Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Relics of Japanese Art, Vol. 1 T has not been generally recognized in the West that the famous Buddhist temples of the central provinces of Japan, especially of Kyoto, have been for centuries, and still are the custodians of ancient masterpieces of Oriental art, as important for their respective histories of culture as are the better known aesthetic treasures of European, and especially of Italian cathedrals. Since I first began to listen to these unique voices of the past, it is now fully twenty years; and again and again have I returned to the classic and pine-shaded shrines of Miyako with the same reverence and soul-hunger which Santa Croce, the Frari, and San Francesco of Assisi ever inspire. It is not in the favourite curio-shops of the ports, nor even in the private collections of the nobles, that the full depth of Chinese and Japanese art can be sounded. As in Europe, the devotion that could -rise to supreme beauty was lavished upon holy altar-pieces, the tombs of the saints, and sacred memorial offerings. Here lie embalmed forever the spirits not only of generations of artists, but of extinct schools, and of millenia of national epochs. The world is now to be con gratulated that at last, with the illustrations of the present work, it will possess the materials for this fascinating study that have heretofore been monopolized by a few favoured travellers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Relics of Japanese Art, Vol. 6 In the Kondo of Horiuii, which was cast in 607 and those of S'akyamuni and his two attendants made by Tori in 623 (see vol. Sixty years of difi'erence in the date of origin is next to nothing in the case of a work of art more than a thousand years old and it is almost impossible, even for an able expert, to discern the priority of the two simply from the style and skill in casting. The thin body and the face, and the strange form of the sleaves are somewhat in the style of Tori, and so we must not be too rash in assigning it to a later date than Tori himself, for we can never know whether these peculiarities are of Korean art or due to Indian influence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Relics of Japanese Art, Vol. 18 Of the brozne images of Buddhas, made during the time of the Six dynasties. In Count Tanaka's collection, we have shown four in the twelfth volume. We now add five more to Our series of reproductions; these being smaller in size, but more excellent in workman ship and more attractive in every way. The middle three (nos. 2 to 4 inclusive) bear inscriptions. The second one. Two Buddhas sitting side by side in one screen, represents Sakyamuni and Prabhiitamtna, and on the pedestal there is a legend running thus: On the zud day, 7th year of Tien l'ao, this image Ls prepared to secure the happiness of my deemed father and mother, by Li Ta T'ung, a follower of Buddha. T'ién Pa'o is the eponym of Weh Hsfian Ti, of the Northern Ch'i dynasty: the 7th year of that period corresponds to 556, Western calendar. When the Western gei'dynas'ty came to an end in the 3rd year of Kung T: of that dynasty; also to the year of the end of the Liang dynasty of the south, in thg lst year of Tai P'ing of Ching Ti of that-same dynasty! It also corresponds to the 7th year of Emperor Kimmel of our coun'try. The third figure, Maitreya Bodhisattda, is very attractive in the decorative design of the screen, while the attitude of tlfifigure is quite different from that of other images of the same Bodhisattva commonly seen in after times', he has a water-jar in the rigffi'fhand. The inscfiption'ofthe pedestal runs thus: On the roth day, 6th month, 2nd year of Shen Kuei, this image of M'aitreya Bodhisattva is prepared from my ardent devotion for the sake of peace in the country and for the happiness of my Six kindred families, by Lin Shih Te, a native of Tung-wu. This Slten Kuei is the eponym of Hsiao Ming T1 of the Northern Vl'ei dynasty. The 2nd year of that period corresponds to 519, to the t8th year of Tien Chien of Wu Ti of the Southern Liang dynasty, and to the I3! Year Of Emperor Keitai Of our country. The fourth image, shows that it is the figure of Avalokitesvara with a lotus - bud in the right-hand and a water-jar in the left. The inscription On the pedestal is as follows: On the 4th day. Loth month, 16th year of Tai Ho. This image is cast by Bhikshu Fui Chiao in memory of my deceased parents and for the sake of the young and old members of my family who are protected by a great number Buddhas. Tai H0 is the eponym of Hsiao Wen Ti of the Northern Wei dynasty; its r6th year'corresponds to 49-2, to the roth year of Ying