Book excerpt: NOUS PLACONS NOTRE ETUDE DANS LE CADRE DE LA SEGMENTATION 2D ET 3D EN IMAGERIE CARDIO-VASCULAIRE D'UNE STRUCTURE BIEN DEFINIE: UNE CAVITE SANGUINE ENTOUREE PAR UNE PAROI MUSCULAIRE. SI D'UN POINT DE VUE THEORIQUE, LES DEUX MILIEUX, SANG ET PAROI, SONT CONSIDERES COMME QUASI-HOMOGENES, IL EN EST RAREMENT AINSI. TOUTES LES MODALITES D'IMAGERIE (SCANNER X, IRM, IMAGERIE ULTRASONORE) RENCONTRENT CES DEUX PROBLEMES, QUI SONT DIFFEREMMENT CARACTERISES SELON L'AGENT PHYSIQUE EMPLOYE. NOUS ETABLISSONS UN MODELE 3D DE DEFORMATION DE SURFACE POUR RECONSTRUIRE LE VOLUME CARDIAQUE, A PARTIR DE COUPES D'IMAGES 2D, OU ANALYSER DYNAMIQUEMENT LES SEQUENCES D'IMAGES 2D. AFIN DE MIEUX PRENDRE EN COMPTE LES PROBLEMES LIES A L'ESTIMATION DE L'INTERFACE ENTRE LA CAVITE ET LA PAROI, LA SEGMENTATION EST REALISEE A UN NIVEAU LOCAL, REGIONAL ET GLOBAL. CETTE PROCEDURE SE DECOMPOSE EN DEUX PROCESSUS D'EQUILIBRE COMPLEMENTAIRES ET SEQUENTIELS. D'UNE PART, UN PROCESSUS DE DEFORMATION DISCRET DEPLACE UN POINT, INDEPENDAMMENT DES AUTRES POINTS DU MAILLAGE, VERS UN MINIMUM LOCAL DU CHAMP EXTERNE ET, D'AUTRE PART, UN PROCESSUS DE STABILISATION CONTINU, PAR UNE INTERPOLATION SPLINE BICUBIQUE, EVALUE SI LE POINT DEPLACE CORRESPOND A UN MINIMUM REGIONAL DU CHAMP EXTERNE (SEUIL DE DISTANCE DE CHANFREIN). LA CONVERGENCE DU PROCESSUS DE SEGMENTATION EST OBTENUE PAR STABILISATION DE MORCEAUX DE CONTOURS DANS LE CAS 2D ET PAR STABILISATION DE SURFACES ELEMENTAIRES EN 3D. LE COMPROMIS ENTRE LA FORME ET LA NATURE DE L'OBJET DEPEND DES POIDS RELATIFS ENTRE LES DIFFERENTS TERMES D'ENERGIE. CEUX-CI SONT CONTROLES DE MANIERE ADAPTATIVE, PAR UN CRITERE DE CONCAVITE LIE A LA GEOMETRIE DU SYSTEME CARDIO-VASCULAIRE. UNE VALIDATION 2D ET DES RESULTATS 3D SUR DIFFERENTS VOLUMES CARDIO-VASCULAIRES, ONT PERMIS D'OBTENIR DES RESULTATS SATISFAISANTS POUR LESQUELS LA VARIATION DES PARAMETRES EST RELATIVEMENT FAIBLE ET REND PAR CONSEQUENT LE PROCESSUS DE SEGMENTATION ROBUSTE

Dagmar Kainmueller introduces methods for accurate fully automatic segmentation of anatomical structures in 3D medical image data. The author’s core methodological contribution is a novel deformation model that overcomes limitations of state-of-the-art Deformable Surface approaches, hence allowing for accurate segmentation of tip- and ridge-shaped features of anatomical structures. As for practical contributions, she proposes application-specific segmentation pipelines for a range of anatomical structures, together with thorough evaluations of segmentation accuracy on clinical image data. As compared to related work, these fully automatic pipelines allow for highly accurate segmentation of benchmark image data.

Book excerpt: Deformable models have been a classic approach to image segmentation, and they have been used with considerable success, e.g. in segmenting medical images. While traditional deformable models rely on local image gradient information, it is important to incorporate additional contextual constraints, in order to achieve robustness to noise, intensity inhomogeneity, and locally weak boundary. In this thesis, we propose three new deformable model based segmentation methods to extract contour, surface and tubular structures from 2D and 3D medical images. First, 2D and 3D Active Volume Models (AVM) are proposed, which can integrate region information. To further improve the robustness and accuracy of AVM, we propose Multiple-Surface Active Volume Model (MSAVM), which is able to incorporate high-level geometric spatial constraints among multiple objects. Second, to segment 3D objects containing complex surfaces or high curvature regions, we propose a 3D Laplacian-driven parametric deformable model, which preserves model mesh quality by using a novel internal force derived from mesh Laplacian. Third, to segment coronary arteries, we propose 4D parametric deformable curves aiming to extract the vessels' centerlines and corresponding radii simultaneously. We present both qualitative and quantitative validation experiments for all three proposed methods.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Building accurate representations of the surfaces of bones in 3D medical images is an important task in many computer-assisted surgery procedures. We first present a survey of the existing solutions to this problem. Then, we give the results of experiments on new 2D and 3D deformable models. We propose to maximize the correlation of raw image values along contours parallel to the surface of bones. We also propose new representations of deformable contours: an orientation-based representation for 2D contours, and an implicit representation using 4D splines for 3D contours. We finally present some results of subvoxel segmentation of bone surfaces."

Book excerpt: This book contains the written contributions to the program of the First In ternational Conference on Computer Vision, Virtual Reality, and Robotics in Medicine (CVRMed'95) held in Nice during the period April 3-6, 1995. The articles are regrouped into a number of thematic sessions which cover the three major topics of the field: medical image understanding, registration problems in medicine, and therapy planning, simulation and control. The objective of the conference is not only to present the most innovative and promising research work but also to highlight research trends and to foster dialogues and debates among participants. This event was decided after a preliminary successful symposium organized in Stanford in March 1994 by E. Grimson (MIT), T. Kanade (CMU), R. Kikinis and W. Wells (Chair) (both at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital), and myself (INRIA). We received 92 submitted full papers, and each one was evaluated by at least three members of the Program Committee, with the help of auxiliary reviewers. Based on these evaluations, a representative subset of the Program Committee met to select 19 long papers, 29 regular papers, and 27 posters. The geographical repartition of the contributions is the following: 24 from European countries (other than France), 23 contributions from France, 20 from Northern America (USA and Canada), and 8 from Asia (Japan and Singapore).
