Book excerpt: Sentiments and Activities represents a dialogue between the data of social science and certain kinds of general ideas. The papers have three main subject areas: history and social structure; anthropology and function; and small groups, theories, and methods. Homans arguments have stood the test of time, and stand as examples of the creative use of social science concepts across disciplinary boundaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can Japanese popular culture gain numerous fans in China, despite pervasive anti-Japanese sentiment? How is it that there’s such a strong anti-Korean sentiment in Chinese online fan communities when the official Sino-Korean relationship is quite stable before 2016? Avid fans in China are raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to make gifts to their idols in foreign countries. Tabloid reports on Japanese and Korean celebrities have been known to trigger nationalist protests in China. So, what is the relationship between Chinese fandom of Japanese and Korean popular culture and nationalist sentiment among Chinese youth? Chen discusses how Chinese fans of Japanese and Korean popular culture have formed their own nationalistic discourse since the 1990s. She argues that, as nationalism is constructed from various entangled ideologies, narratives, myths and collective memories, popular culture simply becomes another resource for the construction of nationalism. Fans thus actively select, interpret and reproduce the content of cultural products to suit their own ends. Unlike existing works, which focus on the content of transnational cultural flows in East Asia, this book focuses on the reception and interpretation of the Chinese audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sentiments and Activities: Essays in Social Science My very entrance into sociology was a matter of chance; or rather, I got into sociology because I had nothing better to do. I graduated from Harvard College in June, 1932, having concentrated academically in English literature and nonacademically in writing verse. In line with my literary interests I had decided to make myself a newspaperman. I was quite wrong; literary ability is the last thing a newspaperman needs to get ahead. But I was saved from the consequences of deliberate decision. Although I had gotten myself a job beginning in the fall with William Allen White of the Emporia, Kansas, Gazette, the Depression was still getting worse, and when the time came for me to go to Em poria, White wired me that the circulation of the Gazette had gone down so much that he would have to withdraw his ofier of a job. This made me, like so many others at the time, unemployed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This Second Edition contains key themes with all new contributors and is a completely separate work from the first. Emotion in Organization presents original work from leading scholars in the field, they engage with emotion as a qualitative phenomenon which shapes and is shaped by organizational life. Examining how emotion cannot be simply separated from thinking, judgment, decision-making and other so-called rational organizational processes, the book challenges us to build a passionate theory of organizations. The introduction reviews the expansion of organizational emotion studies and their appeal to several social-scientific disciplines. Divided into four parts, the book reveals through stories, interview
