Book excerpt: Sediment Provenance: Influences on Compositional Change from Source to Sink provides a thorough and inclusive overview that features data-based case studies on a broad range of dynamic aspects in sedimentary rock structure and deposition. Provenance data plays a critical role in a number of aspects of sedimentary rocks, including the assessment of palaeogeographic reconstructions, the constraints of lateral displacements in orogens, the characterization of crust which is no longer exposed, the mapping of depositional systems, sub-surface correlation, and in predicting reservoir quality. The provenance of fine-grained sediments—on a global scale—has been used to monitor crustal evolution, and sediment transport is paramount in considering restoration techniques for both watershed and river restoration. Transport is responsible for erosion, bank undercutting, sandbar formation, aggradation, gullying, and plugging, as well as bed form migration and generation of primary sedimentary structures. Additionally, the quest for reservoir quality in contemporary hydrocarbon exploration and extraction necessitates a deliberate focus on diagenesis. This book addresses all of these challenges and arms geoscientists with an all-in-one reference to sedimentary rocks, from source to deposition. Provides the latest data available on various aspects of sedimentary rocks from their source to deposition Features case studies throughout that illustrate new data and critical analyses of published data by some of the world’s most pre-eminent sedimentologists Includes more than 150 illustrations, photos, figures, and diagrams that underscore key concepts

This book was released on 1980 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Deposition of the Eocene Green River Formation in Sevier and San¬pete Counties, central Utah, occurred in a hydrographic basin situated between the Sevier Thrust Belt and the San Rafael Uplift. Outcrops of the Green River Formation along the Wasatch Plateau in Sevier and San¬pete Counties are situated on the eastern side of the lake basin as indicated by facies patterns and northwestward dispersal of fluvial sandstones. Sandstones were derived from crystalline and volcanic rocks of the Uncompahgre and Henry Mountain Uplifts. Eight lithofacies identified in the Green River Formation repre¬sent lacustrine, marginal lacustrine, mud flat, and alluvial environ¬ments. They are: 1) flat pebble conglomerate, 2) lime sand, 3) strom¬atolite, 4) micrite-dolomicrite, 5) green mudstone, 6) brown mudstone, 7) oil shale, and 8) siliciclastic sandstone. Stratification sequences of lithofacies are transgressive-regressive sequences representing large expansions and retractions in lake size. The sequences are formed in response to climate.

Book excerpt: The transition from the Eocene to the Oligocene epochs was the most significant event in earth history since the extinction of dinosaurs. As the first Antarctic ice sheets appeared, major extinctions and faunal turnovers took place on the land and in the sea, eliminating forms adapted to a tropical world and replacing them with the ancestors of most of our modern animal and plant life. Through a detailed study of climatic conditions and of organisms buried in Eocene-Oligocene sediments, this volume shows that the separation of Antarctica from Australia was a critical factor in changing oceanic circulation and ultimately world climate. In this book forty-eight leading scientists examine the full range of Eocene and Oligocene phenomena. Their articles cover nearly every major group of organisms in the ocean and on land and include evidence from paleontology, stable isotopes, sedimentology, seismology, and computer climatic modeling. The volume concludes with an update of the geochronologic framework of the late Paleogene. Originally published in 1992. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 52 papers in this vary in content from summaries or state-of-knowledge treatments, to detailed contributions that describe new species. Although the distinction is subtle, the title (Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah) indicates the science of paleontology in the state of Utah, rather than the even more ambitious intent if it were given the title “Vertebrate Paleontology of Utah” which would promise an encyclopedic treatment of the subject. The science of vertebrate paleontology in Utah is robust and intense. It has grown prodigiously in the past decade, and promises to continue to grow indefinitely. This research benefits everyone in the state, through Utah’s muse ums and educational institutions, which are the direct beneficiaries.
