Book excerpt: “Sweet and Spicy!!! Such a gem!...with every story Mrs. Lyons writes, I’m left with a smile.” Krysta Reviews “This is such an AMAZING story … compelling to read.” Reader Review Part 1 of 3; the HEA occurs in the third installment, Daring Declarations. A desperate widow dares greatly… Penniless since her husband’s demise and now ousted from her home by his indifferent heir, a young widow reaches her wits’ end—the end of her meager food stores, certainly. When her friend, a diamond of the demimonde, arranges a protector for Thea, she can do naught but agree. ’Tis that or starve. But what happens when her previously passionless existence is challenged by the titled lord who now owns her favors? The brusque, rough-around-the-edges Marquis keeps to himself, is annoyingly silent, but kisses like a dream and Thea soon falls for the mysterious man she knows nothing about… Save for his generous nature, lusty sense of humor, and the grand accommodations he’s provided. As to the man himself? Secrets abound and Thea fears she may have exchanged homelessness for heartbreak. Jane Austen fans who like to laugh out loud and always wished her fun and witty books had more heat are likely to enjoy this sweet and spicy Regency romance series told in three parts: Seductive Silence, Lusty Letters, and Daring Declarations. Seductive Silence is Book 1 of 3 the Mistress in the Making series; the HEA is in Book 3, Daring Declarations. “I recommend all three of the Mistress in the Making books to anyone who enjoys electric passion, witty humor, and a beautiful love story!” Reading Rebel Reviews “I did so enjoy reading all three books about the growing love between Thea and Daniel. Book excerpt: An ex-MI6 agent is out to rescue a woman from his past who was kidnaped by the mob in this thriller from the CWA Steel Dagger Award–winning author of Firefly. On a deserted road in Calabria, Greek aid worker Anastasia Cristakos is driving to visit one of the new refugee centers funded by billionaire Denis Hisami—whom she has recently married. She slows down to greet two African migrants she recognizes. Only too late does she realize they are not her friends. This is an ambush. Hours later, Anastasia wakes up on a container ship, powering eastwards across the Mediterranean. She’s been abducted as bait to get to her husband. Denis has explosive information that his Mafia enemies have already killed for—and would be willing to kill for again. To find and rescue his wife, Denis turns to former MI6 agent Paul Samson. There’s only one snag. Paul was, and probably still is, in love with Anastasia. “Porter handles every aspect of the complicated plot . . . with keen intelligence and compassion. Thriller readers looking for plenty of action, excellent writing, and credible, convincing characters will be rewarded.” —Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: Silence and Articulacy in the Poetry of Medbh McGuckian is an innovative contribution to the scholarship on Belfast poet, Medbh McGuckian. This book considers the entire oeuvre of this globally respected Irish woman writer, a member of the contemporary avant-garde with now fifteen (U.S. published) volumes and numerous individual publications. The author positions McGuckian’s oeuvre as political and historical poetry and offers a provocative new assessment of its crafted silences. This work argues that it is the muted character of McGuckian’s poems—a consequence of a defamiliarized language, the overwhelming sway of the image, and a profusion of intertextual quoting—that constitutes their agency and force. The silences are read as a response to the precarious positionality of poet and speaker at the site of “disaster” and the limits of articulacy. In line with Rukeyser’s notion of the life of poetry, the life of McGuckian's silences is located, Fadem argues, in the poems’ production, as revealed self-reflexively, and in their prolonged consumption. This oeuvre operates as a formidable counter-discourse by converting poetry's reception into a much protracted task that redistributes the temporal economy of poem and reader and disrupts the given structures of time, place, and the order of things.

Pestered by a persistent stammer, a regency lord with a keen interest in orreries and boxing-but not in talking-must find a way to woo his new mistress without words. He just hopes she can hear what's in his heart. Recently widowed and increasingly poor, Thea's been reduced to sharing her rented room with rodents and arguing over every morsel (the mice usually win). When a friend suggests an alliance of the most intimate sort, Thea's reluctantly intrigued. But given her lackluster marriage, she doubts her ability to entice an experienced man. The considerate, if quiet, Lord Tremayne attracts her mightily, so she sets aside her misgivings. That is, until Thea realizes she's about to break the cardinal rule of mistressing-that of falling for her new protector. Mistress in the Making is a fun, emotionally satisfying, well-written steamy tale told in three parts: Seductive Silence, Lusty Letters, and Daring Declarations.

