Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, Democrats and Republicans each have received about fifty percent of the votes and controlled about half of the government, but this has not resulted in policy deadlock. Despite highly partisan political posturing, the policy regime has been largely moderate. Incremental, yet substantial, policy innovations such as welfare reform; deficit reduction; the North American Free Trade Agreement; and the deregulation of telecommunications, banking, and agriculture have been accompanied by such continuities as Social Security and Medicare, the maintenance of earlier immigration reforms, and the persistence of many rights-based policies, including federal affirmative action. In Seeking the Center, twenty-one contributors analyze policy outcomes in light of the frequent alternation in power among evenly divided parties. They show how the triumph of policy moderation and the defeat of more ambitious efforts, such as health care reform, can be explained by mutually supporting economic, intellectual, and political forces. Demonstrating that the determinants of public policy become clear by probing specific issues, rather than in abstract theorizing, they restore the politics of policymaking to the forefront of the political science agenda. A successor to Martin A. Levin and Marc K. Landy’s influential The New Politics of Public Policy (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1995), this book will be vital reading for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in political science and public policy, as well as a resource for scholars in both fields.

The 'Centre' is distant and unknown to most Australians, yet has become a symbol of the country. This exciting book, highly illustrated in full colour, reveals the singular impact that the desert, both geographical and metaphorical, has had on Australian culture. At the heart of the book is the profound relationship that Aboriginal Australians have with the desert, and the complex ways in which they have been seen by white people in this context.

Book excerpt: Seeking Center, A collection of Poems is a mandala of one writer's consciousness. Informed by a love of art, nature and a vivid dream life, Joan Gelfand's first poetry collection is a deciphering of the mysterious signs encountered on the road of life. The collection is in four sections. In "Museum Pieces" we are taken into a world where the visual arts are read not for technical ability but for overall effect and meaning. "Music/Dream Series" delights the imagination with a series of dreams about music and love. "Heritage" explores family ties and inter-generational connections. In the final section, "In the World," Joan shares real world experiences born of exotic travels and the simple adventures of daily living in a voice that is both accessible and inspiring."Joan Gelfand's poems are simultaneously accessible and complex a rare combination." They are the record of a consciousness which remains alive to its own struggles and contradictions and which seeks to recreate the author's deep Jewish heritage: "a music of Diaspora, a music of wandering, a music of passion and yearning," yet also, "a music of joy." ("The Rider")."That these edgy poems avoid sentimentality is a testimony not only to Ms. Gelfand's 'metronomic irregularity' ("Two Poems for Eva Hesse") her insistence that meaning is primary but to the sharp, jagged, always intelligent quality of her awareness: 'One hand, one fragment, one piece of nothing,/Taking the hand of the other, and leading.' ("Collage Poem.") Jack Foley, poet/author (Books include: "Some Songs by Georges Brassens," "O Powerful Western Star," "New Poetry from California: Dead/Requiem.") Mr. Foley is the host of a weekly radio program, "Cover to Cover/World Literature" aired on KPFA."An amazing collection! A rare opportunity to gaze into the poet's soul through the window of her work."Joan Reinhardt Reiss, Environmental Health Advocate"Exuberance, a true emotional honesty and a light touch with humor kept me reading Ms. Gelfand's poems. The energetic spirit of the poems give swing, and swirl to the form." Zoketsu Norman Fischer, poet/author/teacher, and former Abbott of the San Francisco Zen Center. Mr. Fischer's books include "Jerusalem Moonlight," "Taking our Places," and "the Psalms" founder "Everyday Zen Meditation Center.""Ms. Gelfand's universe is wide, encompassing the parallel worlds of dreams and life lived in a fast-changing world. With a poet's eye and a seeker's intention, Gelfand teases out the sacred, the beauty, and the humor in her experience as a dreamer, an artist, a mother."Dr. Debra Condren, Ph.D., Founder: Women's Business Alliance, President, Manhattan Business Coaching, author, "Naked Ambition."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking Eden promotes an awareness of, and appreciation for, Georgia’s rich garden heritage. Updated and expanded here are the stories of nearly thirty designed landscapes first identified in the early twentieth-century publication Garden History of Georgia, 1733–1933. Seeking Eden records each garden’s evolution and history as well as each garden’s current early twenty-first-century appearance, as beautifully documented in photographs. Dating from the mid-eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries, these publicly and privately owned gardens include nineteenth-century parterres, Colonial Revival gardens, Country Place–era landscapes, rock gardens, historic town squares, college campuses, and an urban conservation garden. Seeking Eden explores the significant impact of the women who envisioned and nurtured many of these special places; the role of professional designers, including J. Neel Reid, Philip Trammel Shutze, William C. Pauley, Robert B. Cridland, the Olmsted Brothers, Hubert Bond Owens, and Clermont Lee; and the influence of the garden club movement in Georgia in the early twentieth century. Book excerpt: In this dramatic Civil War story, a courageous enslaved fugitive teams with a cunning Union general to save a Union fort from the Confederates–and triggers the end of slavery in the United States. This is the first children's nonfiction book about a Black unsung hero who remains relevant today and to the Black Lives Matter movement. On the night Virginia secedes from the Union, three enslaved men approach Fortress Monroe. Knowing that Virginia's secession meant they would be separated from their families and sent farther south to work for the Confederacy, the men decided to plead for sanctuary. And they were in luck. The fort's commander, Benjamin Butler, retained them--and many more that followed--by calling them "contraband of war." Butler depended on the contrabands to provide information about the Confederates. He found the perfect partner in George Scott, one of the contrabands, whose heroism saved the fort from enemy hands. And, it was the plight of the contrabands that convinced President Lincoln that slavery MUST be abolished and inspired him to write his Emancipation Proclamation, ending slavery in the rebellious states.

