This study sought to examine alcohol use, sensation seeking, and gender differences in the experience of severe alcohol-related consequences amongst entering college students. Participants included 953 entering freshmen at a Bay Area university who self-identified as 18 years of age or older, had recent experience of drinking alcohol, and who completed the survey during their first academic quarter. Data for this study was collected during the fall follow-up time point of the larger study, which occurred in the beginning weeks of November in each academic year. Participants were asked to complete brief questionnaires regarding demographics, alcohol use over the previous three months, alcohol-related consequences, and they also completed the Brief Sensation Seeking Scale (BSSS). Simple regressions were used to examine the relationships between overall alcohol use (as measured by the Quantity Frequency Index [QFI]), the number of different alcohol-related problems, and sensation seeking tendencies (as measured by the BSSS). Using procedures outlined by Baron and Kenny (1986), a mediational path analysis was implemented to assess the effect of sensation seeking on the relationship between QFI and alcohol-related problems. MANCOVA tests were used to assess the role of gender differences on sensation seeking and a specific set of alcohol-related problems (i.e. Sexual, Physiological, Legal, Social, and Academic). Results show that sensation seeking represents a weak mediator in the overall relationship of QFI and alcohol-related problems among this sample. Even when breaking the sample down between men- and women-only subsamples, sensation seeking appears to possess, at best, a slight mediating effect on the relationship between OFI and problems for men. Results also indicate that there were no significant differences in overall number of problems experienced between genders, however, women reported--to a significant degree--more Sexual and Physiological problems as compared to their male peers. Males, on the other hand, endorsed significantly more problems in Social and Academic functioning as a result of their alcohol use. This data suggests that high sensation seeking may not represent a significant of a predictor of alcohol-related consequences, which is contrary to much of the current literature. Furthermore, this study further evidences that men and women experience significantly different alcohol-related consequences. College drinking prevention and intervention programs should therefore consider that there are differences in the ways that their male and female students experience alcohol use and its related consequences.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Sensation seeking is a personality characteristic associated with problematic alcohol use and positive alcohol expectancies, but little research has examined the relationship between sensation seeking and the acquisition of alcohol expectancy information. In a recent study (Steinberg, 2003), sensation seeking was associated with how quickly and accurately college-aged students were able to learn alcohol-expectancy word pairs in a paired associate learning task. In this age group, however, the individuals had fully developed alcohol expectancies that may have influenced their rates of learning. The current study sought to minimize the influence of previously held alcohol expectancies by exploring this relationship in children when the development of alcohol expectancies is just beginning. The participants in this study were fifth grade students. A series of regressions examined the relationship between sensation seeking, alcohol expectancies, current and predicted future drinking with the acquisition of alcohol and expectancy word pairs in a paired associate learning task. Although no statistically significant relationships were found, children with higher drinking frequency and males with higher Thrill and Adventure Seeking (TAS) demonstrated a minor advantage in their ability to match alcohol and expectancy words in cued-recall trials. Although the results of this study are inconclusive, they suggest that sensation seeking may play a role in the acquisition of alcohol expectancies. Future research with refined word pairs and a larger sample size is necessary to further clarify these trends.

