Release of reservoir sediment is the main uncertainty associated with this issue. This study has extensively documented the short-term changes in channel geometry, bed level profile, size distribution of substrates, and their relations with the sediment transport at the reach scale after a low-head dam removal. Before the complete removal, the structure was breached to de-water the reservoir. The suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and discharge downstream of the dam showed nearly no change during the breach. In contrast, the complete removal of the structure produced a sudden increase in downstream discharge and SSC. However, the amount of increase was insignificant compared to the annual rainfall event. The SSC within 10 months after the removal showed no significant difference with that of SSC before the removal. No bank erosion was evident at both upstream and downstream of the dam; while net deposition occurred downstream and net erosion occurred in the reservoir. Deposition and scouring were evident in the reservoir with overall decrease by 30% in bed slope. Deposition measurements showed up to a 20 cm increase in bed level downstream of the dam. Downstream bed materials size became at least 40% finer for post-removal conditions than for pre-removal conditions as a result of deposition of finer materials. High resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of the river bathymetry were generated from differential GPS surveys. The volume of deposition and erosion was computed from differencing the DEM for post-removal from the DEM for pre-removal. Compared with the observations, the transport rate estimated from the DEMs overestimated the transport rate within an order of magnitude. A 1-D hydrodynamic model, calibrated with the observations showed promising simulation results on the dynamics of dam removal and sediment transport. The major features described by the model were: 1) the magnitude and timing of the flood wave during the dam removal; and 2) the bed level adjustments after dam removal. Sensitivity analysis showed that the model was strongly dependent on the size distribution of the reservoir substrates.

Book excerpt: Dam removal has recently emerged as a growing trend in river rehabilitation in the United States. The rate of dam removal has been increasing rapidly since 2000, but is doing so with large gaps in our understanding of how the fluvial system will respond to this disturbance. Most of the structures removed to date have been relatively small and, in the vast majority of cases, have not received any pre- or post-removal monitoring. Very few large structures have been removed but, when such removals occur or are proposed, they tend to attract more monitoring activity because of the generally larger volumes of water and sediment involved. It is thus important to understand the form-process-response interactions that occur during the removal of large dams and the extent to which these may be applicable to other removals of varying sizes. The proposed removal of the Glines Canyon Dam from the Elwha River in Washington, USA provides such an opportunity. The 67-m high dam is due to be incrementally removed in 2011 but its reservoir, Lake Mills, contains 80 years-worth of uncontaminated sediment that has the potential to adversely impact the aquatic and human environment once released into the channel downstream from the dam. In order to better understand the dynamics that control how sediment might be transported into the downstream channel, a series of scaled physical model experiments was performed in which the principle variable investigated was the magnitude of the drop in reservoir water surface elevation. Four main findings emerged from the research. First, the hypothesised relationship between increasing magnitudes of baselevel drop and increasing delta erosion volumes is only weakly developed. Furthermore, the small increases in additional erosion volume for very large increases in magnitude of drop suggest that there may be an upper limit beyond which the volume of sediment eroded does not increase substantially, irrespective of the magnitude of drop. The reasons for this are explored. Second, the volume of delta sediment eroded was greatly affected by the channelÂ's position on the delta surface at the start of each experimental run. The erosion volumes were greatly modulated when the channel was close to the basin boundary (marginal runs), because the boundary inhibited lateral channel movements and the formation of meander bends. When the channel ran through the middle of the delta surface (central runs) the erosion volumes were much larger, because meander bends were able to more fully develop and the channel had a greater overall freedom to adjust laterally over the entire delta surface. In contrast, the marginal runs generally incised slightly more along the full length of the delta than the central runs, despite a more extensively developed armour layer. Related to the channelÂ's starting position, a strong element of topographical steering of the incising channel in the original delta area was observed during the marginal runs. When the channels started close to the left basin boundary (left marginal runs), the left hand curvature of this boundary tended to direct the majority of the flowÂ's erosive power away from the main body of the delta. In contrast, during the right marginal runs, the cross-basin downwards slope from basin right to basin left allowed the incising channel to move downslope and into the main body of the delta, particularly during the post-dam removal flood flows. Third, the armour layer in the central runs generally extended less far downstream through the original delta area than during the marginal runs and this may be because of a frequently observed mobility reversal in sediment transport, which meant that gravels were more effectively flushed out of the original delta area than during the marginal runs. Finally, a phenomenon hitherto unreported in the literature was observed on many occasions over the course of the experimental runs. Bed Elevation Lowering Without Armour Layer Break-up (BELWALB) occurred when the finer sub-armour sediment was eroded, thus undermining the armour layer and allowing the coarser grains to roll forward by a distance equivalent to a few grain diameters. This undermining action was able to migrate a certain distance upstream, either at the onset or end point of more extensive armour layer disturbance, thus causing subtle changes to bed morphology which are important in understanding how the system approached thresholds of stability and how it responded once these thresholds were exceeded.

