Book excerpt: Building codes in various jurisdictions including Canada are moving towards performance-based design approaches where a structure is designed not only to have adequate strength, but also for the required performance attributes, such as, adequate deformability. From that point of view, performance assessment of structures in the design phase plays an important role in the implementation of the above concept. The focus of this article is to study the seismic performance and torsional sensitivity of reinforced concrete shear wall buildings designed using the seismic provisions of the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC 2005) and the Canadian standard on reinforced concrete buildings (CSA-A23.3-04). The buildings considered here are of regular plan and the height is limited to what is permitted for the use of the Equivalent Static Load (ESL) method of the building code. A set of three reinforced concrete buildings of four, eight and sixteen storey heights are designed here. The buildings are assumed to be located in Vancouver and various levels of accidental mass eccentricity up to 10% as permitted in the ESL method, are considered. After the preliminary design of the buildings using the ESL method, dynamic elastic Response Spectrum Analysis "RSA" has been performed to compare the base shear and make appropriate refinement in the design as suggested in NBCC. The buildings are then analyzed using inelastic dynamic analysis with fifteen recorded accelerograms of past earthquakes. The earthquake records are selected such that the peak velocity to acceleration ratio of each record is compatible to the seismicity of Vancouver. The ground motion records are scaled to fit the design spectrum using two different methods, The performance parameters such as the demand to capacity ratios for storey drift, plastic rotation, and storey shear are extracted from the results of the inelastic dynamic analysis. The statistical quantities such as mean, standard deviation and the maximum values of the demand to capacity ratios are found to be well below the acceptable limits, while the storey shear, exceed the limit in all cases. It also is observed that none of the buildings are torsionally sensitive within the code specified range of eccentricity for which ESL method is applicable. The changes in the dynamic response due to the change in eccentricity are almost proportional within the range of eccentricity considered here. Another point to note here is that while results for the four and eight storey buildings are not very sensitive to the method of scaling of the ground motion records, for the sixteen storey building, it is not so.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Seismic Performance of Reinforced Concrete Wall Structures under High Axial Load with Particular Application to Low-to-Moderate Seismic Regions Submitted by Wong Sze Man For the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in December 2005 Hong Kong is a densely-populated city that is located in a region classified as having low-to-moderate seismicity. Previous studies suggest that it is not unlikely for Hong Kong to be subject to a far-field, large magnitude earthquake. Considering the potential economic and property loss to the territory, proper assessments of buildings in Hong Kong's urban area are urgently required. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls, a common structural element adopted in the construction of medium-rise residential buildings in Hong Kong. This thesis has identified axial load ratio (ALR) as an indispensable parameter for consideration in seismic performance evaluation. The ALRs in the wall elements of the medium-rise residential buildings were investigated. It was found that the ratios ranged up to 0.3 and 0.45 for shear-wall and core-wall buildings respectively. Effective yield curvature was extensively analyzed using a FORTRAN program. An empirical model, which is valid to the practical range of ALRs concluded, is proposed to provide quick estimations to the effective yield curvature that are useful for assessment purposes when combined with the Yield Point Spectra (YPS). The behaviour of RC walls fabricated in accordance with common construction practice in Hong Kong was critically examined experimentally. In addition to conventional instrumentations, the optical Digital Speckle Correlation Method (DSCM) was adopted in the study. The effects of ALR and confinement on failure mode, ductility capacity, strength degradation, and axial load capacity were investigated. It was found that the effect of ALR should not be neglected in a seismic assessment. In addition, the performance of the specimens before and after the retrofitting measures was also compared, and advantages of using the DSCM were identified. Analysis of the research findings prompts the need for a revision of the performance level criteria that cater for high ALR scenarios. Based on the revised criteria, a case study was conducted, which compared the seismic capacity and demand on YPS. Displacement ductility demands were negligible when ALRs were low, but high ALR cases were accompanied by an Immediate Occupancy or Life Safety performance level. When the importance of displacement, however, became better appreciated, it was attempted to modify the existing force-based approach in order to include considerations of displacement, rather than to totally reconsider the procedure on a more rational basis. In the last decade, then, several researchers started pointing out this inconsistency, proposing displacement-based approaches for earthquake engineering evaluation and design, with the aim of providing improved reliability in the engineering process by more directly relating computed response and expected structural performance. The main objective of this report is to summarize, critically review and compare the displacement - based approaches proposed in the literature, thus favouring code implementation and practical use of rational and reliable methods. Chapter 2 Seismic performance and design objectives of this report introduces concepts of performance levels, seismic hazard representation, and the coupling of performance and hazard to define performance objectives. In