Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Euromech-Colloquium Nr. 165 The shell-theory development has changed its emphasis during the last two decades. Nonlinear problems have become its main motive. But the analysis was until recently predominantly devoted to shells designed for strength and stiffness. Nonlinearity is here relevant to buckling, to intensively vary able stress states. These are (with exception of some limit cases) covered by the quasi-shallow shell theory. The emphasis of the nonlinear analysis begins to shift further - to shells which are designed for and actually capable of large elastic displacements. These shells, used in industry for over a century, have been recently termedj1exible shells. The European Mechanics Colloquium 165. was concerned with the theory of elastic shells in connection with its applications to these shells. The Colloquium was intended to discuss: 1. The formulations of the nonlinear shell theory, different in the generality of kine matic hypothesis, and in the choice of dependent variables. 2. The specialization of the shell theory for the class of shells and the respective elastic stress states assuring flexibility. 3. Possibilities to deal with the complications of the buckling analysis of flexible shells, caused by the precritial perturbations of their shape and stress state. 4. Methods of solution appropriate for the nonlinear flexible-shell problems. 5. Applications of the theory. There were 71 participants the sessions were presided over (in that order) by E. Reissner, J. G. Simmonds, W. T. Koiter, R. C. Tennyson, F. A. Emmerling, E. Rarnm, E. L. Axelrad.

Book excerpt: Finite Difference Methods in Heat Transfer, Second Edition focuses on finite difference methods and their application to the solution of heat transfer problems. Such methods are based on the discretization of governing equations, initial and boundary conditions, which then replace a continuous partial differential problem by a system of algebraic equations. Finite difference methods are a versatile tool for scientists and for engineers. This updated book serves university students taking graduate-level coursework in heat transfer, as well as being an important reference for researchers and engineering. Features Provides a self-contained approach in finite difference methods for students and professionals Covers the use of finite difference methods in convective, conductive, and radiative heat transfer Presents numerical solution techniques to elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic problems Includes hybrid analytical–numerical approaches

Book excerpt: It has been ten years since I presented the paper entitled “A new model and theory on yield and failure of materials under the complex stress state” at the Sixth Conference on Mechanical Behaviour of Materials held at Kyoto, Japan in 1991. The proceedings edited by Jono and Inoue were published by Pergamon Press in 1991. At that conference Professor Murakami and I were invited to act as the chairperson and co-chairperson of a session, and I presented the paper at another session. Few days before the conference, I had given a seminar regarding the tw- shear strength theory and the unified strength theory at Nagoya Technological University. These were the first two presentations of the unified strength theory, although I had completed the research of the unified strength theory in 1990. The paper “Twin-shear strength theory and its generalization” was published in the English edition of Sciences in China, the top journal in China, in 1985. The th original generalized twin-shear strength theory was presented at the 16 International Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Congress held at Copenhagen in Denmark and MPA (MaterialPrüfungsAnstalt) at Stuttgart University, Germany in 1984. After this Congress I visited the MPA and School of Civil Engineering of Stuttgart University, and gave a seminar regarding the generalized twin-shear strength theory at MPA of Stuttgart University. Professor Otto Mohr (1835–1918) has had worked at the Stuttgart University. He was a very good professor, his lectures aroused great interest in his students.

Book excerpt: This overview of the development of continuum mechanics throughout the twentieth century is unique and ambitious. Utilizing a historical perspective, it combines an exposition on the technical progress made in the field and a marked interest in the role played by remarkable individuals and scientific schools and institutions on a rapidly evolving social background. It underlines the newly raised technical questions and their answers, and the ongoing reflections on the bases of continuum mechanics associated, or in competition, with other branches of the physical sciences, including thermodynamics. The emphasis is placed on the development of a more realistic modeling of deformable solids and the exploitation of new mathematical tools. The book presents a balanced appraisal of advances made in various parts of the world. The author contributes his technical expertise, personal recollections, and international experience to this general overview, which is very informative albeit concise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: November, 2008 Anna Schwarz, Johannes Janicka In the last thirty years noise emission has developed into a topic of increasing importance to society and economy. In ?elds such as air, road and rail traf?c, the control of noise emissions and development of associated noise-reduction techno- gies is a central requirement for social acceptance and economical competitiveness. The noise emission of combustion systems is a major part of the task of noise - duction. The following aspects motivate research: • Modern combustion chambers in technical combustion systems with low pol- tion exhausts are 5 - 8 dB louder compared to their predecessors. In the ope- tional state the noise pressure levels achieved can even be 10-15 dB louder. • High capacity torches in the chemical industry are usually placed at ground level because of the reasons of noise emissions instead of being placed at a height suitable for safety and security. • For airplanes the combustion emissions become a more and more important topic. The combustion instability and noise issues are one major obstacle for the introduction of green technologies as lean fuel combustion and premixed burners in aero-engines. The direct and indirect contribution of combustion noise to the overall core noise is still under discussion. However, it is clear that the core noise besides the fan tone will become an important noise source in future aero-engine designs. To further reduce the jet noise, geared ultra high bypass ratio fans are driven by only a few highly loaded turbine stages.