Book excerpt: “Fascinating . . . A tragic saga, but at the same time it often reads like a thriller filled with acts of extraordinary courage, descriptions of dangerous journeys and a series of secret identities.”—Chicago Tribune “To this day, I don't even know what my mother's real name is.” Helen Fremont was raised as a Roman Catholic. It wasn't until she was an adult, practicing law in Boston, that she discovered her parents were Jewish—Holocaust survivors living invented lives. Not even their names were their own. In this powerful memoir, Helen Fremont delves into the secrets that held her family in a bond of silence for more than four decades, recounting with heartbreaking clarity a remarkable tale of survival, as vivid as fiction but with the resonance of truth. Driven to uncover their roots, Fremont and her sister pieced together an astonishing story: of Siberian Gulags and Italian royalty, of concentration camps and buried lives. After Long Silence is about the devastating price of hiding the truth; about families; about the steps we take, foolish or wise, to protect ourselves and our loved ones. No one who reads this book can be unmoved, or fail to understand the seductive, damaging power of secrets. Praise for After Long Silence “Poignant . . . affecting . . . part detective story, part literary memoir, part imagined past.”—The New York Times Book Review “Riveting . . . painfully authentic . . . a poignant memoir, a labor of love for the parents she never really knew.”—The Boston Globe “Mesmerizing . . . Fremont has accomplished something that seems close to impossible. She has made a fresh and worthy contribution to the vast literature of the Holocaust.”—The Washington Post Book World

Book excerpt: Mainstream public relations overvalues noise, sound and voice in public communication. But how can we explain that while practitioners use silence on a daily basis, academics have widely remained quiet on the subject? Why is silence habitually famed as inherently bad and unethical? Silence is neither separate from nor the opposite of communication. The inclusion of silence on a par with speech and non-verbal means is a vital element of any communication strategy; it opens it up for a new, complex and more reflective understanding of strategic silence as indirect communication. Drawing on a number of disciplines that see in silence what public relations academics have not yet, this book reveals forms of silence to inform public relations solutions in practice and theory. How do we manage silence? How can strategic silence increase the capacity of public relations as a change agent? Using a format of multiple short chapters and practice examples, this is the first book that discusses the concept of strategic silence, and its consequences for PR theory and practice. Applying silence to communication cases and issues in global societies, it will be of interest to scholars and researchers in public relations, strategic communications and communication studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions in this volume focus on the ways in which silence and music relate, contemplate each other and provide new avenues for addressing and gaining understanding of various realms of human endeavour. The book maps out this little-explored aspect of the sonic arena with the intention of defining the breadth of scope and to introduce interdisciplinary paths of exploration as a way forward for future discourse. Topics addressed include the idea of 'silent music' in the work of English philosopher Peter Sterry and Spanish Jesuit St John of the Cross; the apparently paradoxical contemplation of silence through the medium of music by Messiaen and the relationship between silence and faith; the aesthetics of Susan Sontag applied to Cage's idea of silence; silence as a different means of understanding musical texture; ways of thinking about silences in music produced during therapy sessions as a form of communication; music and silence in film, including the idea that music can function as silence; and the function of silence in early chant. Perhaps the most all-pervasive theme of the book is that of silence and nothingness, music and spirituality: a theme that has appeared in writings on John Cage but not, in a broader sense, in scholarly writing. The book reveals that unexpected concepts and ways of thinking emerge from looking at sound in relation to its antithesis, encompassing not just Western art traditions, but the relationship between music, silence, the human psyche and sociological trends - ultimately, providing deeper understanding of the elemental places both music and silence hold within world philosophies and fundamental states of being. Silence, Music, Silent Music will appeal to those working in the fields of musicology, psychology of religion, gender studies, aesthetics and philosophy.