When a dam is removed, sediment accumulated over a dam?s lifetime may be transported downstream; and the timing, fate and consequences of this sediment remain some of the greatest unknowns associated with dam removal. In this thesis, I develop a conceptual model for erosion and deposition following removal of sediment-filled dams in mountain streams, and use field studies to document actual change. The data show that reservoir erosion in mountain rivers is likely to occur by knickpoint migration, with 85% of stored sediment being released during a single storm event in two field studies, at shear stresses less than that required for mobilization of the median surface particle size. Coarse sediment is predicted to deposit close to the dam with channel aggradation decreasing exponentially with increasing distance downstream, although some channel features are shown to have a greater propensity for aggradation than others. Field studies show that turbidity associated with dam removal and reservoir erosion may decrease hyporheic exchange, but gravel deposition (e.g., 470 m3 of gravel from Dinner Creek Dam) has the potential to more than offset that decrease, and increased hyporheic exchange is shown to reduce diurnal temperature change. Macroinvertebrate density and taxa richness did not respond to dam removal itself, but rather with time-lagged reservoir erosion. Following reservoir erosion, macroinvertebrate density recovered quickly, although longterm taxa community composition appears to be altered. On the Sandy River, field measurements of shear stress and patterns of sediment deposition following cold lahars were used as an analog to predict the fate of fine sediment, which is likely to deposit far from the dam. Results show that the Sandy River has little capacity for fine sediment storage in pools above RK 6.4 (~ 42 kilometers below Marmot Dam) at discharges associated with reservoir sediment releases. Taken as a whole, this paper illustrates a complex suite of process that may accompany removal of sediment-filled dams in mountain rivers.

Documenting the long-term ecological outcomes of large dam removal (i.e. >10 m tall) represents a new frontier in dam removal research: projects are more recent and provide an opportunity to understand the complex ecological changes that occur with these transformative restoration projects. Here, we aim to collate a diverse array of papers on long-term dam removal research projects involving larger dams (>10 m) to synthesize the issues, outcomes, tools, and experimental designs used to study large dam removal projects from physical, biological, and ecological perspectives. With this collection, we aim to showcase diverse global projects on ecosystem responses to large dam removal; collect perspectives from different disciplines, fields, and geographies; and synthesize the current state of knowledge in this area. We expect that this Research Topic will be informative to ongoing, long-term ecological restoration and monitoring projects related to dam removal as well as to upcoming large dam removal projects. Contributions could include original research in a specific discipline or area, case studies, or synthesis papers that address one or more of these topics in a transdisciplinary approach. Contributors could address any of the following major topics as related to outcomes of large dam removal, alone or in combination: Freshwater, estuarine, and marine aquatic biota; River and reservoir geomorphology; Terrestrial and riparian vegetation; Wildlife; Sedimentation; and Modelling. We would like contributors to highlight key results in their area of study, cross-disciplinary insights, and lessons learned that could inform ongoing monitoring and research efforts in current projects as well as upcoming large dam removals.

Book excerpt: In recent years hydraulic structures such as dams have been removed due to deterioration, increased maintenance cost or obsolescence. Investigation of the hydraulic, hydrologic, and sediment transport consequences of the removal of these structures have been very limited, thus necessitating the establishment of analytical techniques and procedures to adequately predict these effects. To properly evaluate the development of techniques and procedures, a model must be selected that closely simulates the actual behavior of the phenomenon being modeled. A mathematical (HEC-6) was selected because of its success in the prediction of sediment transport when applied to a wide variety of cases. The removal of the Washington Water Power Dam on the Clearwater River near Lewiston, Idaho, was selected for study. Procedures and techniques of calibration and verification developed, comparison of actual and predicted volume of sediment transported, where the sediment scoured or deposited, and their rates are presented. There is discussion of the applicability of the model to this type of problem, limitations of a one-dimensional model, and interpretation of the results. (Author).

The problem arising however is that these floods, due to their tremendous stream power, carry enormous volumes of sediment which, due to the size of reservoirs, are virtually deposited in toto in the reservoir basin, leading to fast deterioration of a costly investment. Accurate forecasting of reservoir behaviour is therefore of the utmost importance.This book fills a gap in current literature by providing in one volume comprehensive coverage of techniques required to practically investigate the effects sediment deposition in reservoirs has on the viability of water resources projects. Current techniques for practically estimating sediment yield from catchments, estimating the volume of sediment expected to deposit in reservoirs, predicting sediment distribution and calculating scour downstream of reservoirs are evaluated and presented. The liberal use of diagrams and graphs to explain the various techniques enhances understanding and makes practical application simple.
