Book excerpt: Revised & updated version of The Omni-Directional Three-Dimensional Vectoring Paper Printed Omnibus for Bewitched Analysis a.k.a. The Bewitched History Book. For fifty years the beloved 1960s sitcom Bewitched has been enchanting television audiences. Created at a turbulent time in American history, Bewitched offered a brief respite from the worries of the day. Before now, there has never been a book written that ties in the events of the times with each episode. But more important, there has never been a book about the show which breaks down each episode in depth. There is now. Within these pages you will learn everything about America's favorite witch, Samantha Stephens, her dreary mortal husband, Durwood, er, Darrin, and the grand host of witches, warlocks, and marvelous mortals who accompanied them on their journey from newlyweds to the parents of a little witch and warlock of their own. Each of the 254 episodes are described in humorous detail and reviewed by one of the biggest fans of the show, David Pierce (otherwise known as Dr. Bombay), from the premiere Bewitched website www.harpiesbizarre.com, based on his popular "40 Years Ago..." weekly posts. Rare trivia and photos accompany the episodes as you learn which witch went which way along with what mortal madness materialized in the swinging 60s of suburbia! About the Author David Pierce should have gotten a Master's Degree in Bewitched, but, instead, got an Associates in Science, majoring in Commercial Art. He currently works as a customer service operations agent in the health care profession and lives in Holladay, Utah.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunting the hoyden... The Earl of Rushton is in need of a wife and Lady Serena requires a husband. This ought to be a simple arrangement. And yet...how is a man supposed to court his potential bride when he can't even find her? Rush always thought he'd marry for love like his parents, but love won't save his estate from ruin. And so here he is, playing a game of cat and mouse with the headstrong young lady who'd agreed to be his bride during one fateful sleigh ride. He ought to move on, find a lady who's not intent on leading him on a wild goose chase. And he would, except...he can't. Because the more he learns about his mysterious bride-to-be, the more he finds himself enchanted. Is it possible that a marriage of convenience could be something more? Possibly. But he'll have to catch her first. She's caught in a trap... Lady Serena didn't exactly lie when she'd told the Earl of Rushton she would marry him. She just hadn't thought it would ever come to pass. After all, everyone knew he was supposed to marry her sister. Even when that agreement fell through, she felt certain he would find some better alternative. He's looking for a proper countess, and no gentleman would wish for the free-spirited, irrepressible Maxwell sister for that role, even if her dowry is substantial enough to save his estate. But the kind, handsome earl is also surprisingly persistent. Not to mention cunning. A man determined to woo her with dancing and flowery praise, she could easily deflect. But when he offers to take her shooting and leaves her breathless with his kisses...it's not just her freedom she's in danger of losing. Now it's her heart on the line.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A desperate debutante... It’s all too much. At least that is how Lady Samantha feels as she slips out into the snow to build a snowman. With her first season bearing down on her, she’d give anything to have her mother’s guidance one last time. But certainly, it isn’t that prayer that sends the Marquess of Longley calling at that precise moment. Nor is it her wish that an avalanche of snow fall on the man’s stiff and serious head. But since he’s arrived, she might as well use him to help practice her charms before the official season begins. What’s the harm in that? A staunch marquess... She’s as vapid as she is beautiful. That’s Gavin’s official assessment of Lady Samantha. But even he can’t deny he’s tempted. From the clear blue of her eyes to the pure smile she flashes his way, he can’t help but wish he was the sort of man who could just marry the woman he wanted instead of worrying about what was best for his marquessate. Still, the moment he holds her in his arms during his first dance in years, he has to wonder… What would it be like to follow his heart? And as he pictures a future where he’s happy for the first time in what seems like forever, he has to ask himself. Should he pursue the woman that is slipping past his defenses or make the choice he knows is right? Because it can’t be possible that Lady Samantha is both. Can it?