The present desire to maintain a continuous forest cover also makes the shelterwood or seed tree method an attractive approach to regener ating even-aged ponderosa pine (pinus ponderosa) stands and increases interest in frequency and size of ponderosa pine seed cr0ps. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Self-Fertility of a Central Oregon Source of Ponderosa Pine Germination tests were conducted using seeds with full-sized embryos (i. E. Seeds with embryos greater than three quarters the length of the embryo cavity). Except for five families which had too few seeds, 100-seed lots were germinated in a commercial germinator at 30° C. Day temperature and 20° C. Night temperature with 12-hour photoperiods and thermo periods. Prior to germination, seeds were stratified for 3 weeks at 5° C. The germination test was discontinued when no germination had occurred for a period of 1 week. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sequence of events is necessary for natural regeneration in the pumice soil region: Adequate seed must be probed and distributed over the area, germination must be favored by warm and moist surface soils, daily surface temperature variation must be moderate, seedlings must survive summer drought, and weather conditions must prevent severe frost heaving the fall after germination and the next spring. This sequence does not always occur within a reasonable time after cutting, and natural regeneration is often delayed. Four possibilities are open to the land manager: (1) declare as noncommercial some severe sites such as lodgepole pine/needlegrass and lodgepole pine/bitterbrush/needlegrass plant communities on flat or basin topography; (2) depend more on a planting program; (3) leave a light slash cover on the surface after shelterwood or narrow strip cutting; and (4) leave a shelterwood on the area after a more thorough slash treatment and be willing to wait much longer than 5 years for natural regeneration. Some problems now exist in obtaining good lodgepole planting stock. Also the slash cover does not guarantee success of natural regeneration and option 3 might turn into option 4.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genetic Variation and Seed Transfer Guidelines for Ponderosa Pine in the Ochoco and Malheur National Forests of Central Oregon Adaptive genetic variation in seed and seedling traits was evaluated for 280 families from 220 locations. Factor scores from three principal components were related by multiple regression to latitude, longitude, elevation, slope, and aspect of the seed source, and by classification analysis to seed zone and elevation band in seed zone. Location variance was significant but not large. Multiple regression equations explained less than 50 percent of location variance. Slope-aspect variables were important. Keywords: Pinus ponderosa, seedlings, breeding zones, provenance, genetic variation, adaptive variation, genetic diversity. Book excerpt: Research interest in the forests of Oregon and Washington east of the Cascade Range can be traced back to 1897, when Fredrick V. Coville of the Division of Forestry, U.S. Department of Agriculture, reconnoitered the Cascade Range Forest Reserve to report on forest growth and sheep grazing there in an 1898 report. Subsequent forest survey in the late 1890s and early 1900s was stimulated by anticipation of the timber boom that would follow arrival of a railroad. In 1908, Gifford Pinchot's new Forest Service sent young Thornton Taft Munger to study the encroachment of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.) on the more valuable ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws.) stands. By the end of the year, Munger was in charge of the North Pacific District's one-man Section of Silvics, which evolved to become the Pacific Northwest Forest Experiment Station in 1924 with him at the helm. The forest research effort east of the Cascade Range picked up speed with establishment in 1931 of the Pringle Falls Experimental Forest to research the ecologically and economically viable silvicultural systems that would convert the stagnant old-growth forests into more-productive secondgrowth forests. During the ensuing six and one-half decades, a small group of Forest Service researchers and their university counterparts working at the experimental forest and, beginning in 1963, the Bend Silviculture Laboratory, pioneered and pursued the practical silvicultural research that both led and responded to the evolution of their science.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ponderosa and Lodgepole Pine Seedling Bud Burst Varies With Lift Date and Cultural Practices in Idaho Nursery Springtime warming allows for trees to break dormancy and begin growth. Figure 4 also shows the cumulative high temperatures before the two spring lifts. This summary of temperatures does not tell us what the requirements are for bud burst. It does show us the temperatures that have made the lodgepole pine seedling tops ready to grow immediately upon exposure to favorable conditions, on March 18. By April 8 they were beginning to grow ih-the nursery bed. We did not lift any trees between November 26 and March 18 because of frozen soil. When the frost finally left the ground in mid-march, the lodgepole seedlings broke bud very quickly in the greenhouse. Within 15 days nearly 100 percent of the trees broke bud, while in late November it took 45 days to achieve the same amount of bud burst. Three weeks later the seedlings were so close to breaking bud in the nursery bed that 14 percent did break bud in the time period between lifting and when they were placed in the greenhouse. This indicates that the lodgepole seedlings were coming out of dormancy before the spring lifts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "A tale of diversity within our damaged landscapes, The Mushroom at the End of the World follows one of the strangest commodity chains of our times to explore the unexpected corners of capitalism. Here, we witness the varied and peculiar worlds of matsutake commerce: the worlds of Japanese gourmets, capitalist traders, Hmong jungle fighters, industrial forests, Yi Chinese goat herders, Finnish nature guides, and more. These companions also lead us into fungal ecologies and forest histories to better understand the promise of cohabitation in a time of massive human destruction."--Publisher's description.

Billings notes in his chapter in this book. the development of physiological ecology can be traced back to the very beginnings of the study of ecology it is clear that the modern development of this field in North America is due in the large part to the efforts of Billings alone. The foundation that Billings laid in the late 1950s came from his own studies on deserts and subsequently arctic and alpine plants, and also from his enormous success in instilling enthusiasm for the field in the numerous students attracted to the plant ecology program at Duke University. Billings' own studies provided the model for subsequent work in this field. Physiological techniques. normally confined to the laboratory. were brought into the field to examine processes under natural environmental conditions. These field studies were accompanied by experiments under controlled conditions where the relative impact of various factors could be assessed and further where genetic as opposed to environmental influences could be separated. This blending of field and laboratory approaches promoted the design of experiments which were of direct relevance to understanding the distribution and abundance of plants in nature. Physiological mechanisms were studied and assessed in the context of the functioning of plants under natural conditions rather than as an end in itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree-ring dating (dendrochronology) is a method of scientific dating based on the analysis of tree-ring growth patterns. As author James Speer notes, trees are remarkable bioindicators. Although there are other scientific means of dating climatic and environmental events, dendrochronology provides the most reliable of all paleorecords. Dendrochronology can be applied to very old trees to provide long-term records of past temperature, rainfall, fire, insect outbreaks, landslides, hurricanes, and ice storms--to name only a few events. This comprehensive text addresses all of the subjects that a reader who is new to the field will need to know and will be a welcome reference for practitioners at all levels. It includes a history of the discipline, biological and ecological background, principles of the field, basic scientific information on the structure and growth of trees, the complete range of dendrochronology methods, and a full description of each of the relevant subdisciplines. Individual chapters address the composition of wood, methods of field and laboratory study, dendroarchaeology, dendroclimatology, dendroecology, dendrogeomorphology, and dendrochemistry. The book also provides thorough introductions to common computer programs and methods of statistical analysis. In the final chapter, the author describes "frontiers in dendrochronology," with an eye toward future directions in the field. He concludes with several useful appendixes, including a listing of tree and shrub species that have been used successfully by dendrochronologists. Throughout, photographs and illustrations visually represent the state of knowledge in the field.
