troubles and afflictions the religious man consoles himself with the same con viction that lightened the trials of holy Job, and made even the pagan Roman poet cry out though for a different reason N on omnis moriar I shall not wholly die. But, however firm may be our belief in immortality, we must never forget that outside the domain of faith there exists, and has ever existed, a widespread area of doubt, and even negation, where the truths which we regard as the commonplaces of belief are looked Upon as nothing better than illusions and chimeras. The opposition which in the early ages spent itself in attacking the divinity of Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Those acquainted with his manner of preach ing will probably most readily feel how much of strength and of pathos his words lose when received through the medium of the printed page, without the aid of the singular fascination exerted by those oratori cal gifts to which Mr. Browning refers in the Intro duction following this Preface. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Life in Man: And Other Sermons Often as any soul comes under the regenerating power of the gospel and is born into the kingdom. This is what is brought out with an almost start ling distinctness in the group of passages standing at the head of this discourse. Man, like God, is per sonal and spiritual. He has the source of his being in God. He has come into life in virtue of the breath Of God in his soul. He has a certain intel lectual and moral likeness to God; and by cultivation and discipline this likeness may be advanced till his thought and will reflect, in some measure, the thought and will of God, and all his movements and desires are in the direction of God. He may yield his whole nature - all his powers and faculties - up to the guid ance of God, and the current of an exalted fellow ship may flow back and forth between his heart and the heart Of God. Having fallen out of this fellow ship, and lost this divine life, through sin, he may yet find it again through faith in the Son of God, who came into the world for the express purpose of renewing men dead in trespasses and sins, and re storing the marred image in which they were made. He may have inward witness that God is his Father, and that he is God's child. He may know and eh joy God. These are general statements covering the case. The further development of the subject will be pro moted best by asking two or three questions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on Various Subjects Relative to the Being and Attributes of God, and His Works in Creation, Providence, and Grace, Vol. 2 He to whom God says, I am thy God, in this peculiar sense, has reason for eternal exultation. And that He had shewn himself to be God, the good Being, to Israel, he adds which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. I need not here enter into the ancient history of the Israelites, and of their 430 years servitude in Egypt, where they were at all times ill used, and towards the latter part of their sojourning there, most cruelly oppressed; these things are well known. From that land, in which the true God was not acknowledged - where they had no means of grace, and no spiritual or intellectual advantage of any kind - out of this place of slavery, - this house of boncen, God, by a strong and mighty arm, redeemed them; and was now actually guiding them to a land where they were to eat bread without scarceness; where God alone should be their King - where they were to have the essence of civil liberty -and, with all other good things, the means of grace, and the hope of glory. All these were obligations of the highest kind, and reasons why they should receive His laws immediately from Himself; and take them for the regulators of their heart, and the rule of their conduct. There are two points of view under which this Law of God appears both singular and important. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
