Book excerpt: "In the last three decades, research has emphasized the importance of self-determination as an applied practice used to assist students with intellectual disabilities in successfully transitioning to adulthood. The proposed study was aimed at examining self-determination levels of students with intellectual disabilities based on the educators' perspectives using the AIR Self-Determination Scale: Educator Form. Study participants were five educators who taught Occupational Course of Study (OCS) in three high schools in North Carolina and twenty-seven of their students who were receiving special education services under the category of intellectual disabilities. Qualitative and quantitative data were gathered and analyzed in order to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses in OCS students. Results regarding students' gender, students' grade, and educators' experience were not statistically significant using the Air Self-Determination Scale: Educator Form. Furthermore, there was a medium significant positive correlation between students' Opportunity and Capacity scores, and there was a strong significant positive correlation between the Knowledge score and the overall Level. Results from this study served as a determinant of furthering practices used in schools to increase OCS students' overall independence."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: There is a lack of research demonstrating self-determination skills being taught at the elementary level. This pre-post design study examined the impact of implementing a self-determination curriculum unit to two groups of fourth graders, ages nine to eleven years old, who receive special education for various diagnoses, including specific learning disability, speech and language impairment, other health impairment, and autism. Eleven students learned about self-determination (i.e. self-awareness, self-advocacy, choice making, and goal setting) through 28 lessons which included the use of role playing, hands-on activities, and literature. All participants, students, their parents, and their teachers, completed the AIR Self-Determination Scale before and after the curriculum intervention. Researcher reflection notes, student responses to post-intervention motivation scales, responses to research supplemental questions on pre- and post-surveys from parents and teachers were additional data sources. The findings indicate that overall, there were examples of growth in students' self-determined behaviors. In particular, the capacity scores from the AIR measure showed an increase in perceptions of students' self-determination skills, based on parent and teacher surveys. In discussions during the unit lessons, all students were able to articulate their goals and recognize the meaning of key self-determination terms in various aspects of the curriculum. Recommendations for practice include implementing the curriculum unit with a larger number of students, including students in general education and those with more significant disabilities. Further research should be conducted to identify more long term effects of elementary-level self-determination curriculum for students with disabilities.

The pedagogy is based on decades of research on strategy instruction as well as on a theory of learning that claims these four conditions promote self-determined learning in all learners: (1) opportunities to choose expectations for gaining something from a learning challenge, (2) strategies that regulate responses to meet those expectations, (3) comparisons between results and expectations that provoke additional adjustment in expectations and responses, and (4) persistent engagement and adjustment until results match expectations. The pedagogy of self-instruction described in this book anchors these conditions in everyday instruction so students can learn by adjusting to their own expectations. Chapter 1 compares this approach to the teacher-directed methods of direct instruction that require teachers to set expectations for students, control how students respond to them, evaluate the outcomes they produce, and then prescribe adjustments students must make to improve. Chapter 2 provides evidence that too much of special education instruction reflects this teacher-directed approach and as a consequence discourages students from learning how to learn on their own.
