Book excerpt: This contract involved a major effort in bringing to, maturity, a first-principles theory of semiconductor lasers and amplifiers based on a fully microscopic description of the light semiconductor material coupling. Earlier successes at the microscopic physics level enabled us to obtain quantitative agreement with gain/index and linewidth enhancement spectra measured for a variety of Quantum Well structures. The microscopic studies were extended to materials lasing at eye safe and telecoms wavelengths. In particular, in a joint collaboration between Arizona, Marburg and Infineon of Munich, we were able to quantitatively verify gain spectra of novel Nitrogen-doped GaAs and InGaAS materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable book provides a comprehensive treatment of design and applications of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA). SOA is an important component for optical communication systems. It has applications as in-line amplifiers and as functional devices in evolving optical networks. The functional applications of SOAs were first studied in the early 1990's, since then the diversity and scope of such applications have been steadily growing. This is the second edition of a book on Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers first published in 2006 by the same authors. Several chapters and sections representing new developments in the chapters of the first edition have been added. The new chapters cover quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifiers (QD-SOA), reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOA) for passive optical network applications, two-photon absorption in amplifiers, and, applications of SOA as broadband sources. They represent advances in research, technology and commercial trends in the area of semiconductor optical amplifiers.Semiconductor Optical Amplifier is self-contained and unified in presentation. It can be used as an advanced text by graduate students and by practicing engineers. It is also suitable for non-experts who wish to have an overview of optical amplifiers. The treatments in the book are detailed enough to capture the interest of the curious reader and complete enough to provide the necessary background to explore the subject further.

Book excerpt: This reference book provides a fully integrated novel approach to the development of high-power, single-transverse mode, edge-emitting diode lasers by addressing the complementary topics of device engineering, reliability engineering and device diagnostics in the same book, and thus closes the gap in the current book literature. Diode laser fundamentals are discussed, followed by an elaborate discussion of problem-oriented design guidelines and techniques, and by a systematic treatment of the origins of laser degradation and a thorough exploration of the engineering means to enhance the optical strength of the laser. Stability criteria of critical laser characteristics and key laser robustness factors are discussed along with clear design considerations in the context of reliability engineering approaches and models, and typical programs for reliability tests and laser product qualifications. Novel, advanced diagnostic methods are reviewed to discuss, for the first time in detail in book literature, performance- and reliability-impacting factors such as temperature, stress and material instabilities. Further key features include: practical design guidelines that consider also reliability related effects, key laser robustness factors, basic laser fabrication and packaging issues; detailed discussion of diagnostic investigations of diode lasers, the fundamentals of the applied approaches and techniques, many of them pioneered by the author to be fit-for-purpose and novel in the application; systematic insight into laser degradation modes such as catastrophic optical damage, and a wide range of technologies to increase the optical strength of diode lasers; coverage of basic concepts and techniques of laser reliability engineering with details on a standard commercial high power laser reliability test program. Semiconductor Laser Engineering, Reliability and Diagnostics reflects the extensive expertise of the author in the diode laser field both as a top scientific researcher as well as a key developer of high-power highly reliable devices. With invaluable practical advice, this new reference book is suited to practising researchers in diode laser technologies, and to postgraduate engineering students.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In - V semiconductors are indispensable for, today's optoelectronic devices such as semiconductor lasers and optical amplifiers in the 1.3 urn wavelength band used for fibre optic communication systems. This has led to the invention of a dilute nitride GaInNAs that is lattice matched to GaAs for such applications. The research reported in this thesis is aimed to design, processinA and characterisation of 1.3 ,. ;,f •...... " ." urn GaInNAs optoelectronic devices, the operation of which is based on either longitudinal or vertical transport. Most of the attention was paid to the development of electrically driven Vertical Cavity Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (VCSOAs). VCSOAs have a number .of advantages over Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs), such as high coupling efficiency to optical fib er, polarisation independent gain, and low power consumption due to a small active volume. Previous devices have been limited by low output power and thermal problems. Furthermore, optical and electrical properties of the Distributed Bragg Mirrors (DBRs), commercial Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs), Hot Electron Light Emitting and Lasing in Semiconductor Heterostructures (HELLISH)-VCSOAs and Finally TOP-HAT HELLISH-VCSOAs have been studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optoelectronic devices transform electrical signals into optical signals (and vice versa) by utilizing the interaction of electrons and light. Advanced software tools for the design and analysis of such devices have been developed in recent years. However, the large variety of materials, devices, physical mechanisms, and modeling approaches often makes it difficult to select appropriate theoretical models or software packages. This book presents a review of devices and advanced simulation approaches written by leading researchers and software developers. It is intended for scientists and device engineers in optoelectronics who are interested in using advanced software tools. Each chapter includes the theoretical background as well as practical simulation results that help the reader to better understand internal device physics. Real-world devices such as edge-emitting or surface-emitting laser diodes, light-emitting diodes, solar cells, photodetectors, and integrated optoelectronic circuits are investigated. The software packages described in the book are available to the public, on a commercial or noncommercial basis, so that the interested reader is quickly able to perform similar simulations.
