Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preparing Principals for a Changing World provides a hands-on resource for creating and implementing effective policies and programs for developing expert school leaders. Written by acclaimed author and educator Linda Darling-Hammond and experts Debra Meyerson, Michelle LaPointe, and Margaret Terry Orr, this important book examines the characteristics of successful educational leadership programs and offers concrete recommendations to improve programs nationwide. In a study funded by the Wallace Foundation, Darling-Hammond and the team examined eight exemplary principal development programs, as well as state policies and principals' experiences across the country. Using the data from the study, they reveal how successful programs are structured, the skills and knowledge participants gain, and what they are able to do in practice as school leaders as a result. What do these exemplary programs have in common? Aggressive recruitment; close ties with schools in the community; on-the-ground training under the wing of expert principals, and a strong emphasis on the cutting-edge theories of instructional and transformational leadership. In addition to highlighting the programs' similarities, the study also explains the differences among the programs and sheds light on the effectiveness of approaches and models from different states and contexts?East, West, North, and South; urban and rural; pre-service and in-service. The authors analyze program outcomes for principals and their schools, including illustrative case studies and educators' voices on the influence of programs' strategies for recruitment, internships, mentoring, and coursework. The ideas and suggestions outlined in Preparing Principals for a Changing World are presented with the goal of increasing the number of highly qualified, thoughtful, and innovative educational leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large urban public school system in the piedmont of North Carolina was the setting for this study. Individual school data as well as aggregated data from 25 studied schools were analyzed in order to form overall conclusion of perceptions of leadership for the elementary schools within the system. -- The purpose of this quantitative survey study was to examine principal perceptions of their leadership behaviors and determine if they aligned with teacher perceptions of these same behaviors using the five practices of exemplary leadership of The Leadership Challenge. The researcher disaggregated the data to identify areas of strength and weakness and compared the perceptions to the teachers they lead. The researcher also disaggregated data to determine the relationship of perceptions based on gender and teacher experience level to determine if either of leadership behaviors affect teacher perceptions of principal leadership. -- Through collecting research surveys of principals and teachers, the quantitative data were analyzed to determine if there was an alignment between teacher perceptions of leadership behaviors and leaders’ self-perceived behaviors. -- Three main findings resulted from the study. First, there was not a significant statistical difference in teacher perceptions of principal practices using the five exemplary leadership behaviors based on years of experience. Second, a gender difference emerged such that female principals were more likely to “challenge the process” than male principals. In other words, female principals showed a greater willingness to take risks and search for new opportunities (at least according to their own self-report). Third, teacher ratings of principal leadership behaviors aligned well with the principals’ own ratings.

Book Synopsis Investigation of the Self-Perceived Leadership Orientations of School Principals Serving Alliance Schools Within the State of Connecticut by : Sam T. Galloway

Galloway and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This mixed-methods study examined the self-perceived leadership orientation of principals serving Alliance school districts within the state of Connecticut. The Connecticut State Department of Education has classified the 30 lowest performing districts as Alliance school districts. This study expanded the existing body of knowledge pertaining to the Bolman and Deal (2003) multiframe explanation of organizational leaders by applying various leadership frames to identify and effectively respond to organizational situations and by including Alliance school principals in the sample population. The data analysis confirmed that Alliance principals use all four of the Bolman and Deal leadership frames in their decision-making process (i.e., structural, human resource, political, and symbolic). The analysis also found that principals apply reframing as a decision-making strategy as situations evolve. Effective leaders apply one or more of the four leadership frames to determine the best course of action. The 15 interviews conducted for this study revealed that all of the participating principals had experienced the need to make decisions during crisis events such as school evacuations and lockdowns, as well as medical emergencies, and they applied the reframing process. The data also revealed that, contrary to their personal descriptions of themselves, the participating principals are political leaders. Through their descriptions of the manner in which they changed the cultures of their schools or advocated for their schools at the district and community levels, they demonstrated a high level of political acumen. The complexities of the principalship were clearly evident in the data collected for this study. The principals managed challenging crisis situations, during which the school community relied upon them for leadership. Every principal will be called upon to manage a crisis event at some point during his or her career. This study not only confirmed this certainty, but provides recommendations for both aspiring and current administrators as they seek to effectively support all stakeholders through such challenging, and often traumatic, events.

This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how the participants perceived their principal's transformational and transactional leadership style and whether differences existed in their perceptions based on the demographic variables of age, gender, experience, educational attainment and ethnicity. Transformational leaders were considered influential, change agents who motivated teachers to work collaboratively as a team to achieve defined goals. On the other hand, transactional leaders developed impersonal relationships and motivated teachers according to their personal self-interest. They focused on social and economic exchanges, using contingent rewards to reinforce positive behaviors and administered punishment to reform negative behaviors. One hundred and thirteen participants from six elementary schools participated in this study. The Multi-Leadership Questionnaire was used to collect data. Cronbach alpha was used to establish internal reliability consistency of the instrument. The data were analyzed using mean scores, percentages, chi-square, t-test and ANOVA. The research findings indicated that perception scores at both school levels were higher for transformational leadership than transactional leadership. According to the mean score interpretation (Table 2) and the participants' mean scores, 92.9 % of participants perceived their principal as fairly often a transformational leader and 7.1% of participants perceived their principal as frequently a transformational leader. Ironically, 100% of participants perceived their principal as sometimes a transactional leader. The research findings further indicated that overall, teachers at both levels perceived their principal as fairly often a transformational leader and sometimes a transactional leader. Based on the demographic findings, an ANOVA revealed statistically significant differences in teachers' perceptions of their principal's transformational leadership style based on years of experience. Participants with more years of experience perceived their principal with significantly higher mean scores than those with fewer years of experience. Recommendations include: (a) conducting further research to determine the impact that principals' leadership style have on student performance from a national perspective, (b) conducting a Longitudinal Research study to determine the impact that leadership styles have on student performance, and (c) exploring leadership styles extensively to identify the leadership traits exhibited by both public and private elementary school principals.
