Book excerpt: Jung and Intuition examines for the first time the twelve categories of intuition described in both the works of C. G. Jung and the post-Jungians. Nowhere, other than in Jung's own work, has intuition been more fully treated. Each form of intuition is critically explained in the historical context of its appearance and located in one of the four spheres of Jung's psychology: the unconscious, the subconscious (Unterbewusste, consciousness, and Jungian and post-Jungian practice. This work brings Jung's entire psychology in all its depth from 1896 to its contemporary use into greater clarity for both professionals and lay readers. The author persuasively shows that intuition is at the heart of Jung's psychology. It is central to his concept of the archetypes as well as to his understanding of the subconscious and the active imagination. It also involves both clinical and philosophical approaches, as powerfully demonstrated by his pioneering work at the Burgholzli Klinik in Zurich.

Finally, the scientific mind gathers up all such credible conceptions, branching out in all directions of space and time, and formulates them in general laws. Every one of these universal propositions stands for an indefinite number of anticipations. Of these some are simple and positive: that is, point to events we really count upon witnessing for ourselves. The greater number, however, are complex and conditional: that is, rest on a supposition of certain experiences which we either regard as probable at some future day, or can imagine ourselves as undergoing or having undergone at any conceivable point of time.* The number of our own actual experiences of the given fact may be small enough; and yet we do not hesitate to cast ourselves, in thought, at least, if not in(action, on this indefinitely wide range of conceivable experiences. We have now ceased to draw our crude childish inferences of a world revolving about us like some painted cylinder, with all its different pictures occurring in exactly the same order, and have expanded our field of vision to a world with no clearly marked limits in space or time, a vast painted canvas for ever moving onwards before the eye, in which at first sight nothing but most intricate and unlike groupings of coloured forms are discoverable, subtly woven lines that intersect in ever fresh arabesque forms, but in which the measuring eye of the geometer discovers unfailing uniformities of relation, resolving every picturesque complexity into a modified combination of a few elementary lines and surfaces.f In this way, then, it seems possible to connect the definite beliefs of maturity with those wild impulses to realize an idea as actual sensation which I have regarded as the germinal form of all...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is intuition? What constitutes an intuitive process? Why are intuition concepts important? After many years of scholarly neglect, interest in intuition is now exploding in psychology and cognitive science. Moreover, intuition is also enjoying a renaissance in philosophy. Yet no single definition of intuition appears in contemporary scholarship; there is no consensus on the meaning of this concept in any discipline. Rational Intuition focuses on conceptions of intuition in relation to rational processes. Covering a broad range of historical and contemporary contexts, prominent philosophers, psychologists, and cognitive scientists explore how intuition is implicated in rational activity in its diverse forms. In bringing the philosophical history of intuition into novel dialogue with contemporary philosophical and empirical research, Lisa M. Osbeck and Barbara S. Held invite a comparison of the conceptions and functions of intuition, thereby clarifying and advancing conceptual analysis across disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book encapsulates John Beebe’s influential work on the analytical psychology of consciousness. Building on C. G. Jung’s theory of psychological types and on subsequent clarifications by Marie-Louise von Franz and Isabel Briggs Myers, Beebe demonstrates the bond between the eight types of consciousness Jung named and the archetypal complexes that impart energy and purpose to our emotions, fantasies, and dreams. For this collection, Beebe has revised and updated his most influential and significant previously published papers and has introduced, in a brand new chapter, a surprising theory of type and culture. Beebe’s model enables readers to take what they already know about psychological types and apply it to depth psychology. The insights contained in the fifteen chapters of this book will be especially valuable for Jungian psychotherapists, post-Jungian academics and scholars, psychological type practitioners, and type enthusiasts.

She became psychic in mid-life after years of intensive study and training, and is now a believer that everyone has the potential to tap into their intuition and understand the world at a deeper level. Psychic Intuition bridges the gap between skeptics who can analyze but don’t experience psychic phenomena, and believers who have the experiences but lack the ability to analyze. This book explains, for the first time, how psychic ability works in the brain.

Book excerpt: The field of Jungian psychology has been growing steadily over the last twenty years and awareness is increasing of its relevance to the predicaments of modern life. Jung appeals not only to professionals who are looking for a more humane and creative way of working with their clients, but also to academics in an increasingly wide range of disciplines. This Handbook is unique in presenting a clear, comprehensive and systematic exposition of the central tenets of Jung’s work which has something to offer to both specialists and those seeking an introduction to the subject. Internationally recognised experts in Jungian Psychology cover the central themes in three sections: Theory, Psychotherapy & Applications. Each chapter begins with an introduction locating the topic in the context of Jung’s work as a whole, before moving on to an investigation of contemporary developments and concluding by demonstrating how Jung’s theories continue to evolve and develop through their practical therapeutic applications. The Handbook of Jungian Psychology is the definitive source of authoritative information on Jungian psychology for Jungian analysts, psychotherapists, counsellors and related professionals. It will be an invaluable aid to those involved in Jungian academic studies and related disciplines.
