To Live Freely in This World is the first book to tell the story of the brave activists at the beating heart of the sex workers’ rights movement in Africa—the newest and most vibrant face of the global sex workers’ rights struggle. African sex worker activists are proving that communities facing human rights abuses are not bereft of agency. They’re challenging politicians, religious fundamentalists, and anti-prostitution advocates; confronting the multiple stigmas that affect the diverse members of their communities; engaging in intersectional movement building with similarly marginalized groups; and participating in the larger global sex workers’ rights struggle in order to determine their social and political fate. Book excerpt: This book is based on the year’s field work originally undertaken by Dr. Omondi with a number of sex workers and their clients and other stakeholders including police and bar owners on the Malindi coast-line of Kenya. This book is not only an analysis of the modes of life of the sex workers, and their motives and strategies, but it is also a story of female empowerment for a number of women as they create paths through the ambiguity of Kenya’s laws and the application of those laws. Additionally, in describing the strategies it might be said that this book is also a warning to older male tourists as they are lied to, tricked and taken advantage of by the stratagems adopted by many of the women. Not all women are successful, but a sufficient number are, and their success is a model for many other who would wish to emulate their achievements.This book differs from others books on this subject. This book is premised in qualitative research paradigms and grounded research with respondents with whom the first author has had a relationship of approximately a year while doing field work and in several instances, communications continued past that year. This form of research also generated a number of ethical and practical problems that are also discussed in the book. There is also an additional chapter which discusses the implications of Covid for sex workers in Kenya.

Book excerpt: Documenting Human Rights Violations of Sex Workers in Kenya details the abuses experienced by sex workers throughout the country, and analyzes the policy framework that undermines sex workers' access to rights. Pervasive stigma and discrimination against sex workers and a lack of legal recourse leaves sex workers disenfranchised and vulnerable to egregious human rights violations. The study finds that Kenya's laws and practices in relation to sex work breach its own constitutional provisions and violate standards contained in international human rights instruments which Kenya has ratified and agreed to abide. Among other recommendations, the report calls on the Kenyan government and state institutions to address the human rights concerns of sex workers by reviewing present laws and polices to ensure they adequately protect and respect sex workers' rights, providing access to legal aid, educating sex workers about their rights, and instituting mechanisms for them to obtain redress for violations committed against them. The report serves as a tool for sex workers and their allies to advocate for these and other measures for rights protection. This report was supported by the Public Health Program's Sexual Health and Rights Project and Law and Health Initiative, as well as the Open Society Initiative for East Africa.

Book excerpt: The reasons why African women become engaged in sex work have received little attention in academic research. While it is largely acknowledged that there exists a connection between entering the sex trade and poverty, not all women who are poor enter sex work. Through the use of life histories with 21 women between the ages of 18 and 42, this thesis explores the combination of factors that lead women and girls to become commercial sex workers in Nairobi, Kenya. This method provides a detailed look at initiation into sex work as it occurs over the life course for women and girls in this context. Additionally, this thesis examines how structural violence impinges on their lives, thereby increasing vulnerability to engagement in sex work. Examining the larger socio-political and economic contexts illustrates how issues such as HIV/AIDS, migrant labour, changing gender roles, the erosion of existing familial structures and gender inequities structure risk for suffering for women. These issues result in many girls losing caregiver support by being orphaned, while additionally, women are burdened with providing total economic and social support for the family in a society that has gendered economic opportunities. Both girls and women are left with few options other than the sex trade to survive.

Though sex workers have long been identified as crucial in affecting the spread of HIV/AIDS, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, the nature of sex-for-money transactions remains poorly understood. Using a unique panel dataset constructed from 192 self-reported sex worker diaries which include detailed information on sexual behavior, labor supply, and health shocks, the authors find that sex workers adjust their supply of risky, better compensated sex to cope with unexpected health shocks, exposing themselves to increased risk of HIV infection. In particular, women are 3.1 percent more likely to see a client, 21.2 percent more likely to have anal sex, and 19.1 percent more likely to have unprotected sex on days in which a household member falls ill. Women also increase their supply of risky sex on days after missing work due to symptoms from a sexually transmitted infection. Given that HIV prevalence has been estimated at 9.8 percent in this part of Kenya, these behavioral responses entail significant health risks for sex workers and their partners, and suggest that sex workers are unable to cope with risk through other formal or informal consumption smoothing mechanisms.
