This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall results of this study show that regardless of tree canopy cover, cerrado vegetation types are limited in seeds and seedings of woody species, but these limitations are higher in open than in closed savannas. Most woody species do not form persistent soil seed banks along cerrado vegetation types because their seeds are short-lived, predated and quickly removed from the ground. In addition, dispersal season and dormancy appear to control timing of gemination at the onset of the rainy season to ensure survival ofseedings in the field.

Book excerpt: The overall results of this study show that regardless of tree canopy cover, cerrado vegetation types are limited in seeds and seedlings of woody species, but these limitations are higher in open than in closed savannas. Most woody species do not form persistent soil seed banks along cerrado vegetation types because their seeds are short-lived, predated and quickly removed from the ground. In addition, dispersal season and dormancy appear to control timing of germination at the onset of the rainy season to ensure survival of seedlings in the field. In the absence of fire, establishment of woody seedlings is higher in closed than in open savannas because canopy cover mitigates the stressful environmental conditions of open savannas and thus facilitates establishment of woody seedlings. As a result, closed savannas are likely to maintain higher density of woody elements over time than open savannas. In burned savannas, however, species composition of woody and herbaceous seedlings is significantly affected because establishment of seedlings of woody and herbaceous species decreases but vegetative reproduction increases. This dissertation study indicates that interactions of early life-history stages of woody species with environmental and disturbance factors appear to play a more significant role in maintaining woody cover variations along cerrado topographic gradients than previously recognized.
Book Synopsis Savanna Woody Plants and Large Herbivores by : Peter Frank Scogings
Download or read book Savanna Woody Plants and Large Herbivores written by Peter Frank Scogings and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insights on current research and recent developments in understanding global savanna systems Increasingly recognized as synonymous with tropical grassy biomes, savannas are found in tropical and sub-tropical climates as well as warm, temperate regions of North America. Savanna Woody Plants and Large Herbivores examines the interactions between woody plants and browsing mammals in global savannas—focusing primarily on the C4 grassy ecosystems with woody components that constitute the majority of global savannas—and discusses contemporary savanna management models and applications. This much-needed addition to current research examines topics including the varying behavior of browsing mammals, the response to browsing by woody species, and the factors that inhibit forage intake. Contributions from an international team of active researchers and experts compare and contrast different savanna ecosystems, offering a global perspective on savanna functioning, the roles of soil and climate in resource availability and organism interaction, and the possible impacts of climate change across global savannas. Fills a gap in literature on savanna management issues, including biodiversity conservation and animal production Applies concepts developed in other biomes to future savanna research Complements contemporary books on savanna or large herbivore ecology Focuses on the woody component of savanna ecosystems and large herbivore interactions in savannas Compares tree-mammal systems of savannas and other eco-systems of temperate and boreal regions Provides numerous case studies of plant-mammal interactions from various savanna ecosystems Savanna Woody Plants and Large Herbivores is a valuable addition to those in fields such as ecology, wildlife and conservation biology, natural resource management, and environmental science.

Book excerpt: Seeds: Ecology, Biogeography, and Evolution of Dormancy and Germination differs from all other books on seed germination. It is an all-encompassing volume that provides a working hypothesis of the ecological and environmental conditions under which various kinds of seed dormancy have developed. It also presents information on the seed germination of more than 3500 species of trees, shrubs, vines and herbaceous species, making this a valuable reference for anyone studying germination. This book delivers information on characteristics of each type of seed dormancy, how each type of dormancy is broken in nature, and what environmental conditions are required for germination after dormancy is broken. It explains how studies should be done to distinguish persistent from transient seed banks, and covers which species should be controlled, propagated, and conserved. Seeds gives the reader insight and guidelines for doing ecologically meaningful studies on the biogeography and evolution of seed dormancy and germination in order to better understand plant reproductive strategies, life history traits, adaptations to habitats, and physiological processes. Evolutionary/phylogenetic origins and relationships of various kinds of seed dormancy A world biogeographical perspective on seed dormancy and germination Ecophysiology of seeds with each type of dormancy Critical evaluation of methodology used in soil seed bank studies Germination ecology of plants with specialized habitat and life cycle types Genetic and maternal preconditioning effects on seed dormancy and germination Guidelines for doing ecologically-meaningful germination studies
Book Synopsis The Woody Plant Seed Manual Part I by : Franklin T. Bonner
Download or read book The Woody Plant Seed Manual Part I written by Franklin T. Bonner and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-05-09 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive handbook on the seeds of trees and shrubs produced by the USDA Forest Service was USDA Misc. Pub. 654, Woody-Plant Seed Manual. The manuscript was ready for publication in 1941, but World War II delayed publication until 1948. The boom in tree planting in the 1950s and 1960s created a large demand for seeds and exposed the gaps in our knowledge concerning production and quality of seeds of woody plants in general. The 1974 Handbook proved to be very popular both in this country and abroad, leading to five printings and translations in several other languages. More than a quarter-century after its publication, however, numerous advances in tree seed technology have dictated that a new revision is needed; the result is the current volume. Part I contains information on how to get seeds and raise seedlings. Get Your Copy Now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The massive grasslands of Brazil -- known as the cerrados -- which cover roughly a quarter of its land surface and are among the most threatened regions in South America, have received little media attention. This book brings together leading researchers on the area to produce the first detailed account in English of the natural history and ecology of the cerrado/savanna ecosystem. Given their extent and threatened status, the richness of their flora and fauna, and the lack of familiarity with their unique ecology at the international level, the cerrados are badly in need of this important and timely work.
