Book excerpt: The Republic is a Socratic dialogue, written by Plato around 380 BCE, concerning the definition of justice, the order and character of the just city-state and the just man. The dramatic date of the dialogue has been much debated and though it must take place some time during the Peloponnesian War, "there would be jarring anachronisms if any of the candidate specific dates between 432 and 404 were assigned". It is Plato's best-known work and has proven to be one of the most intellectually and historically influential works of philosophy and political theory. In it, Socrates along with various Athenians and foreigners discuss the meaning of justice and examine whether or not the just man is happier than the unjust man by considering a series of different cities coming into existence "in speech", culminating in a city (Kallipolis) ruled by philosopher-kings; and by examining the nature of existing regimes. The participants also discuss the theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the roles of the philosopher and of poetry in society.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Plato It has often been observed that the eminent figures of the world's intellectual history have been, in a singular degree, men of their own age; men whose sympathies were keenly attuned to the impulses of a certain special period of human development, their works rooted in its cravings, addressed to its capacities, racy of the soil in which they grew. This is doubtless true; but it is also true that the very greatest have commonly been men not of one but of two ages. They help to forward some great change and advance in the development of the human spirit: they help it, but they are also its product, and not less are they the product of the order which they displace. They look before and after; and we see those few towering figures touched with the sunset light of one epoch and the dawn of another. There is Shakespeare, for instance, so full of the feudal spirit, with all its stateliness and splendour, yet so genially alive to the exuberant democratic vitality of the new era, whose figures, grotesque, jovial, audacious, and unabashed, mingle in his pages with the stately procession of courtiers and princes, and justify their claim to be there by their own inherent human interest. Book excerpt: The "theory of forms" usually attributed to Plato is one of the most famous of philosophical theories, yet it has engendered such controversy in the literature on Plato that scholars even debate whether or not such a theory exists in his texts. Plato's Forms: Varieties of Interpretation is an ambitious work that brings together, in a single volume, widely divergent approaches to the topic of the forms in Plato's dialogues. With contributions rooted in both Anglo-American and Continental philosophy, the book illustrates the contentious role the forms have played in Platonic scholarship and suggests new approaches to a central problem of Plato studies.

Book excerpt: This classic text, which contains the complete Greek text of the Apology and of Crito with other selections, offers an introduction to Plato’s language as well as an introduction to Socrates as presented by Plato. These two goals determined Lewis Leaming Forman’s ample selection of passages from the writings of Plato. Forman’s detailed and helpful notes enhance appreciation of how Greek prose—particularly Plato’s—produces its effects. They include helpful discussions of syntax, the uses of particles, the effects of word order, and rhetorical devices. Forman also includes an appendix with an additional set of notes containing information chiefly on various syntactic patterns in the Greek language. Particularly suitable for second-, third-, or fourth-year students of Greek, this volume is also a useful resource for the Platonic scholar.

Book excerpt: Benjamin Jowett's translations of Plato have long been classics in their own right. In this volume, Professor Hayden Pelliccia has revised Jowett's renderings of five key dialogues, giving us a modern Plato faithful to both Jowett's best features and Plato's own masterly style. Gathered here are many of Plato's liveliest and richest texts. Ion takes up the question of poetry and introduces the Socratic method. Protagoras discusses poetic interpretation and shows why cross-examination is the best way to get at the truth. Phaedrus takes on the nature of rhetoric, psychology, and love, as does the famous Symposium. Finally, Apology gives us Socrates' art of persuasion put to the ultimate test--defending his own life. Pelliccia's new Introduction to this volume clarifies its contents and addresses the challenges of translating Plato freshly and accurately. In its combination of accessibility and depth, Selected Dialogues of Plato is the ideal introduction to one of the key thinkers of all time.

Book excerpt: OF ALL philosophers, it is Plato who most persuasively invites the readerby the fertility of his thought and the magic of his style. Not only do his writings contain the germs of most of the problems that philosophers still discuss, but his. prophetic vision has often discerned, beyond the wilderness of disputation, a promised land. Nevertheless Plato was not a mere system-maker; he preferred rather to cast his thought in the form of vigorous dialogues in which the reader may perceive the condieting currents of thought. Hence the perennial freshness and vitality of his philosophy; it lives as drama lives, and is always contemporary. The translation of Plato's dialogues by Benjamin Jowett, late Master of Balliol College and Regius Professor of Greek in the University of Oxford, has long been recognized as an English classic. A general introduction provides a survey of the elements in Plato's philosophy and of his peculiar genius, with some indication of his importance for the modern world. Generous selections from = number of the more important dialogues, some extensive, others brief, give a fair conception of the philosopher's many-sided interests; special introduction summaries of omitted portions, and notes, help the reader to understand the relation of the selections. A list of further reading guides is also included for those who may wish to extend their knowledge of Plato.