Ming of Wu Ti, Southern Empire of Ch 1, and to the sth year of Emperor Ninken of our country. The firstjimage has a waiter-iar in the right-hand and a pinda in the left. The fifth image has the Chamara in the right hand (the left hand is missing); from the small' sitting images in the upper part of the screen, we readily understand that this figure of Avalokitesvara is in very old style. The first image, which has protruding busts, is like a female and this leads us to suppose that it shows this deity as a transformation of some female deity of Brahmanism. These two images (first and fifth) were probably cast at the same time as the remaining three. Perhaps during the Northern dynasty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Relics of Japanese Art, Vol. 17 In our further research, we came across an account by Prince Sanetaka Sam-6 (died 1537) from his diary, under date of l6th day, 3rd month. 8th year of Taiyei (1528) Looked over the Sutra of Causal Events (illustrated) and written by the Imperial hand of Emperor Shému: a very rare and valuable one, I thought it. The fasciculus in the Fine Art School retains the print ofa seal, which is still legible, thus: Treasure handed down in Kofukuji. Thinking from these facts that this manuscript was once possessed by the temple, K6fuku11, Nara, and in the periods Taiyei and Kyérokn (l52l - l53l) it was so much esteemed among the nobility that it was secured by the Nakayama family, we suspected that the fourth section, perhaps, would have been deposited about that time. The former half ofthe fourth section must have been lost after it was withdrawn from Nan-in, and before the latter half was recovered and came into the possession of the Art School. Some careful research may, perhaps, cause this to appear again to us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Onoe on a time, the high g priest of the Tendai sect, Kyoycn by namc (979 was reading the Vidya - matra-sastra, a treatise on Buddhist Idealism, in a hall on the Mount. The Deity of Kasuga, transforming himself into an old man, appeared before him, delighted to express his joy and respect at meeting him. He is further represented here as perfonninga dance, called the Manzairaku Joy of Ten Thousand Years on an old pine tree in the inclosure. The second relates to a meritorious priest, named Kyokwai (died in who, mcdi tating for three years in an upright attitude, while on the Otowa hill, Kyoto, prayed to be born in thc Land of Bliss. He then fell ill, owing to a disease of the legs, and not being able to stand any more, he prayed to the Deity of Kauga to cure his disease. Thereupon a lady appeared in a dream, and said to him a - I shall not abandon thee. My abode is in the West. Upon the delivery of that oracle he recovered from his illness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Relics of Japanese Art, Vol. 15 In each of the six panels there was depicted a beautiful lady standing under a tree the locks of her hair and her garments were done with feathers, but the feathers have mostly been torn off and now but little trace of them is to be seen save outlines. Some time ago, when repairing these screens, a paper was found inside of one which contained, in writing, the date 26th day, 6th month. 4th year of tempyo-shoho (august loth. From this, it is to be understood that these panels were made at some time between the 4th and the 8th years of tempyo-shoho. The faces and hands of the persons were painted in c010urs, but wherever feathers had been irsed for decorative purpose, there is nothing now but simple lines. It is probable that the trees and rocks were done in monochrome from the very first. We may distinctly trace the brushwork of these pictures. And hence get a good idea of the character of pictorial art at that time! Although it was in an undeveloped state, we are led to suppose, from the method of depicting the complex character of trees and rocks, that probably they were copied from natural obiects: while the manner of representing the fissures in the rocks, suggests the influence of landscape artists of the T'ang dynasty, China. The lady playing with a jewel-shaped ball under a tree, shows the costume of the time: in this respect, it resembles the picture of Suri-devi, reproduced in the second volume of this series, and it is to be supposed that her face shows the ideal type of female beauty during the Nara era: from the suggestion of rouge on the flee, the thin black lines of the artificial high-eyebrows, the garments, and the style of dressing the hair, we get many an interesting glimpse at the customs of that remote time. Besides this: in the catalogue, the screen is described as being made with feathers, with some square Chinese ideographs on the folding-panels, and some Chinese literary compositions, all of the same material. