Book excerpt: The effects of heavy steel confinement on the shock sensitivity of pressed solid high explosives heated to temperatures close to thermal explosion conditions were quantitatively measured. Cylindrical flyer plates accelerated by a 101 mm diameter gas gun impacted preheated explosive charges containing multiple embedded manganin pressure gauges. The high explosive compositions tested were LX-04-01 (85 wt.% HMX and 15 wt.% Viton A) heated to 170 ° C and LX-17 (92.5 wt.% TATB and 7.5 wt.% Kel-F) heated to 250 ° C. Ignition and Growth reactive flow models for heated, heavily confined LX-04-01 and LX-17 were formulated based on the measured pressure histories. LX-17 at 250 ° C is considerably less shock sensitive when confined by steel than when confined by aluminum or unconfined. LX-04-01 at 170 ° C is only slightly less shock sensitive when confined by steel than when it is unconfined. The confinement effect is smaller in LX-04-01, because HMX particle growth i s much less than that of TATB.

A large number of various physical parameters have to be determined ex perimentally in order to test or characterise an explosive. Various physical principles have been applied for such measurements. Accordingly, a large number of different experimental methods exist, as well as various testing appa ratuses and procedures. On the other hand, great progress has been made recently in the study of detonation phenomena. New measuring techniques can assess extremely short processes to below nanoseconds scale. They make it possible to determine im portant parameters in detonation physics. I have made a great attempt to cover the available literature data on the subject. Because it would be a highly demanding task to include in a single volume all the methods that are in use by various testing agencies, I have tried to give primarily the principles for determination of individual physical pa rameters of explosives by different measuring methods as well as data treatment procedures.

The ultimate objective is to determine, by means of the calculations, how to modify the explosive so that it still retains all of its explosive power but becomes less sensitive to shock. These less sensitive but equally powerful explosives would reduce the number of accidents that occur among personnel involved in handling, storing, transporting, and using the explosives. The detonation process is complicated and involves many factors, including hot spots, propagation of acoustic or detonation waves, interaction (or scattering) between detonation waves and explosive molecules, etc. However, the key factor in an explosive's sensitivity to shock is the activation energy of the molecules that make up the explosive. When an explosive receives a shock, the energy of the molecules contained in the explosive is increased. In the region of the shock, if the energy of a sufficient number of molecules is raised above the activation energy, then the detonation begins.

The correlation between the temperature at which a solid organic explosive reacts in 250 microsec and the materials impact sensitivity was extended and supported by new experimental data. The thermal sensitivities of a number of energetic mixtures were determined and interpreted on the basis of the kinetics and heat output of the initiating decomposition reaction. A scale of thermal sensitivities for liquid explosives and propellants was established and considered on the basis of current understanding of the sensitivity of liquids. Although the thermal sensitivity results generally do not agree with the results of accepted sensitivity tests, it is recommended that thermal sensitivities be run on newly synthesized, energetic liquids. The meaning of the thermal sensitivity results in terms of Arrhenius parameters governing the initial stage of the explosive decomposition reaction is considered briefly.
