Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aeronautics industry is presently aiming for faster design cycles and shorter time to market of new aircraft. It is looking at the same time for improved aerodynamic performance, for evident competitive reasons. Advanced, computer based design systems, including fast and reliable numerical flow solvers, have been developed in the last decade including new turbulence models. On the experimental side, measurement techniques in general have also been improved significantly, however the data evaluation process remains still very time consuming, and unsteady effects and turbulence are often not being captured with sufficient accuracy and detail. The development of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) has helped to improve the analysis of the flow fields. After investigations in laboratory scale wind tunnels, a joint initiative on PIV research, by the European Aerospace Research Establishments, within GARTEUR have enabled a wide breakthrough of this new technology in Europe. Within the Research Framework Program of the European Union, the joint research project EUROPIV aimed to apply PIV technology to problems of industrial interest.

Book excerpt: Results from several applications of particle image velocimetry (PIV) to unsteady flows at a laboratory scale have been published, and commercial products are now available for more general laboratory use, but for certain industrially important applications, reliable equipment is often available only from in-house research and development teams. This PIV handbookis intended to transfer know-how from PIV development laboratories to end-users in industry and universities. The book discusses the scientific and technical aspects required to set up a PIV system, allows users to assess the problems involved in the application of PIV, and enables them to design, optimize, and use PIV systems to meet their special needs.

Book excerpt: Particle image velocimetry, or PIV, refers to a class of methods used in experimental fluid mechanics to determine instantaneous fields of the vector velocity by measuring the displacements of numerous fine particles that accurately follow the motion of the fluid. Although the concept of measuring particle displacements is simple in essence, the factors that need to be addressed to design and implement PIV systems that achieve reliable, accurate, and fast measurements and to interpret the results are surprisingly numerous. The aim of this book is to analyze and explain them comprehensively.

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of a new imaging approach for simultaneous multi-phase and multi-constituent velocity measurements is the main focus of this research. The proposed approach is based on the use of a single off-the-shelf colour camera which will enable simultaneous imaging of phases/constituents which are colourtagged using fluorescent droplets and multi-wavelength illumination. Highly efficient florescent tracers used to seed the constituents are presented and their visibility in full field imaging experiments is evaluated. A commonly found problem in experimental systems using laser illumination, known as flare, is discussed and the application of the developed fluorescent tracers for its reduction is presented. A strong focus of the imaging approach proposed is its flexibility and simplicity allowing its extension to stereoscopic imaging to obtain simultaneous multi-phase/constituent 3-component measurements with the addition of a second imaging camera. Proof of principle experiments with spatially separated and well mixed flows are presented for which successful phase discrimination is obtained and the uncertainty of the measurements is estimated. The imaging system developed is applied for simultaneous air and fuel velocimetry measurements in a Gasoline Direct Injection spray for which a more detailed understating of the interaction mechanisms is required to generate improved designs. The modified imaging system and experimental setup are presented and previously unavailable simultaneous air/fuel 2 and 3-component velocity fields are presented and analysed.

Book excerpt: This open access book, published in the Soft and Biological Matter series, presents an introduction to selected research topics in the broad field of flowing matter, including the dynamics of fluids with a complex internal structure -from nematic fluids to soft glasses- as well as active matter and turbulent phenomena. Flowing matter is a subject at the crossroads between physics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, biology and earth sciences, and relies on a multidisciplinary approach to describe the emergence of the macroscopic behaviours in a system from the coordinated dynamics of its microscopic constituents. Depending on the microscopic interactions, an assembly of molecules or of mesoscopic particles can flow like a simple Newtonian fluid, deform elastically like a solid or behave in a complex manner. When the internal constituents are active, as for biological entities, one generally observes complex large-scale collective motions. Phenomenology is further complicated by the invariable tendency of fluids to display chaos at the large scales or when stirred strongly enough. This volume presents several research topics that address these phenomena encompassing the traditional micro-, meso-, and macro-scales descriptions, and contributes to our understanding of the fundamentals of flowing matter. This book is the legacy of the COST Action MP1305 “Flowing Matter”.

Book excerpt: We will develop Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) as a viable turbulence research tool at a near-wall flow facility (glycerin tunnel). The PIV technique is used to study the influence of controlled disturbances on the fluid structure in the very near wall region and compare these results with those from an ongoing LDA study. A PIV system may be conveniently separated into two parts: an image acquisition system and an image interrogation system. The image acquisition system is now operational, while the image acquisition system is still under development. The system consists of a small Helium-Neon laser and the associated optics needed for picture illumination and transformation, an x-y traversing system for accurate slide positioning during interrogation, a CCD camera and an image monitor. The interrogation system optically transforms a laser illumination image and then uses a Young's fringe pattern based technique to analyze the image and reconstruct the velocity field. This interrogation system is tied to a Swan 386 microcomputer and established that all the hardware and software functions properly.
