Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the bicentennial of Hans Christian Andersen’s birth, this collection takes Andersen out of the nursery and places him squarely in the literary pantheon. While Andersen’s tales continue to seize the imagination with their singular blend of simplicity, eccentricity, and charm, English-language readers have until now had to content themselves with inaccurate retellings and inadequate translations. Diana Crone Frank, a Danish novelist and linguist, and Jeffrey Frank, a novelist and editor at the New Yorker, offer a much-needed modern translation. In this collection are twenty-two tales that best represent Andersen’s literary legacy, including such classics as “The Little Mermaid,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “Thumbelisa,” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” as well as largely unfamiliar stories like “By the Outermost Sea.” Illuminating notes clarify references in the tales. And in an introductory essay, the Franks explore the writer and his times, placing the enigmatic and often bizarre figure of Andersen among his literary contemporaries, such as Charles Dickens and Søren Kierkegaard, with whom he crossed paths; and they bring to life Andersen’s fascinating relationship with the United States. Illustrated with the delicate and beautiful drawings that accompanied the original Danish publication, The Stories of Hans Christian Andersen will delight readers of all ages.

Book excerpt: This definitive collection of work from Hans Christian Andersen—one of the immortals of world literature—not only includes his own notes to his stories but is the only version available in trade paperback that presents Andersen's fairy tales exactly as he collected them in the original Danish edition of 1874. Recognizing the literary merit of Andersen's own simple colloquial language, which Victorian translators and their imitators very often altered to sentimentalize or vulgarize, translator Erik Haugaard has remained faithful to the original text. The fairy tales Hans Christian Andersen wrote, such as "The Snow Queen," "The Ugly Duckling," "The Red Shoes," and "The Nightingale," are remarkable for their sense of fantasy, power of description, and acute sensitivity, and they are like no others written before or since. Unlike the Brothers Grimm, who collected and retold folklore, Andersen adopted the most ancient literary forms of the fairy tale and the folktale and distilled them into a genre that was uniquely his own.

Although he wrote a broad range of work, including plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, it was his fairy tales that became culturally iconic in the Western world. His stories have inspired countless plays, ballets, and movies. In this volume the critic August Nemo selected for you seven classic tales that populated the dreams of generations: - The Little Mermaid - Brave Tin Soldier - The Princess and the Pea - The Goloshes of Fortune - The Emperor's New Clothes - The Last Dream of Old Oak - Little Tiny or Thumbelina

Book excerpt: RUDY AND BABETTE, or, Capture of The Eagle's Nest, by Hans Christian Andersen, illustrated by Helen Stratton. This book also contains 3 complimentary stories by Andersen. Towards the end of “The Ice Maiden” Andersen tells the tale of Rudy, a boy who lost both his parents and goes to live with his uncle. Rudy grows up to become a skilled mountain climber and huntsman. He falls in love with the miller's daughter, Babette, however the miller disapproves of the relationship. He gives Rudy the impossible task of climbing to the top of a dangerous mountain and bringing back a live baby eaglet. While Babette was off visiting her godmother, she catches the attention of her cousin and flirts with him, which makes Rudy jealous. They have a disagreement and she tells him to leave. On his way home, Rudy comes across a beautiful maiden who really is the Ice Maiden in disguise. He soon finds himself kissing the Ice Maiden. In his shame, he returns to Babette and begs her forgiveness. Their wedding day nears and they travel to the godmother's house to be wed. The night after their arrival Babette has an awful dream that she cheats on Rudy with her cousin. One night before the wedding, Babette decides she wants to go to a small island with just enough room for the two of them to dance. As they sit and talk, Babette notices the boat is slipping away. Rudy swims after it, but the Ice Maiden kisses him one last time and he drowns. Babette is left alone on the island crying over the death of her loved one, but nobody can hear her over the wind. ======================== Hans Christian Andersen (often referred to in Scandinavia as H. C. Andersen) was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories — called eventyr, or "fairy-tales" — express themes that transcend age and nationality. ======================== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Rudy and Babette, Switzerland, Alps, Alpine, Annette, avalanche, beautiful, bells, blue cloak, canton, cat, chamois, climb, crevasse, death, deep, eagle, eaglet, Englishman, eyes, fortune, French, Giddy, glacier, good, grandfather, great, Grindelwald, high, Ice-Maiden, Interlaken, island, journey, kiss, lake, mill, miller, mountain, mountains, nest, parlor, Rhone river, snow, spirits, Vallais, valleys, Aare river, Lake Thun, Lake Brienz, France, Italy,

This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second volume you will find a further 29 illustrated children’s stories by the master story-teller - Hans Christian Andersen. This present volume is the second of the selected stories from Hans Andersen. Together both books include what, out of a larger number, are the cream of Andersen’s “crop”. "The Ice Maiden", “The Little Mermaid” and “The Emperor’s New Clothes” set the standards for folklorists, authors and story-tellers worldwide and have all since become children’s classics. "The Sandhills of Jutland", another volume by Andersen, was pronounced by John Ruskin to be “the most perfect story” that he knew. The tales in this volume are: The Flax The Daisy The Pea Blossom The Storks The Wild Swans The Last Dream Of The Old Oak The Portuguese Duck The Snow Man The Farmyard Cock And The Weathercock The Red Shoes The Little Mermaid Buckwheat What Happened To The Thistle The Pen And The Inkstand The Teapot Soup From A Sausage Skewer What The Goodman Does Is Always Right The Old Street Lamp The Shepherdess And The Chimney Sweep The Drop Of Water The Swineherd The Metal Pig The Flying Trunk The Butterfly The Goblin And The Huckster Everything In Its Right Place The Real Princess The Emperor's New Clothes Great Claus And Little Claus The power of his tales to charm and elevate runs like a living thread through whatever he writes. In the two books, the first of which is presented here, they have met the tests and held an undiminishing popularity among the best children's books. They have set the standard, and their place in permanent literature will grow wider and more secure as time passes. Only a few children's authors will be ranked among the Immortals, and Hans Andersen is without a doubt one of them. It adds a charm to the little stories of these two volumes to know that the genial author travelled widely for a man of his time and everywhere he went he was urged to tell the tales himself. Even though he had become world famous, he did with equal measures of charm and grace in the kitchens of the humble and in the courts of nobles and palaces of kings. As was said in the preface to the first volume, wherever there are children, the stories of Hans Christian Andersen will be read and loved for a long time yet. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities by the Publisher. =============== TAGS: Hans Andersen Fairy Tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, read, school children, homes, love to read, story-teller, imagination, sweet, sad, Flax, Daisy, Pea Blossom, Storks, Wild Swans, Last Dream, Old Oak, Portuguese Duck, Snow Man, Farmyard Cock, Weathercock, Red Shoes, Little Mermaid, Buckwheat, Thistle, Pen, Inkstand, Teapot, Soup, Sausage Skewer, Goodman, Right, Old Street Lamp, Shepherdess, Chimney Sweep, Drop Of Water, Swineherd, Metal Pig, Flying Trunk, Butterfly, Goblin, Huckster, Everything, Right Place, Real, Princess, Emperor's New Clothes, Great Claus, Little Claus

It was not so, however; there was a being standing before his bed, and looking like the ghost of his deceased wife. She fixed her eyes upon him with such a kind and sad expression, just as if she wished to say something to him. The pastor raised himself in bed and stretched his arms towards her, saying, “Not even you can find eternal rest! You suffer, you best and most pious woman?”..FROM THE BOOK.
