Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers make a difference. The success of any plan for improving educational outcomes depends on the teachers who carry it out and thus on the abilities of those attracted to the field and their preparation. Yet there are many questions about how teachers are being prepared and how they ought to be prepared. Yet, teacher preparation is often treated as an afterthought in discussions of improving the public education system. Preparing Teachers addresses the issue of teacher preparation with specific attention to reading, mathematics, and science. The book evaluates the characteristics of the candidates who enter teacher preparation programs, the sorts of instruction and experiences teacher candidates receive in preparation programs, and the extent that the required instruction and experiences are consistent with converging scientific evidence. Preparing Teachers also identifies a need for a data collection model to provide valid and reliable information about the content knowledge, pedagogical competence, and effectiveness of graduates from the various kinds of teacher preparation programs. Federal and state policy makers need reliable, outcomes-based information to make sound decisions, and teacher educators need to know how best to contribute to the development of effective teachers. Clearer understanding of the content and character of effective teacher preparation is critical to improving it and to ensuring that the same critiques and questions are not being repeated 10 years from now.

Whether or not this is a recognition of apparent existential challenges or not, aspiring higher education administrators, faculty, and trustees need to have an understanding of the varying types of higher education institutions in the USA and an awareness of how other countries structure their higher education systems and how they are preparing to deal with the challenges. Additionally, they require deep knowledge of how these systems measure success or failure. Improving Higher Education Models Through International Comparative Analysis explores critical aspects and challenges in the higher education setting, describes and analyzes initiatives being taken to address these challenges, and presents case studies to help foster a better understanding and create competency in strategic thinking and problem solving for higher education leadership. Covering key topics such as sustainability, education systems, and the digital age, this premier reference source is ideal for administrators, policymakers, researchers, academicians, practitioners, scholars, instructors, and students.

It engages with critical concerns and attempts to provide a comprehensive and holistic perspective on how governance and quality management are conceptualised, debated, developed, and implemented in the teacher education sector in India. Drawing arguments from research and contributions of academicians, the book explores four central themes of teacher education, namely, governance and management in teacher education, management of pre-service teacher education, quality management in teacher education, and financing and political economy of teacher education. It focuses on the current operational model, situational efficiency, and provides a comprehensive analysis of the various reforms and initiatives taken at theoretical and practical levels for the transformation of teacher education. Presenting a focused overview of the critical dimensions of teacher education, and rich in empirical evidence, this book will be of interest to students, researchers, and teachers of education, sociology of education, urban education, politics of education, and educational studies. It will also be useful for teachers, teacher educators, academicians, scholars, and policymakers in the education sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes to excite readers to engage in conversations on how Schools and Colleges of Education can internationalize teacher education programs so that graduates have global teaching experiences, that teacher education curricula include global perspectives, and that there are opportunities to have faculty think and teach from a global perspective. The contributions in this book are by authors who have the knowledge and expertise in international teacher education to answer many questions regarding the development of a 21st century competent global teaching force. They describe their experiences, programs, and support for the goal of continuing to internationalize Schools and Colleges of Education. The book is designed to be interactive - readers are encouraged to engage themselves in the conversation as the editor invites them to e-mail any of the authors to discuss questions posed. Questions addressed in this issue include defining internationalization, global teacher competency, hearing "voices from the field" as graduates and faculty share how internationalization has had an impact on teaching, program development, and professional and personal development. This book was originally published as a special issue of Teaching Education.
