Book Synopsis Anatomy of Foolishness by : Stephen Greenspan
Download or read book Anatomy of Foolishness written by Stephen Greenspan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-10-04 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just days after publishing his first book on the theory of foolishness, Stephen Greenspan learned that he had been hoodwinked by Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, or more accurately the Madoff “feeder” fund he invested in. Greenspan published a featured essay on the topic in the Wall Street Journal a few weeks later, and that essay was widely cited and attracted great interest for Greenspan’s ideas about gullibility and in the United States and many other countries. Greenspan’s new book, The Anatomy of Foolishness, explains why and how individuals (of all ages and levels of intelligence) and organizations act in ways that undermine their interests and even their continued existence. He examines three types of foolishness, using vivid examples to illustrate each, including the many foolish actions of US President Donald Trump. Greenspan presents a multidimensional theory of foolishness that contributes to the literature on human competence, and this book is likely to attract broad interest in the fields of psychology, sociology, economics, political science, and psychiatry as well as among those members of the general public (basically everyone) who have acted foolishly or know someone who has acted in a way that went against their own interests.

Book Synopsis Modern Occult Rhetoric by : Joshua Gunn
Download or read book Modern Occult Rhetoric written by Joshua Gunn and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2011-01-28 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broadly interdisciplinary study of the pervasive secrecy in America cultural, political, and religious discourse. The occult has traditionally been understood as the study of secrets of the practice of mysticism or magic. This book broadens our understanding of the occult by treating it as a rhetorical phenomenon tied to language and symbols and more central to American culture than is commonly assumed. Joshua Gunn approaches the occult as an idiom, examining the ways in which acts of textual criticism and interpretation are occultic in nature, as evident in practices as diverse as academic scholarship, Freemasonry, and television production. Gunn probes, for instance, the ways in which jargon employed by various social and professional groups creates barriers and fosters secrecy. From the theory wars of cultural studies to the Satanic Panic that swept the national mass media in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Gunn shows how the paradox of a hidden, buried, or secret meaning that cannot be expressed in language appears time and time again in Western culture. These recurrent patterns, Gunn argues, arise from a generalized, popular anxiety about language and its limitations. Ultimately, Modern Occult Rhetoric demonstrates the indissoluble relationship between language, secrecy, and publicity, and the centrality of suspicion in our daily lives.
Book Synopsis Difference in Philosophy of Religion by : Philip Goodchild
Download or read book Difference in Philosophy of Religion written by Philip Goodchild and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Can difference be subordinated to identity, simplicity or diversity? Or does it make a difference to the entire way in which we think? This book challenges the dominant agenda in the discipline of philosophy of religion by exploring issues of difference that have hitherto been obscured. It draws together some of the most innovative work in philosophical thinking about religion by some of the most creative and radical new thinkers in the field. Moving beyond debates between believers and skeptics, the contributors draw on critical theory to address differences in rationality, gender, tradition, culture and politics, showing how it is possible to think differently. Assumptions about rational neutrality, belief, tradition, experience and identity that undergird the rational exploration of classical theism are deconstructed. Instead it becomes important to explore a critical ethical reasoning, religious performance, internal religious tensions, location in culture, and a relation to exteriority as the groundwork for a future philosophy of religion. The challenging new directions for inquiry presented in this volume offer philosophers of religion, theologians, and critical and cultural theorists fresh insights into ways of addressing problems of religious difference.

