Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No two nations in the world are as integrated, economically and socially, as are the United States and Canada. We share geography, values and the largest unprotected border in the world. Regardless of this close friendship, our two countries are on a slow-motion collision course—with each other and with the rest of the world. While we wrestle with internal political gridlock and fiscal challenges and clash over border problems, the economies of the larger world change and flourish. Emerging economies sailed through the meltdown of 2008. The International Monetary Fund forecasts that by 2018, China's economy will be bigger than that of the United States; when combined with India, Japan and the four Asian Tigers—South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong--China's economy will be bigger than that of the G8 (minus Japan). Rather than continuing on this road to mutual decline, our two nations should chart a new course. Bestselling author Diane Francis proposes a simple and obvious solution: What if the United States and Canada merged into one country? The most audacious initiative since the Louisiana Purchase would solve the biggest problems each country expects to face: the U.S.'s national security threats and declining living standards; and Canada's difficulty controlling and developing its huge land mass stemming from a lack of capital, workers, technology and military might. Merger of the Century builds both a strong political argument and a compelling business case, treating our two countries not only as sovereign entities but as merging companies. We stand on the cusp of a new world order. Together, by marshalling resources and combining efforts, Canada and America have a greater chance of succeeding. As separate nations, the future is in much greater doubt indeed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh Annual Seminar of Canadian-American relations held at the University of Windsor brought together a number of distinguished participants, representing such interested groups as labour, business, and research, to discuss planning. The result is this volume which brings together some of the contributors to discuss this important and controversial area of Canadian-American relations. The noted economist Harry G. Johnson begins by defining planning in the Canadian-American context as "the general process of attempting to take stock of the present situation and its evolving trends, predict the general direction of future developments, assess these in the light of generally accepted social and economic goals, and where necessary formulate programs and policies designed to shape future developments as closely as possible to conform to what is considered to be in the social interest." He then identifies several promising areas for joint planning, including the liberalization of trade, the use of energy, the use of water resources, and the organization of transportation. Subsequent papers on official and business planning echo the approach outlined in Dr. Johnson's definition, and stress the need for vision based on discernment of where we are and where we are going. These discussions are grouped into the categories Business, Labour, New Areas of Co-operation, Automation, and Technical Change. Finally, Paul Ylvisaker, Director of the Public Affairs Program for the Ford Foundation in New York, under the title "The Human Price of Planning" adds a cogent warning that this future focus, however skilfully it is related to present knowledge, may not be enough, pointing to recent events in the University of California at Berkeley and in Watts, California, as an indication of the importance of being prepared for and receptive to the immediate and unexpected. He suggests that planning for the cities of the future should be the most important concern for Canadian and American planners. By bringing together a variety of viewpoints on some of the most relevant aspects of planning for the future this volume will provoke lively discussion, and provide a useful reference, for all those who will take part in planning for the future, and those who will be affected by it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined efforts of the World Peace Foundation, the C. D. Howe Research Institute, and the Centre Québécois de Relations Internationales have culminated in a comprehensive three-volume study of critical U.S.-Canadian resource issues. Motivated initially by the tensions of the mid-1970s and by U.S. concern about the actions of its major non-energy resource supplier, Canada, the study grew to examine bilateral resource issues from a long-term perspective. The first volume traces the background of the U.S.-Canadian resource connection, analyzes the evolution of resource policies and processes in the two countries, and introduces the domestic and bilateral policy issues that have emerged regarding natural resource development and trade. Contributors examine the possibility that Canada might seek to exploit its resource position by taking actions detrimental to U.S. interests. Volume II, Patterns and Trends in Resource Supplies and Policies, presents detailed case studies of nine specific resources of interest to both countries. Volume III, Perspectives, Prospects, and Policy Options, examines the resource sector from the perspectives of corporate investors, workers, and environmentalists and concludes with a review of policy options and prospects for the bilateral relationship.

Book excerpt: Creating Postwar Canada showcases new research on this complex period, exploring postwar Canada's diverse symbols and battlegrounds. Contributors to the first half of the collection consider evolving definitions of the nation, examining the ways in which Canada was reimagined to include both the Canadian North and landscapes structured by trade and commerce. The essays in the latter half analyze debates on shopping hours, professional striptease, the "provider" role of fathers, interracial adoption, sexuality on campus, and illegal drug use, issues that shaped how the country defined itself in sociocultural and political terms. This collection contributes to the historiography of nationalism, gender and the family, consumer cultures, and countercultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry G. Johnson is best known as one of Canada's most respected economists, particularly for his research on international trade and finance and monetary policy. But Johnson was also a prolific and influential public intellectual. A sharp and popular polemicist, he wrote on a wide range of subjects, from advertising to affluence to foreign investment, and was published in Punch and The Spectator as well as all the leading economic journals. The Canadian Quandary is a collection of "unbuttoned" pieces written in Johnson's witty and acerbic style between 1958 and 1963. Focusing on Canadian policy on trade and foreign policy, the volume includes Johnson's classic dismemberment of the Canadian nationalist movement. Although Trudeau's Foreign Investment Review Agency and National Energy Policy have been dismantled, economic nationalism persists; it is a testament to both the lucidity of Johnson's mind and the vigour and clarity of his writing that many of his opinions on this debate remain fresh, interesting, and relevant. William Watson's introduction provides an intriguing look at Johnson's life and work.