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Evil Twins of American Television examines evil-twin depictions in over fifty years of television, comparing male twins to female twins and male-writer depictions to female-writer depictions. Kristi Rowan Humphreys evaluates The Patty Duke Show, Bewitched, Gilligan’s Island, I Dream of Jeannie, and The Brady Bunch, among other television programs that use the twinning trope to explore themes of feminism and identity. Employing traits identified by Betty Friedan in The Feminine Mystique as belonging to the “evil” side of her “schizophrenic split” theory, Humphreys analyzes the ways in which these alter ego characters embody the desire for a separate self and independence through loose inhibitions, career interests, political interests, intellectual prowess, and assertiveness. This book then compares female-written twin episodes to male-written twin episodes, finding that when “evil twin” episodes are written by women writers, the twins are presented less as oppositional binaries and more as compatible, often symbiotic binaries. Thus, the women writers of these shows offer a compelling response to Friedan’s text, one that acknowledges and underscores the many complexities of women—the image of which cannot in reality be so easily split into two oppositional binaries. Humphreys then connects 1960s depictions to more current evil-twin examples, including those in Friends, Knight Rider, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Book excerpt: Parenting:Contemporary Clinical Perspectives offers fresh insights into treating parents and their children that highlight the evolving role of parents throughout the lifespan and amidst contemporary social pressure and change. By drawing from their own personal experiences as well as those from clinical practice, distinguished clinicians and analysts examine each phase of parenting through a variety of lenses to tackle our biggest parenting questions. While we must be highly present for our children to help them develop a sense of self-worth, we must simultaneously step back if we want them to develop a sense of autonomy and individuality. As our role as parent changes, how can we maintain a sense of grace, humor, and perspective? How can our work in practice inform and enrich our parenting, and vice versa? Thoughtful and engaging, this volume is a valuable resource for family therapists and clinicians, especially those who are parents themselves.

Book excerpt: As seen on the TODAY Show, The New York Times, People Magazine, Mind Body Green, and more “If you would like to live a more fulfilled life, Samantha Boardman has exactly what you need. Everyday Vitality is one part memoir, one part wisdom from years of experience as a psychiatrist, and one part cutting edge scientific evidence. Brilliant, warm, and best of all—an actionable guide to a life well-lived.” —Angela Duckworth, New York Times bestselling author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance Science-backed, research-driven, actionable strategies for countering stress and building your resilience “A great deal of everyday wellbeing lies beyond what is happening inside a person’s head. Everyday opportunities and activities that foster growth and build positive resources are not 'icing on the cake,' but the active ingredients of everyday resilience.” —Samantha Boardman, Everyday Vitality In Everyday Vitality, psychiatrist Dr. Samantha Boardman shows readers how to find strength within their stress and how to transform full days into more fulfilling days. Drawing from scientific research and her own clinical experience, she shares strategies for cultivating vitality—the positive feeling of aliveness and energy that lies at the core of well-being and at the heart of a good day. You will discover how increased vitality boosts productivity, builds coping skills, and enhances your ability to manage negative emotions. Dr. Boardman demonstrates how to override counterproductive responses to the onslaught of daily hassles and to respond with flexibility and fortitude instead of fear and rumination. Rather than disengaging from the world while you "find yourself," she shows you how to boost your vitality by living well within the world. As Dr. Boardman explains, the three main wellsprings of vitality are: meaningfully connecting with others; engaging in experiences that challenge you; and contributing to something beyond yourself. These activities foster resilience by boosting emotional stamina and generating uplifts—the counterparts to daily irritations and annoyances. Whether it is having a good conversation, doing a favor for someone, going for a walk, or reading an interesting article and then calling a friend to talk about it, commonplace experiences and micromoments serve as the building blocks of everyday resilience. Everyday Vitality explains how to identify them in your life, develop them, and use them as a foundation on which to thrive. Whether you are twenty or eighty, Everyday Vitality will give you the tools you need to get the most out of each day and to live your life to the fullest.
