Organizations put in place loose and flexible structures to be responsive to emerging opportunities and challenges and to encourage and manage organizational and industry changes. New organizations may be especially likely to adopt unorthodox or intentionally ambiguous structures to set themselves apart and address problems that motivate their founding and diversify their structures. Research in turn needs to understand how organizational members accommodate uncertain and shifting organizational structures by negotiating the personal, professional, and organizational aspects of their identity through communicative sensemaking. I contribute to the study of organizational identity and sensemaking processes through a qualitative case study that explores how individuals construct their identity in the absence of conventional sensegiving artifacts. Discursively vague job titles, indefinite and inapplicable job descriptions, and unclear and ambiguous organizational structures prompt continuous sensemaking. Analysis of interview data and field notes uncovered alternate schemas and resulting work practices individuals engage in as they negotiate their organizational identity to cope with uncertainty and ambiguity

Drawing on a broad set of methods and theory from complex cognitive systems engineering and visualization research, this dissertation delves into the cognitive work demanded by this domain and explores visual analytics solutions to enhance sensemaking.In a study using a variety of methods including interviews, observational research, and situated-recall, this research identifies and characterizes the issues of ambiguity in avalanche forecasting as they pertain to individual and collaborative sensemaking around data. It presents the results of a participatory design study that develops visualization tools to tackle these challenges and an evaluation study investigating the analytic affordances and sensemaking support provided by newly designed and existing tools used by forecasters. In addition, a preliminary study using participatory design and diary study methods investigates how knowledge construction and synthesis can be supported to better address challenges of shared sensemaking in asynchronous sequential collaboration. Findings from this dissertation reveal the shortcomings of conventional visualization guidelines in being able to tackle ambiguity in this complex domain. Instead of employing efficient and effective perceptual encodings and summary overviews, it highlights the significance of flatter visual hierarchies, visual difficulty, and rapid access to details for better support of sensemaking around ambiguity. In addition, it reveals new challenges and opportunities for improved knowledge synthesis support in visual analytics tools. The theoretical framing and methodological approach used in this dissertation is novel for the domain of visual analytics.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the ambiguity created by the continuous reconfiguration of a business model change initiative, the sensemaking perspective (Weick 1995, 2005) of organizational leaders in response to that ambiguity, and any unintended outcomes resulting from those sensemaking activities. To accomplish these research objectives, a single case study was conducted with a small technology firm during a period of intense and continuous reconfiguration of its business model in response to market feedback collected from a series of industry trade shows. Data collection included interview data, office documents related to the change effort, bi-weekly information requests, and public communications including website descriptions and press releases. The data yielded descriptions of ambiguity created by the continuous reconfiguration of the business model change effort, of the sensemaking activities undertake by leadership in the face of ambiguity, and of the unintended change outcomes traceable to the leaders senesemaking. The data contributed to the researchers findings that the continuous reconfiguration of the organizational change effort does contribute to ambiguity, and that such ambiguity did have an effect on the implementation of the change, leading to some unintended outcomes. These findings are relevant to business model change literature which recommends continuous reconfiguration as a means of dealing with rapidly changing markets, and will be useful to workforce education and development researchers and practitioners in broadening their understanding of organization change in relevant contexts.
