Book excerpt: Charles Brockden Brown (1771–1810) was a key writer of the revolutionary era and early U.S. republic, known for his landmark novels and other writings in a variety of genres. The Collected Writings of Charles Brockden Brown presents all of Brown’s non-novelistic writings—letters, political pamphlets, fictions, periodical writings, historical writings, and poety—in a seven-volume scholarly set. This series’ volumes are edited to the highest scholarly standards and will bear the seal of the Modern Language Association Committee on Scholarly Editions (MLA-CSE). The American Register and Other Writings, 1807–1810,volume 6 of the series, assembles and presents for the first time Charles Brockden Brown’s writing from the final years of his life, including from his magisterial periodical project, the American Register. In this semi-annual periodical, Brown narrates the tumultuous political events of the United States and Europe amidst the Napoleonic Wars. In addition to providing the complete text of the “Prefaces” and “Annals” from the five volumes of the American Register, this volume also includes other late periodical writing by Brown and his prospectus for the unpublished “A System of General Geography.” Each edited text provides detailed information concerning publication history, provenance, and attribution, along with extensive scholarly annotation. A Historical Essay provides detailed contextualization of the geopolitical affairs in which Brown’s writing is steeped. A Textual Essay offers full bibliographical information and context for each edited text and explains editorial protocols for the volume.

Book Synopsis Remoteness Reconsidered by : Christopher Rossi
Download or read book Remoteness Reconsidered written by Christopher Rossi and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of our understanding of the world is framed from the perspective of a dominant power center, or from standard readings of historical events. The architecture of international information distribution, academic centers, and the lingua franca of international scholarly discourse also shape these stories. Remoteness Reconsidered employs the idea of remoteness as an analytical tool for viewing international law's encounter with the Americas from the unusual, peripheral perspective of the Atacama Desert. The Atacama is one of the most remote places on Earth, although that less-than-accurate perspective comes from standard historical accounts of the region, accounts that originate from the “center.” Changing the usual frame of reference leads to a reconsideration of the idea of remoteness and of the subsequent marginalization of historical narratives that influence hemispheric international relations in important ways today. Lessons about international law's encounters with neoliberalism, indigenous and human rights, and the management and extraction of mineral resources take on new significance by following a spatial turn toward the idea of remoteness as applied to the Atacama Desert.
Book Synopsis Hubert Crackanthorpe: Selected Writings by : William Greenslade
Download or read book Hubert Crackanthorpe: Selected Writings written by William Greenslade and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hubert Crackanthorpe (1870-1896) made a critically significant contribution to the evolution of the modernist short story in Britain. His unexplained death in Paris at the age of 26 cut short a highly promising literary career. The striking realism of Crackanthorpe's first collection of short stories, Wreckage (1893), followed by the psychologically complex Sentimental Studies and posthumous Last Studies (1896), together with the prose poems of Vignettes (1896), were much admired by Henry James and his contemporaries, Dowson, Johnson and Symons, as the work of a leading, innovative writer of critical Decadence. Indeed his stories combine an unrelenting realism with a conscious aestheticizing of their often troubling, bleak subject matter. As co-editor of the short-lived periodical, The Albermarle and campaigning literary journalist, Crackanthorpe was a key critical participant in central literary and artistic debates of the early 1890s: 'facts' versus 'effects' in literature; the efficacy of realism/naturalism; questions of taste, 'reticence' and the handling of controversial subject matter. This fully annotated, critical text comprises the most extensive collection to date of Crackanthorpe's writing. As well as uncollected stories, the volume includes a short story never previously published in book form. This edition also contains a selection of Crackanthorpe's critical writings and a bibliographical survey of his work.
