Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Methods in Quantitative Analysis, Vol. 2 The specific gravity of a body is the weight of that body as compared with the weight of an equal volume of a standard body, which is taken as unity. In all cases of solids and liquids, this standard of unity is pure water at 60 F. 155 0. Water being taken as unity, or one, any other sub stance will be more or less than one. The results are expressed in whole numbers and decimals; the decimals are carried to the third place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Students Guide in Quantitative Analysis A portion of the following pages originally appeared in the columns of the American Chemist, under the title: "Schemes of Analyses executed in the School of Mines, Columbia College." Numerous applications for copies in book form have induced the author to publish the Schemes under a more general title. Since writing the articles the author has been called to another sphere of labor, and the circumstances which led to their compilation are explained in the following paragraphs, quoted from the prefatory remarks accompanying the original publication. "The system of instruction in Quantitative Analytical Chemistry, organized in the School of Mines, Columbia College, by Dr. C. F. Chandler, has been developed by the Assistants, who have had charge of the Laboratory for Quantitative Analysis, Mr. Alexis A. Julien, Dr. Paul Schweitzer, and the writer. The practical examples and the methods of analysis were originally selected by Prof. Chandler; the latter have been modified by the Assistants, and from time to time they have introduced new processes, conforming to the advances made in this department of chemical science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantitative Analysis Since the publication of the first edition of this book numerous changes have been made in the standardized methods of analysis of certain industrial materials, as adopted by official committees of various scientific societies. In the present edition the discussions and detailed procedure have been modified to conform to the revised methods, wherever possible. This statement applies to the analysis of coal, water, fertilizers, dairy products and insecticides. A number of other analytical methods are now described, of which may be mentioned the gravimetric determination of the chloride, sulphate and phosphate radicals and the indirect determination of the halogens; the perchlorate method for potassium; the determination of chromium and vanadium in steel and the glyoxime method for nickel in steel; the analysis of brass and of soft bearing metals; and the volumetric determination of zinc. A part of the discussion of metallography and treatment of steel has been rewritten and several new sections have been added to this portion of the book. New photomicrographs have been substituted for the old ones and about fifteen new figures have been used at various points throughout the book, the latter being the work of the author's students in Chemical Engineering, to whom grateful acknowledgment is due. Finally, a new system of chapter division has been introduced in order to give greater emphasis to the sections dealing with industrial analysis. In the process of making these changes a considerable portion of the book has been rewritten and the discussions have been amplified, in the interest of added clearness. It is hoped that these changes will serve to enhance the usefulness of the book as a college text and that the favor with which the first edition was so generously received will not be undeserved by the present edition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul A. Samuelson was the first American Nobel Laureate in economics, and the second overall. He was credited for "the scientific work through which he has developed static and dynamic economic theory and actively contributed to raising the level of analysis in economic science." That recognition is now thirty years old and Samuelson remains at work in the cutting edge of the discipline. He is also widely known for a basic textbook that became a landmark learning tool throughout the second half of the twentieth century. This excellent collegial appreciation focuses heavily on Samuelson's Foundations of Economic Analysis. In that work, and a series of brief essays, he has contributed to an integration of statics and dynamics by way of the correspondence principle. He has also combined the multiplier and accelerator mechanisms in a model of economic fluctuations; he has reformed the foundations of consumption theory by his concept of revealed preferences; he has developed or improved several major theorems within international trade; and created theories of maximum efficiency and maximum growth rate. Finally, he has clarified the role of collective goods in resource allocation. In considering the work and life of Samuelson, editor Puttaswamaiah, has assembled a worthy group of brilliant commentators. Among the analytic papers in this volume are "An essay on the Accuracy of Economic Prediction" by L.R. Klein, "Analytical Aspects of Anti-Inflation Policy" by Robert M. Solow, a paper by Vittorangelo Orati on Samuelson's linkage to Schumpeter and Keynes, "Money and Price Theory by Carlo Benetti and Jean Cartelier, and a concluding essay on "The Role of Samuelson's Economics" by Michael Emmett Brady. Most unusual in works of this kind are some strong critical statements, including a pungent examination of vanity as well as creativity in Samuelson's work. What emerges is a clear picture of a special scholar. Scholars and students will welcome it alike-a result that well fits the purpose and character of Samuelson. The festschrift has its origins in several issues of the International Journal of Applied Economics and Econometrics. Professor K. Puttaswamaiah has more than three decades of editing journals in economics. He is a member of the journal; Savings and Development issued at the University of Milan. He is author of Economic Development of Karnataka, Cost-Benefit Analysis, and Nobel Economists: Lives and Contributions.
