Download or read book Selvagens Islands Nature Reserve, Portugal written by Council of Europe and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the European network of protected areas, the Selvagens Islands Nature Reserve undeniably occupies a position of paramount importance. From the botanical point of view the islands, or at least two of them (Selvagem Pequena and Ilheu de Fora) are still practically virgin, which probably represents a unique situation in the Atlantic. From the zoological viewpoint, they represent the main "reservoir" of pelagic birds in the sub-tropical zone of the North Atlantic. It is these two features which give the islands their exceptional scientific interest and their value as part of the European natural heritage."--Back cover.

Book Synopsis Emerging Marine Biotoxins by : Ana Gago-Mart´ınez
Download or read book Emerging Marine Biotoxins written by Ana Gago-Mart´ınez and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of marine and freshwater toxins in geographical areas where they have never been reported before is a concern due to the considerable impact on (sea)food contamination, and consequently, on public health. Several groups of marine biotoxins, in particular tetrodotoxins, ciguatoxins, and palytoxins, are included among the relevant marine biotoxins that have recently emerged in several coastal areas. A similar situation has been observed in freshwater, where cyanobacterial toxins, such as microcystins, could end up in unexpected areas such as the estuaries where shellfish are cultivated. Climate change and the increased availability of nutrients have been considered as the key factors in the expansion of all of these toxins into new areas; however, this could also be due to more intense biological invasions, more sensitive analytical methods, or perhaps even an increased scientific interest in these natural contaminations. The incidences of human intoxications due to the consumption of seafood contaminated with these toxins have made their study an important task to accomplish in order to protect human health. This Special Issue has a focus on a wide variety of emerging biotoxin classes and techniques to identify and quantify them.

Each chapter concentrates on a general period in human history which has been characterised by large scale changes in the relationship of human societies to the biosphere, and gives three case-studies that illustrate the significant patterns occurring at that time. Little environmental or historical knowledge is assumed from the reader in this introduction to environmental history.

Book Synopsis The Selvagens, Forgotten Atlantic Islands by : Alex Ritsema
Download or read book The Selvagens, Forgotten Atlantic Islands written by Alex Ritsema and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the Canary and Madeira Islands, we find the tiny, barren and uninhabited Selvagens. Far from the tourist crowds, these volcanic outcrops house fantastic seabird colonies and unique species of flora and fauna. The Selvagens were colonized by Portugal in 1438. Being virtually destitute of water, they have only had temporary inhabitants like fishermen, bird hunters and scientists. Many stories have been told about buried pirate treasures; we do not know whether those treasures ever existed but this book reveals some spectacular stories of genuine treasure hunts. Born in 1963, the author is a non-fiction author about islands and maritime history. His website is www.aworldofislands.com.

Book excerpt: Atlantic Islands is a long-established cruising guide to the five island groups of the North Atlantic, commonly visited by those sailing the popular Atlantic crossing routes but increasingly enjoyed as cruising destinations in their own right. From the sun-baked lagoons of Bemuda to the verdant slopes of the Azores and Madeira, from the fiery landscapes of the Canaries to the less visited coastlines of the Cape Verdes, this seventh edition has thoroughly updated text and plans and is illustrated with numerous new photographs. Together they enrich the coverage overall with their first-hand knowledge of each of the island groups. An essential companion for those planning a cruise any of the North Atlantic island groups, even more so for anyone planning an Atlantic crossing or circuit. The seventh edition of Atlantic Islands builds on solid foundations…The co-authors know their group of islands inside-out and it shows in the depth of content and recommendations within the guide…..If you are planning on crossing the Atlantic and don’t yet have a copy, then this new seventh edition should be on your pre-departure shopping list. “It is difficult to fault this pilot. Told uniquely from the wife's perspective, Sandra Clayton was initially a reluctant sailor, but became a keen yachtswoman by the end of the first book when the couple sailed from the UK to the Mediterranean. In this installment she describes their transatlantic crossing, from Gibraltar via the Atlantic Islands to the Caribbean, and ending up in Fort Lauderdale. Sandra's previous two books have attracted a loyal and growing readership both in the UK and the US, no doubt due to her engaging writing style. A Thousand Miles from Anywhere is a similarly entertaining travelogue about the Claytons' experiences, detailing the wonderful places they visited, the fascinating people they met and the humorous situations they got involved in.
