Book excerpt: AL-SHUSHTARI The Great Sufi Poet of Andalusia SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction by Paul Smith Abu al-Hasan al-Shushtari (1312-1369) was a Sufi poet who was born in Guadix, northwest of Granada, Spain. As a young man he travelled to Tunisia, Algeria, Damascus and several times made the pilgrimage to Mecca. He finally settled in Egypt. He became a devotee of the Sufi Master Ibn Sab'in who was four years younger than him and was widely respected at that time. They first met in Algeria when in their thirties and later went together to Mecca and Egypt. Al-Shushtari composed two treatises on Sufism and dedicated three poems to his spiritual Master. Often when walking or riding the poet would sing his poems and play an instrument as he did so. In his latter days he had many disciples. Book excerpt: AL-MUTANABBI: LIFE & SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Abu 'l-Tayyib Ahmad ibn Husain al-Mutanabbi, (915-965 A.D.), was one of the greatest of Arabic poets (many say the greatest), was born in the town of al-Kufah in Iraq. He was the son of a water carrier who was said to be of noble and ancient southern Arabian descent. In his youth, al-Mutanabbi was educated in Syria in Damascus. He lived among the Bedouin of the Banu Qalb tribe and learnt their skills. In his youth he received his nickname 'al-Mutanabbi', meaning 'one who wants to be a prophet'. Why he was named so is unclear, but... he was the leader of a revolutionary movement and, claiming to be a prophet, led a revolt in his home-town in 932 at the age of 17. It was suppressed and he was imprisoned. During this period he began to write his first poems. R.A. Nicholson in his 'Translations of Eastern Poetry and Prose' says, "Any one who reads him in Arabic must admire the splendour of his rhetoric, the luxuriance of his imagination, and the energy and aptness of his diction; but in a translation these great qualities are overshadowed by others less pleasing to our taste, which have left their mark on the poetic style of many who wrote after him in Arabic and Persian." Al-Mutanabbi is mainly known for his many wonderful qasidas, being one of the true masters of this form. A.J. Arberry says of him... His criticism of Ash'ari Kalam, Greek logic and philosophy, monistic Sufism, Shi'i doctrines, and Christian faith have proved great obstacles to appreciating his contribution. His way of writing has also been to an extent responsible. Most of his writings are short or long responsa (fatawa) to particular questions, often recurring, put to him by different men at different times, rather than planned, systematic works on particular subjects. This makes the appreciation of his contribution somewhat difficult. Henri Laoust in France was the first to take serious notice of him. Since the publication of his Essay on the Social and Political Doctrines of Ibn Taymiyyah (1939), a few articles and books have appeared on Ibn Taymiyyah's thought, but they are far from giving any clear idea of his overall contribution to Islam, even less of assessing his role in its revival and renewal (tajdid). In fact, there has been little understanding of the concept of tajdid in Islam. This volume consists of selections from various writings of Ibn Taymiyyah included in Majmu' Fatawa Shaykh Al Islam (37 volumes) as well as some of his major works such as Minhaj as Sunnah An Nabawiyyah, Dar Ta'arud al Aql wa-An Naql, kitab Ar Rad alaa Mantaqayyin, Al-Istiqamah, and Iqtida As Sirat Al Mustaqeem. These selections will present a clearer and complete view of Ibn Taymiyyah's concept of Islamic faith, life and society. They are primarily intended to highlight his positive position and mention his criticisms and refutations of other positions only to the extent needed.
