Book excerpt: This carefully edited collection has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all device. Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937) commonly known as H. C. McNeile or Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. McNeile's stories are either directly about the war, or contain people whose lives have been shaped by it. His war stories were considered by contemporary audiences as anti-sentimental, realistic depictions of the trenches, and as a "celebration of the qualities of the Old Contemptibles". McNeile's view, as expressed through his writing, was that war was a purposeful activity for the nation and for individuals, even if that purpose was later wasted: a "valuable chance at national renewal that had been squandered". The positive effects of war on the individual were outlined by McNeile, in The Lieutenant and Others and Sergeant Michael Cassidy, R.E, in which he wrote about "the qualities of leadership and selflessness essential to 'inspire' subalterns". His war stories include descriptions of fights between individuals that carry a sporting motif: in Sergeant Michael Cassidy, R.E., he writes, "To bag a man with a gun is one thing; there is sport—there is an element of one against one, like when the quality goes big game shooting. But to bag twenty men by a mine has not the same feeling at all, even if they are Germans" Content: Sergeant Michael Cassidy, R.E. Book excerpt: This eBook edition of "NO MAN'S LAND (A WW1 Saga)" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937) commonly known as H. C. McNeile or Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. His war stories were considered by contemporary audiences as anti-sentimental, realistic depictions of the trenches, and as a "celebration of the qualities of the Old Contemptibles". Extract: "It was from the top of the Rock that they watched their evil-smelling boat depart, to plug on northward up the home trail, unperturbed by naval battles or rumours thereof. And it was from the top of the Rock they first saw the smoke of the P. and O., outward bound, on which they were destined to complete the journey. Below lay the bay, dotted with German and Austrian ships caught on the high seas at the outbreak of war; a destroyer was going half-speed towards the Atlantic; a cruiser lay in dock, her funnels smoking placidly. "So long." The gunner subaltern waved a weary hand from his point of vantage, where he was inspecting life with a telescope. "There's your barge, but she won't leave till to-morrow. If this goes on for much longer, my nerves will give way under the strain. The excitement is too great."

Book excerpt: This early work by H. C. McNeile was originally published in 1916 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Michael Cassidy, Sergeant' is a collection of short stories that was written during the First World War and includes 'Three to One', 'The Spy', 'Mud and Noise', and many more. Cyril McNeile was born on 28th September 1888, in Bodmin, Cornwall. McNeile's writing career began in 1915 when the Daily Mail serialised Reminiscences of Sergeant Michael Cassidy. He wrote under the pseudonym "Sapper" due to British Army personnel being barred from publishing under their real names. McNeile's most famous creation was that of Bull-Dog Drummond in 1920. Drummond was an ex-army captain with a thirst for adventure and defeating bad guys.

Book excerpt: The following sketches were written about a period when "a contemptible little army" fell back from Mons on Paris, advanced north to the Aisne, and finally arrived in Belgium to fight the first battle of Ypres.Much water has flowed under the bridge since they were written: there are not many left of that original handful who crossed the water; and yet a second winter finds us in positions practically unchanged. True, the trenches have improved; the bombs are better; the guns more numerous. But the boredom and the mud, the cold and the fright, are just the same. The stories are not chronological, and, needless to say, portray no specific individual. All are founded on fact, sketched in with a framework of imagination. TABLE OF CONTENTSEpisode I. Three To OneEpisode II. A Fire In BilletsEpisode III. Medical InspectionEpisode IV.