fact, for displacement analysis to be relevant in the context of performance-based design, the structural engineer must select appropriate performance levels and seismic loadings. A critical review of some engineering limit states appropriate to the different performance levels is therefore proposed. In chapter 3 Conceptual basis for displacement-based earthquake resistant design, the fundamental principles associated with displacement of the ground during an earthquake and the effects, in terms of displacement, in the structure, are reviewed. The historical development guides the presentation with a review of general linear and nonlinear structural dynamics principles, general approaches to estimate displacement, for both ground and structure, and finally a general presentation of the means to measure and judge the appropriateness of the displacements of the structure in section. Chapter 4 Approaches and procedures for displacement-based design can be somehow considered the fundamental part of the report, since a critical summary of the displacement - based approaches proposed by different researchers is presented there. Displacement - based design may require specific characterization of the input ground motion, a topic addressed in Chapter 5 Seismic input. In general, various pertinent definitions of input motion for non-code format analysis are included, while peak ground parameters necessary for code base shear equations are only addressed as needed for the definition of motion for analysis. Chapter 6 Displacement capacity of members and systems addresses the fundamental problem of evaluating the inelastic displacement capacity of reinforced concrete members and realistic values of their effective cracked stiffness at yielding, including effects of shear and inclined cracking, anchorage slip, bar buckling and of load cycling. In Chapter 7 Application and evaluation of displacement-based approaches, some of the many different displacement based design procedures briefly introduced in Chapter 4 are applied to various case studies, identifying and discussing the difficulties a designer may encounter when trying to use displacement based design. Results for five different case studies designed in accordance with eight different displacement based design methods are presented. Although in general case studies are considered a useful but marginal part of a state of the art document, in this case it has to be noted that chapter 7 is possibly the most innovative and fundamental part of the whole report. The conclusions of chapter 7 are the fundamental and essential conclusions of the document and allow foreseeing a bright future for displacement - based design approaches. The state-of-art report has been elaborated over a period of 4 years by Task Group 7.2 Displacement-based design and assessment of fib Commission 7Seismic design, a truly international team of experts, representing the expertise and experience of all the important seismic regions of the world. This wall system permits self-centering with high levels of energy dissipation and significant reduction of permanent deformations. Conventional steel-reinforced concrete shear walls were designed for a prototype 10-storey office building, assuming seismic design scenarios in eastern and western Canada. Equivalent hybrid SMA-steel reinforced concrete shear walls were defined following the designed cross-sections of the conventional walls. Full-scale, 2-D finite element models of the walls were developed and subjected to nonlinear, static and time-history analyses, employing historical and simulated ground motion records for the latter. The numerical results confirmed the superior self-centering capacity of the hybrid SMA-steel reinforced walls, showing potential to optimize the seismic performance of reinforced concrete buildings, particularly in high seismic zones, by controlling residual deformations and reducing damage.

Due to the infrastructure's increasing decay, frequently combined with the need for structural upgrading to meet more stringent design requirements (especially against seismic loads), structural retrofitting is becoming more and more important and receives today considerable emphasis throughout the world. In response to this need, a major part of the fib Model Code 2005, currently under development, is being devoted to structural conservation and maintenance. More importantly, in recognition of the importance of the seismic threat arising from existing substandard buildings, the first standards for structural upgrading to be promoted by the international engineering community and by regulatory authorities alike are for seismic rehabilitation of buildings. This is the case, for example, of Part 3: Strengthening and Repair of Buildings of Eurocode 8 (i. e. of the draft European Standard for earthquake-resistant design), and which is the only one among the current (2003) set of 58 Eurocodes attempting to address the problem of structural upgrading. It is also the case of the recent (2001) ASCE draft standard on Seismic evaluation of existing buildings and of the 1996 Law for promotion of seismic strengthening of existing reinforced concrete structures in Japan. As noted in Chapter 1 of this Bulletin, fib - as CEB and FIP did before - has placed considerable emphasis on assessment and rehabilitation of existing structures. The present Bulletin is a culmination of this effort in the special but very important field of seismic assessment and rehabilitation. It has been elaborated over a period of 4 years by Task Group 7.1 Assessment and retrofit of existing structures of fib Commission 7 Seismic design, a truly international team of experts, representing the expertise and experience of all the important seismic regions of the world. In the course of its work the team had six plenary two-day meetings: in January 1999 in Pavia, Italy; in August 1999 in Raleigh, North Carolina; in February 2000 in Queenstown, New Zealand; in July 2000 in Patras, Greece; in March 2001 in Lausanne, Switzerland; and in August 2001 in Seattle, Washington. In October 2002 the final draft of the Bulletin was presented to public during the 1st fib Congress in Osaka. It was also there that it was approved by fib Commission 7 Seismic Design.
