Book Synopsis The Fall of Jerusalem and the Christian Church by : S. G. F. Brandon
Download or read book The Fall of Jerusalem and the Christian Church written by S. G. F. Brandon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What lies between the authoritative preeminence of the Mother Church of Jerusalem and the virtual extinction both of its life and apparently of all its local records? Dr. Brandon finds that the full significance of the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70 has been strangely neglected amongst scholars. In this original and exhaustive study he shows that this catastrophic event was of profound importance not only for the development of early Christianity but possibly also for its very survival. Besides an ordered survey of other ancient historians, this book demonstrates an extensive study of New Testament origins, and many will find special interest in the light it throws upon the origin and purpose of canonical works. This book faces serious problems of New Testament study that have generally been too easily dismissed, and it makes a definite and original contribution towards their solution.
Book Synopsis The History of the Jewish People in the Age of Jesus Christ: Volume 2 by : Emil Schürer
Download or read book The History of the Jewish People in the Age of Jesus Christ: Volume 2 written by Emil Schürer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emil Schürer's Geschichte des judischen Volkes im Zeitalter Jesu Christi, originally published in German between 1874 and 1909 and in English between 1885 and 1891, is a critical presentation of Jewish history, institutions, and literature from 175 B.C. to A.D. 135. It has rendered invaluable services to scholars for nearly a century. The present work offers a fresh translation and a revision of the entire subject-matter. The bibliographies have been rejuvenated and supplemented; the sources are presented according to the latest scholarly editions; and all the new archaeological, epigraphical, numismatic and literary evidence, including the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bar Kokhba documents, has been introduced into the survey. Account has also been taken of the progress in historical research, both in the classical and Jewish fields. This work reminds students of the profound debt owed to nineteenth-century learning, setting it within a wider framework of contemporary knowledge, and provides a foundation on which future historians of Judaism in the age of Jesus may build.

Book Synopsis Robert Lansing:A Study in Statecraft by : David Glaser
Download or read book Robert Lansing:A Study in Statecraft written by David Glaser and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a study of the career of Robert Lansing, Woodrow Wilson’s Secretary of State from 1915 to 1920. Holding this office during the neutrality period, America’s entry into World War I, and the peace negotiations that followed, his was an important position at a critical juncture in American history. While many historians have dismissed Lansing’s contributions as insubstantial, this author believes otherwise. This work will show that in nudging a reluctant president toward war with Germany Lansing was persuasive indeed. His most important contributions, however, came after Wilson returned to the United States in 1919 and became incapacitated during the fight for ratification of the Treaty of Versailles. In the months that followed Lansing took the position of leadership in the Cabinet, holding important meetings on all of the issues of the day and reassuring the nation that the Executive branch of government still functioned. He also helped to resolve critical Mexican and Russian issues. Finally, and most importantly during this period, Lansing was in league with the strong reservations in attempting to force Wilson to accept modifications to the Treaty as a condition for ratification. In this regard he provided the Republican opposition with important information regarding compromises made at Paris and the feelings of both himself and other Commissioners as to flaws in the Treaty. Throughout his career Lansing was a strong proponent of his views on the key issues of the day. Sadly when faced with a President of equally strong views, often different from his own, Lansing resorted to indirection, deception and ultimately disloyalty in attempting to achieve his objectives. In the end Lansing’s many positive contributions were diminished by the actions of his final days.