Book Synopsis The Moral Fool by : Hans-Georg Moeller
Download or read book The Moral Fool written by Hans-Georg Moeller and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justice, equality, and righteousness these are some of our greatest moral convictions. Yet in times of social conflict, morals can become rigid, making religious war, ethnic cleansing, and political purges possible. Morality, therefore, can be viewed as pathology-a rhetorical, psychological, and social tool that is used and abused as a weapon. An expert on Eastern philosophies and social systems theory, Hans-Georg Moeller questions the perceived goodness of morality and those who claim morality is inherently positive. Critiquing the ethical "fanaticism" of Western moralists, such as Immanuel Kant, Lawrence Kohlberg, John Rawls, and the utilitarians, Moeller points to the absurd fundamentalisms and impracticable prescriptions arising from definitions of good. Instead he advances a theory of "moral foolishness," or moral asceticism, extracted from the "amoral" philosophers of East Asia and such thinkers as Ludwig Wittgenstein and Niklas Luhmann. The moral fool doesn't understand why ethics are necessarily good, and he isn't convinced that the moral perspective is always positive. In this way he is like most people, and Moeller defends this foolishness against ethical pathologies that support the death penalty, just wars, and even Jerry Springer's crude moral theater. Comparing and contrasting the religious philosophies of Christianity, Daoism, and Zen Buddhism, Moeller presents a persuasive argument in favor of amorality.

Download or read book 400 Year Old Room written by Meredith and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-02-20 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the lives of every creature on earth are echoes of events that occurred a long long time ago. Events of unimaginable scale and violent beauty that connect all living things, their every action and decision, their every heartbeat, to the greatest story ever told. This is a tale 13.8 billion years in the making that has seen billions of stars and billions of worlds live and die to create the only planet we know that is home to life. From the stardust that built us to the cosmic ingredients that sustain us and the starlight that powers it all, this is the story of a universe that birthed the Black child. Every cell in the Black child’s body is linked to an ancient stream of energy connecting their life to the heart of a star and the imagination of God. This unbroken stream of Black history span vast reaches of time and space and stretches back to the very first notion of humanity. The Black man’s sole focus, the thing driving his very existence, is hunger. We hunt no man. We hunt for energy. But not for ourselves. We are desperate to feed the hungry minds of the Black child. We want to feed them truth in the knowledge of themselves and where they fit in the history of time’s holy universe. This primal impulse stems from a deep connection we have to our purpose that extends beyond the ghettoes, beyond this country, to Africa. This is Black history. This is Black power. Black power is more abundant than ever. It’s just hiding in plain sight of a universal consciousness of the might and power of God. This book is mere meditation offering intellectual vitamins on critical race theory, the politics of racism and the hidden history behind the tug-o-war over the American story.

Book Synopsis Tales out of School by : Linda Marie Arbour
Download or read book Tales out of School written by Linda Marie Arbour and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales Out of School presents a memoir offering a critical examination of the culture that exists with with an analysis of the unconscious and theoretical dimensions of this psychological and sociological agenda. Author Linda Arbour reflects upon her experience as student, teacher, and administrator in the multi-racial, multi-ethnic, public secondary Catholic schools of Toronto, Ontario. Arbour insists that these schools exist to transmit the counter-cultural values of Jesus, values of equality and inclusion, where power is used to enhance the growth and flourishing of everyone, not merely to duplicate the secular norms of social upward mobility and individual status. Even so, as viewed through the lens of a newly recognized social Catholic tradition, she describes the cultural impasse she encountered while trying to realize these values. Within the structure of the Catholic school system, she discovered a morass of traditional male privilege and cronyism and a professional culture hostile to the flourishing of women as well as of teachers in general. She challenges future teachers and administrators to gain a heightened awareness in order to address these concerns within the context of the gospel by imagining a culture that emphasizes a concern for the most disciplined and talented students.

Download or read book Mentoring Lawyers written by James H. Fierberg and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are a skilled legal professional, you know incivility within the profession has reached epidemic proportions. James H. Fierberg spent almost forty years practicing law at the highest levels, and he suggests the profession can solve the problem by paying attention to something it has mostly ignored: mentoring lawyers. In fact, he argues that mentoring programs can help to elevate save the profession and also remove some of the world’s rampant toxicity. He answers questions such as: • How can firms urge an early and comprehensive mindful moral inventory of new attorneys? • What can firms do to help lawyers cultivate positive interpersonal skills and progress in the legal profession? • What can senior lawyers do to nurture a legacy for themselves, their firms, and their brands? Mindful mentors must not only commit to teaching mentees—they must encourage them to come to terms with exactly who they are, how they got to this point, and how they will establish themselves in the community of law moving forward.
