Book excerpt: Chapter 4 of Duda, J.J., J.A. Warrick, and C.S. Magirl, eds., Coastal habitats of the Elwha River, Washington – Biological and physical patterns and processes prior to dam removal This report includes chapters that summarize the results of multidisciplinary studies to quantify and characterize the current (2011) status and baseline conditions of the lower Elwha River, its estuary, and the adjacent nearshore ecosystems prior to the historic removal of two long-standing dams that have strongly influenced river, estuary, and nearshore conditions. The studies were conducted as part of the U.S. Geological Survey Multi-disciplinary Coastal Habitats in Puget Sound (MD-CHIPS) project. Chapter 4 details a series of hydrological data collected by the MD-CHIPS Elwha project. These include groundwater monitoring, surface water-groundwater interactions in the estuary, an estimated surface-water budget to the estuary, and a series of temperature and salinity measurements.

Book excerpt: Chapter 2 of Duda, J.J., J.A. In chapter 2, the volume and timing of sediment delivery to the estuary and nearshore are discussed, providing an overview of the sediment stored in the two reservoirs and the expected erosion mechanics of the reservoir sediment deposits after removal of the dams.

Book excerpt: The estuarine fauna and their habitats in Padilla Bay, Washington, have been the subject of a variety of studies during the last 20 years, although there has been no review or synthesis of these studies. Concern for the habitats along the coasts of the United States has increased in recent years. To address this concern, several classification schemes have been proposed for coastal habitats (Ray 1975; Cowardin et al. 1979; Dethier 1990; Simenstad et al. 1991). Recently, Ray (1994) has proposed a Coastal Habitat Classification Scheme to provide an overall framework for evaluating coastal habitats. An early step in this process of evaluating coastal habitats is the collection and summary of existing information. The objective of this report is to collect the available data on habitats in Padilla Bay, Washington, and to review the information relevant to the habitats identified in the Coastal Habitat Classification Scheme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mass Transport, Gravity Flows, and Bottom Currents: Downslope and Alongslope Processes and Deposits focuses solely on important downslope and alongslope processes. The book provides clear definitions and characteristics based on soil mechanics, fluid mechanics and sediment concentration by volume. It addresses Slides, Slumps, and Debris Flows, Grain Flows, Liquefied/Fluidized Flows, and Turbidity Currents, Density plumes, Hyperpycnal Flows, the Triggering Mechanisms of Downslope Processes, Bottom Currents, and Soft-Sediment Deformation Structures. The mechanics of each process are described in detail and used to provide empirically-driven categories to help recognize these deposits it the rock record. Case studies clearly illustrate of the problems inherent in recognizing these processes in the rock record, and potential solutions are provided alongside future avenues of research. An appendix also provides step-by-step guidance in describing and interpreting sediments. Comprehensively addresses modern downslope and alongslope processes, including definitions and mechanisms Provides key criteria for the recognition of depositional facies in the rock record Includes case studies to illustrate each downslope and alongslope process Identifies key problems and potential solutions for future research Uses pragmatic, empirical, data-driven interpretations to revise conventional facies models

Book excerpt: River Science is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary field at the interface of the natural sciences, engineering and socio-political sciences. It recognises that the sustainable management of contemporary rivers will increasingly require new ways of characterising them to enable engagement with the diverse range of stakeholders. This volume represents the outcome of research by many of the authors and their colleagues over the last 40 years and demonstrates the integral role that River Science now plays in underpinning our understanding of the functioning of natural ecosystems, and how societal demands and historic changes have affected these systems. The book will inform academics, policy makers and society in general of the benefits of healthy functioning riverine systems, and will increase awareness of the wide range of ecosystem goods and services they provide.