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Relics of Japanese Art, Vol. 2 The picture here reproduced is from the wall-painting of the se. Corner of the Kort-do (the Golden Hall). The subject is Cakra-varti Cinta-mani Avalokitesvara (see notes under the Avalokitesvaras of To-ii and ro-san-jl, Vol. I: he is called in japan, Nio-i-rin and is said to have been painted by Don-ché, a Corean priest, who was renowned as being versed in Buddhism and Confucianism, but especially for his skill in coloured paintingg. He together with a priest called Ho'iio was sent by the king of Corea to the Japanese court during the reign of sui-ito (610 and arrived in Nara. Just as the monastery of Hé-riu-ii was being completed, and before interior decorations and furnishings 'were in place. This was the time and occasion for him to exhibit his powers, and his magnificent paintings may still be seen on the walls of the Kori-do. These paintings seem to have-greatly attracted the attention of foreigners. Dr: Anderson, 'f0r instance, says that they are in their design and colouring mudh like the productions of ancient Itarian artists and that they are far superior to those of later artists. He has not only supplied the model of sacred pictures for the Kasuga school by these wall-paintings but also taught us how to manufacture paper and ink and how to use the mill stone. We are much indebted to him in both sacred and secular matters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Relics of Japanese Art, Vol. 12 Now we shall try to mention the specialization of the forms. The many don'cen't'ric halos of the fourth image are very much like those seen in the wall - pictures of Ajanta: there are some nipple-like studs projecting from the outermost. Halo. This method of treatment in a measure coincides with the serpents having five or seven heads which appear from behind the Buddhist images, overshadowing them, which are carved on the stone-railing of the Amaravati towers of Southern India. A priest of India offered a Buddhist image having the serpents pedestal decorated with flakes of gold-leaf, to Emperor Hui of the Tsin dynasty, China, in the first year of Yung-ning. From such examples, we understand that the fashion of giving to Buddhist images a back-ground of serpents, showing them seated on a serpents pedestal, like those _of Amaravati, had been already handed over to China, and then it was changed into that form of a halo at the back of the viiiiage; but the pedestal of néany ifnages has no Simhasana or lotus-flower pedestal, and does not resemble th05e of the wall-pictures of Ajanta and the stone imagesv'tfiuhd in the soutiief-fl part of'm-iddle India; but the pedestal. Is like Sumeru-asana, or a square pedestal: this rather resembles those of the images of. Gandhara. In the next place, We see that it does not follow the art of Gandhara, as we know those images had no fashion of the mystic doctriit'e -of Buddhism in the relics. The head of the image displays two varieties, such as the curled hair of Middle India, and the special, waving and crisp hair-of Gandhara, but the latter is very rate'i The way in which the drapery covers both should ers of the image, is also a special characteristic of Gandhara, and the first and the third images shown here follow this fashion: but the fourth displays the mode of Middle India, the robe coming up very nearly to the right shoulder. We do not positively know just what was the special characteristic of the drapery of each form. This, as the religion made progress in China, was naturally influenced by the art which then existed in that country. The configuration of the pedestal of the image of Sakyamuni, especially, reveals the specialty of the carving of The Six Dynasties in the matter of curving lines. The drapery of the attendant Bodhisattvas hang and balance on the two sides: this shows that the skill was not yet highly advanced. This form and the configuration of the supporting pedestal (sometimes this is the under part of the robes) and the halo, like the shape of the jewels of the image of Mai treya and the Sumeru-asana, etc., influenced our old carvings, and all the images before, during, and after Empress Suilro's era followed them. As to the features, they had already lost the mode of India, and all took the fashion of China, yet they have nothing of the gentle and meek look we see in those images that were made during the Tang dynasty: so, consequently, most of those made during the Suiko era have the same weak features.