According to the Core Institute (2012), nearly 44% of college students reported heavy episodic drinking during the previous two weeks. Alcohol use results in numerous problems experienced by college students, including impaired driving and death (Hingson, Zha, & Weitzman, 2009). In response, there has been a call within the literature to develop theoretically derived mediation models to investigate the complex array of variables that influence collegiate drinking behaviors (Baer, 2002; Oei & Morawska, 2004). By examining the multiple pathways of alcohol use, tailored interventions can be designed that target appropriate contributing factors for high-risk drinking groups (Dowdall & Wechsler, 2002). The purpose of this study was to test a model of collegiate drinking comprised of several key determinants of alcohol use: descriptive norms, injunctive norms, positive alcohol outcome expectancies, negative alcohol outcome expectancies, and four types of drinking motives (coping, conformity, social reinforcement, and enhancement). The motivational model of alcohol use (Cox & Klinger, 1988, 2011) was used as a framework for conceptualizing the unique role that each variable played in contributing to drinking outcome variables (alcohol use intensity and alcohol-related negative consequences). It was posited that drinking motives would fully mediate the associations between psychosocial determinants of drinking (social norms and alcohol outcome expectancies) and drinking outcome variables. Path analysis was utilized to examine associations among the variables and to assess the fit of the hypothesized model with a sample of 445 full-time undergraduates between the ages of 18 and 24 years old. A final, revised model accounted for 45% of the variance in both alcohol use intensity and alcohol-related negative consequences. Whereas enhancement drinking motives and social norms variables emerged as important predictors of alcohol use intensity, negative drinking motives acted as key predictors of alcohol-related negative consequences. Results of bootstrapping analyses indicated that drinking motives significantly mediated the indirect relationships between several psychosocial determinants and drinking outcome variables. Multiple group tests of invariance indicated that the revised model was an acceptable fit among male and female students as well as underclassmen and upperclassmen. Several implications for counselors and counselor educators were gleaned from the results. In the future, researchers should design and evaluate targeted interventions that are tailored for college drinkers based on their primary motives for alcohol consumption."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Posturography, a technique that can be used to quantify adaptive mechanisms involved in posture and balance, was used in evaluating expectancy effects on postural sway because it is sensitive to cognitive processing demands. Drawing from the cognitive-processing approach of alcohol expectancy, this study investigates how expectations of alcohol implicitly influence psychomotor movement while viewing an alcohol advertisement prime. At session one, 251 male and female undergraduates were assessed using the Brief Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire - Social/Physical and Pleasurable scales [AEQ (Brown, Goldman, Inn, & Anderson, 1980)] and a variety of other self-report instruments. At session two, participants were randomly assigned to an advertisement condition. Participants in the experimental condition were exposed to either alcohol-related print advertisements depicting people drinking in social situations or ads containing the alcohol product alone. The control condition viewed nonalcohol-related advertisements. Participants viewed the advertisements on a large screen TV as they stood relaxed on a force plate, after which their craving levels were assessed through self-report. The results showed no significant relationship between alcohol expectancies and postural sway. Book excerpt: Levels of heavy episodic drinking peak during emerging adulthood and contribute to the experience of negative consequences. Previous research has identified a number of trait-like personality characteristics that are associated with drinking. Studies of the Acquired Preparedness Model have supported positive expectancies, and to a lesser extent negative expectancies, as mediators of the relation between trait-like characteristics and alcohol outcomes. However, expectancies measured via self-report may reflect differences in learned expectancies in spite of similar alcohol-related responses, or they may reflect true individual differences in subjective responses to alcohol. The current study addressed this gap in the literature by assessing the relative roles of expectancies and subjective response as mediators within the APM in a sample of 236 emerging adults (74.7% male) participating in a placebo-controlled alcohol challenge study. The study tested four mediation models collapsed across beverage condition as well as eight separate mediation models with four models (2 beverage by 2 expectancy/subjective response) for each outcome (alcohol use and alcohol-related problems). Consistent with previous studies, SS was positively associated with alcohol outcomes in models collapsed across beverage condition. SS was also associated with positive subjective response in collapsed models and in the alcohol models. The hypothesized negative relation between SS and sedation was not significant. In contrast to previous studies, neither stimulation nor sedation predicted either weekly drinking or alcohol-related problems. While stimulation and alcohol use appeared to have a positive and significant association, this relation did not hold when controlling for SS, suggesting that SS and stimulation account for shared variability in drinking behavior. Failure to find this association in the placebo group suggests that, while explicit positive expectancies are related to alcohol use after controlling for levels of sensation seeking, implicit expectancies (at least as assessed by a placebo manipulation) are not. That the relation between SS and stimulation held only in the alcohol condition in analyses separate by beverage condition indicates that sensation seeking is a significant predictor of positive subjective response to alcohol (stimulation), potentially above and beyond expectancies.

To date, most research has focused on the mediating effects of motives to drink, rather than expectancies of drinking, on the relation between personality and alcohol use. The current study examined the mediating effects of both alcohol expectancies and motives on the relation between personality and alcohol use, specifically looking at the strength of these mediating variables in a sample of full-time college students. Two-hundred and seventy five undergraduate students completed an online questionnaire assessing personality (extraversion and neuroticism), alcohol expectancies (positive and negative), drinking motives (enhancement, coping, and social), and patterns of alcohol use (frequency and intensity). Results found small-to-moderate relations among study variables, with limited mediating effects of expectancies and motives.