Book excerpt: These intimate stories of South Indian immigrants and the families they left behind center women’s lives and ask how women both claim and surrender power—a stunning debut collection from an O. Henry Prize winner Traveling from Pittsburgh to Eastern Washington to Tamil Nadu, these stories about dislocation and dissonance see immigrants and their families confront the costs of leaving and staying, identifying sublime symmetries in lives growing apart. In “Malliga Homes,” selected by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for an O. Henry Prize, a widow in a retirement community glimpses her future while waiting for her daughter to visit from America. In "No. 16 Model House Road," a woman long subordinate to her husband makes a choice of her own after she inherits a house. In "Nature Exchange," a mother grieving in the wake of a school shooting finds an unusual obsession. In "A Life in America," a professor finds himself accused of having exploited his graduate students. Sindya Bhanoo’s haunting stories show us how immigrants’ paths, and the paths of those they leave behind, are never simple. Bhanoo takes us along on their complicated journeys where regret, hope, and triumph appear in disguise.

Book excerpt: The U.S. health care system is the most expensive in the world by a considerable margin, yet health indicators are among the worst in the developed world. Seeking Value: Balancing Cost and Quality in Psychiatric Care, a comprehensive volume by the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry's Mental Health Services Committee, examines the factors that have contributed to this disparity and offers a holistic vision for health care reform--one in which the psychiatric profession plays a pivotal role. From cost consciousness in the prescribing of medications and forming alliances with other health professionals to rethinking the way health care is financed and efforts to eliminate counterproductive incarceration practices, this guide outlines individual, systemic, and sociopolitical interventions that will position readers to effect substantive change both in the short term and in the long term. Beyond spurring thought and conversation around how to improve value in the services the psychiatric profession provides and the systems in which it operates, this book will equip those looking to develop a concrete advocacy agenda and the strategies needed to see it realized.

Book excerpt: During the 1970s todays Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung, BMBWF) supported the founding of the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and the Austrian Chair at Stanford University in California. These foundings were the initial incentives for the worldwide `spreading' of similar institutions; currently, nine Centers for Austrian and Central European Studies exist in seven countries on three continents. The funding of the Ministry enables to connect senior scholars with young scholars, to help young PhD students, to participate in and to benefit from the scientific connection of experienced researchers, and to get in touch with the national scientific community by `sniffing scientific air', as the Austrians like to say. Furthermore, it aims to avoid prejudices, and to spread a better understanding and knowledge about Austria and Central Europe by promoting scientific exchange.

If you're longing to become more attentive to God--to listen to him, know his voice and experience his love, spiritual direction can point the way. In Seeking God Together, experienced spiritual director Alice Fryling offers a unique introduction specifically for group spiritual direction: a place where individuals can experience what it means to be listened to and loved by others, so that they can learn to listen more attentively to God in their daily lives and be used by God. Out of her years of being both director and directee, Fryling offers practical, step-by-step guidance for those who would like to start, lead or participate in group spiritual direction. Her book will help you know what to expect and fully equip you for the different aspects of the group experience, including learning to listen to God, using Scripture in a group, navigating different personalities, setting group expectations and asking life-giving questions. She also provides an appendix with opening exercises for use in your meetings together. "The intentional goal of group spiritual direction," Alice writes, "is to help each participant become more aware of God in their lives, for the sake of others. Spiritual direction leads you to an awakening of the soul." The Spirit is speaking to you and to others. Here is a book to help you and a group of soul friends listen for and with each other as you seek God together.

Book excerpt: Two popular American Buddhist teachers provide an overview of insight meditation, offering a “skillful blend of pragmatic instruction, psychological insight, and perennial wisdom” (Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence) In Seeking the Heart of Wisdom, Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield present the central teachings and practices of insight meditation in a clear and personal language. The path of insight meditation is a journey of understanding our bodies, our minds, and our lives, of seeing clearly the true nature of experience. The authors guide the reader in developing the openness and compassion that are at the heart of this spiritual practice. For those already treading the path, as well as those just starting out, this book will be a welcome companion along the way. Among the topics covered are: • The hindrances to meditation—ranging from doubt and fear to painful knees—and skillful means of overcoming them • How compassion can arise in response to the suffering we see in our own lives and in the world • How to integrate a life of responsible action and service with a meditative life based on non-attachment Useful exercises are presented alongside the teachings to help readers deepen their understanding of the subjects.
