Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to understand Bandura's (1977) self-efficacy and Vealey's (1986) sport confidence implications on intercollegiate athletics and to explore gender and experience level differences related to self-efficacy in intercollegiate athletes. The study attempted to fill two major gaps in previous research, i.e., relationships of gender and playing experience on self-efficacy, specifically by analyzing a variety of sports, expanding upon previous research studies, as well as increasing the generalizability and external validity of the existing self-efficacy theories. The results of the study indicated that student-athletes have high levels of self-efficacy, which supported the first hypothesis; next, that males possessed higher levels than females, which supported the second hypothesis; and finally, that experience levels were not statistically significant in the resulting levels of self-efficacy, which did not support the final hypothesis.

Book excerpt: Student-athletes face pressures different to their non-athletic peers. This difference has resulted in lower graduation rates overall, and particularly low graduation rates in some universities. Using a framework of social cognitive theory, reciprocal determinism and self-efficacy, this study investigated the academic and athletic self-efficacy of student-athletes in one New Zealand high school. The qualitative case study used data from semi-structured interviews of six students at a secondary, all boys, decile nine, public school. Interview data were analysed through a thematic analysis to establish salient themes that illustrate the experience of those six students at this point in time. Findings suggest that students hold a high value for the input of their teachers and coaches; students recalled differing affective states for classroom and athletic situations; students noted how their individual self-efficacy was different to their group self-efficacy; and that different students allowed different levels of environmental influence on their self-efficacy. The research supports claims that teachers and sport coaches make an important contribution to student-athlete's self-efficacy beliefs. Teachers and coaches promote self-efficacy by creating efficacious classroom and sporting environments that both engage with the affective domain and recognise that individual student-athletes will develop self-efficacy through a range of different sources. In addition, both coaches and teachers would benefit by focussing on how environment, personal factors and behaviour interact to strengthen self-efficacy beliefs.

The research questions were: What differences in satisfaction levels, if any, can be found among starting players and role players with coach leadership, social support, and vicarious/environmental factors? What differences exist, if any, in the level of self-efficacy of starting players and role players? What impact does coach leadership play in motivating role players to continue playing?

College Student Athletes written by Ashley E. Janosko and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been limited research that focuses on Division III college student athletes and the career development process. Although previous researchers have studied the relationship between athletic identity and career decision making self-efficacy (CDMSE) among college student athletes, results have been inconsistent, with different researchers finding inverse, positive, or no relationships between variables. In addition, numerous researchers have examined career development among college student athletes. However, there has been no research to date that studies professional development engagement (PDE) and college student athletes. In addition, the majority of career development studies involving college student athletes have focused on either Division I or II schools. To address this gap, the current research project utilized three variables (athletic identity, CDMSE, and PDE) to try to gain an understanding of factors that may impact the career development process for traditional age college students (College Student Non-Athletes; CSNA) and college student-athletes in a Division III school. Chickering’s Identity Development Theory was used as a lens to examine identity development among the populations of interest. The researcher conducted a quantitative study at an NCAA Division III university in the northeastern region of the United States to examine the relationship between PDE and CDMSE among college student athletes (research question 1). Furthermore, this research was designed to determine if the association between PDE and CDMSE changed when controlling for athletic identity (research question 2). Lastly, the author examined this same set of variables and controls (the association between PDE and CDMSE when controlling for athletic identity) to see if there was a significant difference between college student athletes vs. CNSAs (research question 3). NCAA Division III student athletes and CSNA completed an online survey consisting of three instruments (Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, Career Decision Making Short-Form, and Professional Development Engagement Scale) and a demographic questionnaire. The results suggest that higher levels of PDE lead to higher level of CDMSE, and that higher levels of athletic identity were related to higher levels of CDMSE when controlling for PDE. Furthermore, in both the student athlete and the CNSA samples, there was no significant relationship difference in the association between PDE and CDMSE when accounting for athletic identity. Additionally, implications for research, practice, and teaching are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between state mindfulness and self-efficacy in open-skill, team sports. The study involved Division III men’s ice hockey and lacrosse players from a private college who participated on a volunteer basis. After a brief survey regarding the player’s prior experience with mindfulness, all eligible participants (n = 19; mean age = 19.58) took part in the study by completing a questionnaire measure of self-efficacy in a competition state and the State Mindfulness Scale (Tanay & Bernstein, 2013). The relationship between self-efficacy and state mindfulness was determined using a correlation analysis. There was no significant linear relationship between self-efficacy and the SMS Total score (r = .083, p = .74). There was also no significant linear relationship found between self-efficacy and the two subscales of the SMS; Mind (r = .107, p = .66) and Body (r = .015, p = .95). There was a significant relationship between the SMS Body and SMS Mind subscales in a positive direction (r = .664, p = .002). Future research may seek to study self-efficacy and state mindfulness in a laboratory or field setting and for a longer period of time than a singular exposure.
