Book Synopsis Lovers and Others by : Tom Lowenstein
Download or read book Lovers and Others written by Tom Lowenstein and published by Melbourne Books. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This candidly written memoir, enlivened by the author's impish sense of humour, narrates the way in which, by chance and circumstance, Tom Lowenstein placed his career at the service of the Australian art world. The book describes Lowenstein's numerous David and Goliath battles with the Australian Government and the Australian Tax Office for a greater understanding and fairer treatment of the unique set of circumstances and numerous challenges faced by the country's creative sectors. Lowenstein's interactions with his colourful and gregarious clients took him frequently out of the comfort of the corporate environment into the artists' homes and studios. The personalities of Charles Blackman, Colin Lanceley, Margaret Olley, John Olsen, Garry Shead, Tim Storrier, and many other luminaries of the art world are vividly brought out with unique insights and unexpected angles. The book is richly illustrated with photographs from Lowenstein's personal archives documenting his long-standing friendships and reflecting its heady mixture of accounting, art, and wine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With audacious dexterity, David Howes weaves together topics ranging from love and beauty magic in Papua New Guinea to nasal repression in Freudian psychology and from the erasure and recovery of the senses in contemporary ethnography to the specter of the body in Marx. Through this eclectic and penetrating exploration of the relationship between sensory experience and cultural expression, Sensual Relations contests the conventional exclusion of sensuality from intellectual inquiry and reclaims sensation as a fundamental domain of social theory. David Howes is Professor of Anthropology, Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec.

Book Synopsis A Doctor Across Borders by : Alexander Cameron-Smith
Download or read book A Doctor Across Borders written by Alexander Cameron-Smith and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his day, Raphael Cilento was one of the most prominent and controversial figures in Australian medicine. As a senior medical officer in the Commonwealth and Queensland governments, he was an active participant in public health reform during the inter-war years and is best known for his vocal engagement with public discourse on the relationship between hygiene, race and Australian nationhood. Yet Cilento’s work on tropical hygiene and social welfare ranged beyond Australia, especially when he served as a colonial medical officer in British Malaya and in the Mandated Territory of New Guinea. He also worked with the League of Nations Health Organization in the Pacific Islands and oversaw international social welfare programs for the United Nations. On one level, this professional mobility allowed ideas and practices of public health and government to circulate between colonial spaces of northern Australia, the Pacific Islands and Asia. On another, it meant that Cilento’s Pacific colonialism and colonial experience shaped his understanding of Australian national health and welfare. Rather than attempt a comprehensive biography of Cilento, this book instead uses this border-crossing career as a means to explore several material and discursive facets of Australia’s relationships to the Pacific and the world.
Book Synopsis The Yellow Lady by : Alison Broinowski
Download or read book The Yellow Lady written by Alison Broinowski and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yellow Lady is the first major critique of Australian impressions of Asia. Alison Broinowski argues that Australians have been backward in developing an appropriate image of themselves because of their ignorance of and ambivalence towards Asians. She traces the history of Australian ideas about Asia and the Pacific from pre-colonial time to the present, and concludes that some of these perceptions, no matter how irrational or archaic, continue to underlie the political and economic decisions Australians make about the Asia-Pacific region. No one has ever looked so exhaustively at Australian images of Asia. Alison Broinowski, a longtime diplomat and writer about Asian issues, identifies these images, where they come from, and how they have changed or not changed. She investigates artists who took an interest in Asia and why they did so. They include visual artists, novelists, film-makers, composers, architects, poets, potters, playwrights, photographers, puppeteers and choreographers. Japan receives the greatest attention as a continuing source of both modernity and tradition. Beginning with early Aboriginal contact with Indonesians, The Yellow Lady shows how chances for harmonious co-existence with the neighbourhood were lost in the colonial period. Successive wars set back this process of adaptation. In the final section, as increasing numbers of Asians migrate to Australia and Asian countries become economically dominant, Australian images of Asia undergo rapid change. Alison Broinowski argues that until Asia is accepted as part of the mainstream of Australian life, Australians will remain uncertain about their status, and that, if Australia's international image is to change, itmust begin by acknowledging the reality of Asia.
Book Synopsis Hunting the Gatherers by : Michael O'Hanlon
Download or read book Hunting the Gatherers written by Michael O'Hanlon and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2001-01-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the 1870s and the 1930s competing European powers carved out and consolidated colonies in Melanesia, the most culturally diverse region of the world. As part of this process, great assemblages of ethnographic artefacts were made by a range of collectors whose diversity is captured in this volume. The contributors to this tightly-integrated volume take these collectors, and the collecting institutions, as the departure point for accounts that look back at the artefact-producing societies and their interaction with the collectors, but also forward to the fate of the collections in metropolitan museums, as the artefacts have been variously exhibited, neglected, re-conceived as indigenous heritage, or repatriated. In doing this, the contributors raise issues of current interest in anthropology, Pacific history, art history, museology, and material culture.
